The effect of strain aging on tensile behavior and properties of API X60, X70, and X80 pipeline steels was investigated in this study. The API X60, X70, and X80 pipeline steels were fabricated by varying alloying elements and thermomechanical processing conditions. Although all the steels exhibited complex microstructure consisting of polygonal ferrite (PF), acicular ferrite, granular bainite (GB), bainitic ferrite (BF), and secondary phases, they had different fractions of microstructures depending on the alloying elements and thermomechanical processing conditions. The tensile test results revealed that yielding behavior steadily changed from continuous-type to discontinuous-type as aging temperature increases after 1% pre-strain. After pre-strain and thermal aging treatment in all the steels, the yield and tensile strengths, and yield ratio were increased, while the uniform elongation and work hardening exponent were decreased. In the case of the X80 steel, particularly, the decrease in uniform elongation was relatively small due to many mobile dislocations in PF, and the increase in yield ratio was the lowest because a large amount of harder microstructures such as GB, BF, and coarse secondary phases effectively enhanced work hardening.

This study presents methods to estimate elastic-plastic crack opening displacement (COD) fur circumferential through-wall cracked pipes for the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) analysis of pressurized piping. Proposed methods are based not only on the GE/EPRI approach but also on the reference stress approach. For each approach, two different estimation schemes are given, one for the case when full stress-strain data are available and the other fur the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. For the GE/EPRI approach a robust way of determining the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) parameters is proposed, not only fur the case when detailed information on full stress-strain data is available but also for the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. The COD estimates according to the GE/EPRI approach, using the R-O parameters determined from the proposed R-O fitting procedures, generally compare well with the published pipe test data. For the reference stress approach, the COD estimates according to the method based on both full stress-strain data and limited tensile properties are in good agreement with pipe test data. In conclusion, experimental validation given in the present study provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to practical LBB analyses even though when information on material's tensile properties is limited.

The Fe-22wt.%Cr-6wt.%Al foams were fabricated via the powder alloying process in this study. The structural characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Fe-Cr-Al foams with different average pore sizes were investigated. Result of the structural analysis shows that the average pore sizes were measured as 474 ㎛ (450 foam) and 1220 ㎛ (1200 foam). Regardless of the pore size, Fe-Cr-Al foams had a Weaire-Phelan bubble structure, and α-ferrite was the major constituent phase. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted with an initial strain rate of 10-3/s. Tensile yield strengths were 3.4 MPa (450 foam) and 1.4 MPa (1200 foam). Note that the total elongation of 1200 foam was higher than that of 450 foam. Furthermore, their compressive yield strengths were 2.5 MPa (450 foam) and 1.1 MPa (1200 foam), respectively. Different compressive deformation behaviors according to the pore sizes of the Fe-Cr-Al foams were characterized: strain hardening for the 450 foam and constant flow stress after a slight stress drop for the 1200 foam. The effect of structural characteristics on the mechanical properties was also discussed.

The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of normalized and quenched 3.60wt%C-2.60wt%C ductile cast iron poured into shell stack mold were investigated. The strength and hardness of as-cast specimen were increased and the elongation of it was decreased with the additions of Mn, Cu and Sn. The strength and hardness were increased with the addition of 0.40wt%Mo and then rather decreased with the increased addition of 0.80wt%. The strength and hardness were increased with normalizing treatment and the strengths of normalized specimens were increased slightly with the addition of alloying elements except Mo. Meanwhile the yield strength of the normalized specimen was increased slightly with the addition of Mo, the tensile strength was not changed much. Meanwhile the hardness and strength of the quenched specimen were slightly increased with the addition of Mn, those were almost not changed with the amount added. The tensile strength of the quenched specimen with larger diameter, when the Cu had been added, and the tensile and yield strengths of them, when Mo had been added, were increased with the addition of alloying element. On the other hand, those were not changed with the amount added. For the case of specimen with smaller diameter, there were no effects of these two elements. When Sn had been added, the strength of hardened specimen with larger diameter was slightly increased with the amount added. However, that with smaller diameter was rather decreased with it. The effect of specimen diameter on the strength of quenched specimen with the addition of Cu, Mo and Sn was reduced.
Improvement of the mechanical properties of a commercial aluminium casting alloy, A356, was achieved through an optimised combination of alloying elements, modification, and heat treatment. 0.7 wt.% Cu and an additional 0.2 wt.% Mg were added to an Al-7Si-0.35Mg alloy for strengthening at both room and elevated temperatures, whilst a subsequent decrease in the ductility was compensated for by the modification of eutectic Si by Sr addition at a level of up to 110 ppm. It was found that the dissolution of Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases could be maximised by solid-solutionising an alloy with 40 ppm Sr at $530^{\circ}C$, increasing the tensile and yield strengths to 350 MPa and 297 MPa, respectively, with a reasonably high strain of 5% after peak-aging at $210^{\circ}C$. Further addition of Sr up to 110 ppm is, however, more likely to interfere with the dissolution of the Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases during solid solution treatment, resulting in a slight decrease in both tensile and yield strengths at room temperature. Besides the Cu addition, such undissolved phases, on the other hand, may contribute to elevated temperature strength at $200^{\circ}C$.

The study proposes the method to cancel the scallop to avoid fracture of the circumstance of the scallop at H shape column-to-beam connection and reinforce at beam flange two faces with the cover plates and rib. A total of four specimens were tested to enhance seismic performance of building structure by reducing the frequency of stress concentration and preventing the brittle fracture of scallop. For this purpose, four full-scale test specimens were made and loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. The main analytical parameters are panel-zone-strength ratio, yield strengths, initial stiffness, total plastic rotation, contribution of each element to total plastic rotation and energy dissipation capability. For the specimens tested under repeated loading, the experimental result was satisfied with seismic performance requirement as the Special Moment Frames (SMF). The analysis results show that all of the test specimens were found to have good performance to 4% story drift and satisfied the criteria for the plastic roation capacity of SMFs that is 0.03 rad. according to the 1997 AISC seismic provision.
The influence of various surface morphologies on the mechanical strength of silicon substrates was investigated in this study. The yield for the solar cell industry is mainly related to the fracturing of silicon wafers during the manufacturing process. The flexural strengths of silicon substrates were influenced by the density of the pyramids as well as by the size and the rounded surface of the pyramids. To characterize and optimize the relevant texturing process in terms of mechanical stability and the fabrication yield, the mechanical properties of textured silicon substrates were investigated to optimize the size and morphology of random pyramids. Several types of silicon substrates were studied, including the planar type, a textured surface with large and small pyramids, and a textured surface with rounded pyramids. The surface morphology and a cross-section of the as-textured and fractured silicon substrates were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

In cold-formed steel (CFS) structures, such as trusses, transmission towers and portal frames, the use of back-to-back built-up CFS unequal angle sections are becoming increasingly popular. In such an arrangement, intermediate welds or screw fasteners are required at discrete points along the length, preventing the angle sections from buckling independently. Limited research is available in the literature on axial strength of back-to-back built-up CFS unequal angle sections. The issue is addressed herein. This paper presents an experimental investigation on both the welded and screw fastened back-to-back built-up CFS unequal angle sections under axial compression. The load-axial shortening and the load verses lateral displacement behaviour along with the deformed shapes at failure are reported. A nonlinear finite element (FE) model was then developed, which includes material non-linearity, geometric imperfections and modelling of intermediate fasteners. The FE model was validated against the experimental test results, which showed good agreement, both in terms of failure loads and deformed shapes at failure. The validated FE model was then used for the purpose of a parametric study to investigate the effect of different thicknesses, lengths and, yield stresses of steel on axial strength of back-to-back built-up CFS unequal angle sections. Five different thicknesses and seven different lengths (stub to slender columns) with two different yield stresses were investigated in the parametric study. Axial strengths obtained from the experimental tests and FE analyses were used to assess the performance of the current design guidelines as per the Direct Strength Method (DSM); obtained comparisons show that the current DSM is conservative by only 7% on average, while predicting the axial strengths of back-to-back built-up CFS unequal angle sections.

The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beam specimens strengthened using a newly proposed Side Near Surface Mounted (S-NSM) technology was investigated experimentally in this work. In addition, analytical and nonlinear finite element (FE) modeling was exploited to forecast the performance of RC members reinforced with S-NSM utilizing steel bars. Five (one control and four strengthened) RC beams were evaluated for flexural performance under static loading conditions employing four-point bending loads. Experimental variables comprise different S-NSM reinforcement ratios. The constitutive models were applied for simulating the non-linear material characteristics of used concrete, major, and strengthening reinforcements. The failure load and mode, yield and ultimate strengths, deflection, strain, cracking behavior as well as ductility of the beams were evaluated and discussed. To cope with the flexural behavior of the tested beams, a 3D non-linear FE model was simulated. In parametric investigations, the influence of S-NSM reinforcement, the efficacy of the S-NSM procedure, and the structural response ductility are examined. The experimental, numerical, and analytical outcomes show good agreement. The results revealed a significant increase in yield and ultimate strengths as well as improved failure modes.

An experimental study has been carried out to examine development length effects for high strength headed deformed bars. Current design codes limit the specified yield strength of headed bars to 400 MPa. Such the limit is due to the lack of experimental studies on headed bars made of high strength materials. Thus a test program was planed with headed bars with the yield strength of 600 MPa. The threaded head type with head shapes of round plate and circular cone was selected in this study. The experimental variables were development length, number of bars, and head shape. Specimens were classified into L-type and S-type depending on the development length. The development length of L-type was computed according to the design code without considering the limit. S-type specimens had shorter development lengths than the L-type. Further classification was made depending on the shape of heads. A-types have the head shape of round plate and B-types have the shape of circular cone. Three L-type specimens were fabricated with the variable of number of bars (1, 2, and 3). Four specimens for each of SA and SB types were made with development lengths of 50%, 45%, 40%, and 35% compared with L-type. Pullout tests was carried out with 11 specimens. The test results were compared with computed strengths with the design code equations (Appendix II). Based the current studies, it can be said that high strength headed deformed bars used in this study be able to provide such strengths computed with the current design code without considering the yield strength limit.
