  • According as we look around a notion of LM-YANG(陰陽) in NAE-KYUNG(內徑) or ancient for example the Book of Changes(周易), we will find that the principle of UM-YANG of philosophy in ancient china was applied medical science by NAE-KYUNG, and Chung-Kyung(仲景) connected principle of UM-YANG in NAE-KYUNG to demonstration and medical treatment(辨證施治) of SANG-HAN disease(傷寒病). According as we look around 3UM-3YANG(三陰三陽) in NAE-KYUNG and various theories of another scholar connected 3UM-3YANG of SANG-HAN-RON(傷寒論), we can know that the whole of SANG-HAN-YUK-KYUNG(傷寒六經) cannot explain by a some conception, we cannot understand precisely rear meaning of SANG-HAN-YUK-KYUNG until theories-JANG-BU(臟腑), GYUNG-RAK(經絡), GI-HWA(氣化), a reigon, a layer, and so on-are studied totally. Therefore 3UM-3YANG of SANG-HAN-RON(傷寒論) is basically the thing of specialization UM-YANG, eventually UM-YANG are two functional characteristics in human body. It is specialized to 3UM-3YANG by spatial and time criteria. When we consider a question in its aspect, YUK-KYUNG is synthetic six classifications of human body's functional system that include(3UM-3YANG)GYUNG-RAK, related JANG-BU, distributional area of GYUNG-RAK, vicissitude of UM-YANG, more or less of GEE-HYUL(氣血), function of GAE-HAB-CHUL(開闔樞), and the like; and disease of YUK-KYUNG of SANG-HAN-RON are the very six types of disease that appeared by dint of mal function of each synthetic functional system.

  • Objectives: The Yin-Yang temperament and the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) were reported to have relations with psychopathological problems in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine how domains of Yin-Yang temperament influence on problem behaviors in Korean middle school students. Methods: Subjects of 681 Korean middle school students completed the SPQ for measuring Yin-Yang temperament and the Youth Self-Report (YSR) for measuring problem behaviors. The differences of problem behaviors between Yin and Yang temperament groups were tested with T-test and profile analysis. The associations of the SPQ subscales on problem behaviors was also examined with Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. Results: Yang temperament was related to the externalizing problem while Yin temperament to the internalizing problem. The Emotionality and Behavior dimension of Yin-Yang temperament were found to be a factor of susceptibility and resilience for problem behaviors, respectively. Three dimensions of Yin-Yang temperament have different influences on externalizing and internalizing problems depending on the sex and Yin-Yang temperament groups of subjects. Conclusions: The Yin-Yang temperament would be useful for predicting and preventing the problem behaviors of middle school students. This study would be useful for screening the psychopathological problems and helping Korean adolescents to develop healthy character.

  • Objectives : This paper aims to investigate the role of the sweet flavor within the contexts of 'pungent and sweet becoming Yang' and 'sour and sweet becoming Yin' and the meaning of the two concepts. Methods : Related contents in databases including the Siqu Quanshu were searched with 'pungent and sweet becoming Yang' and 'sour and sweet becoming Yin', whose understanding and application were examined. Results & Conclusions : The theories of 'pungent and sweet becoming Yang' and 'sour and sweet becoming Yin' originate from Cheng Wuji's comparison of the Gancaoqianjiangtang and Shaoyaogancaotang in the 29th verse of the Shanghanlun. The two terms first appeared in the Qing period among the Wenbing school. In other medical texts, the combination with sweet flavors could be found with salty, bitter and bland flavors other than with pungent and sour. The role of the sweet flavor in 'pungent and sweet becoming Yang' and 'sour and sweet becoming Yin' is to accomplish the dispersing and converging action slowly and effectively, by supplying energy in small amounts preventing it from happening too quickly, corresponding to its Earth nature of the Five Elements which harmonizes the Yin and Yang. While 'becoming Yin' and 'becoming Yang' could be understood as tonifying Yin and Yang, it could also be understood as 'doing Yin' and 'doing Yang', The specific actions differ according to herb and mixture. The point of distinction between the aforementioned tonification and that of medicinals that have Yin and Yang tonifying properties is that due to the other flavor that is matched with the sweet flavor, Qi is given motility which allows for tonification without stagnation.

  • The 'Half outside and half inside(半表半裏)' is the part which is located between outside and inside, and it is regarded as the nickname of ShaoYang(少陽) in Sanhanlun(傷寒論). About the meaning of 'Half outside and half inside', many medical scientists agreed that the 'outside' is 'TaiYang(太陽)', but they didn't agreed the meaning of 'inside'. One group insisted the 'inside' is 'YangMing (陽明)', the other group instisted that 'TaiYin(太陰)'. To know which opinion is correct, I analyed the Kwigyung(歸經) of herbs in Soshihotang(小柴胡湯) which has a close relationship with ShaoYang, and it is proved that the Kwigyung of herbs is the Foot ShaoYang-GALL BLADDER Meridian(足少陽膽經), Hand TaiYin-LUNG Meridian(手太陰肺經), and Foot TaiYin-SPLEEN Meridian(足太陰脾經). So I concluded that the 'inside' is not 'YangMing' but 'TaiYin'.

  • "Eumyang-ihamnon(陰陽離合論)", from aspects of the Samjae theory[三才論], presents the unique insight for understanding dynamics of three Eum and three Yang[三陰三陽] throughout human body in fundamental level, defining purpose and essence of three Eum and three Yang motion. Furthermore, it indicates Bunbu(分部) of three Eum and three Yang, utilizing principles of Yukhap(六合), which serves as logical basis of three Eum and three Yang Byeonjeung(辨證). With theoretical meaning and practical values of "Eumyang-ihamnon(陰陽離合論)", this study investigates significance of three Eum and three Yang-Ihap-Motion in terms of the Samjae theory[三才論] and clinical uses of the three Eum and three Yang Bunbu theory[三陰三陽分部論].

  • Gageum annotated the text of Sanghannon - Rigor with fever comes from yang and rigor without fever comes from yin. - that 'comes from yang' was the state already shown the fever and 'comes from yin' was the state not yet shown the fever, so he told that yang disease without fever belonged in 'comes from yin' and yin disease with fever belonged in 'comes from yang'. And he annotated the text - If one purges the disease comes from yang, the fever goes into the inside and it becomes Gyeolhyung. And if one purges the disease comes from yin, it becomes Bijjeung. - that yin meant the inside and yang meant the outside. That is to say, he distinguished two texts independently. And he presented the pathological reason that cold medicines such as sorts of Sasim-tang were used to cure Bijjeung.
