단일 비산란 그리드 및 다색광 x-선원 기반 위상대조 x-선 영상화 실험 연구 (Experimental Study for Phase-contrast X-ray Imaging Based on a Single Antiscatter Grid and a Polychromatic X-ray Source)

  • 본 연구에서는 단일 비산란 그리드 및 다색광 x-선원을 이용하여 위상대조 x-선 영상을 용이하게 구현할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 신기법의 개념 입증을 위해 집속형 선형 그리드(200 lines/inch 선 밀도), 마이크로 초점 x-선관(${\sim}5{\mu}m$ 초점크기), CMOS형 평판형 검출기($48{\mu}m$ 픽셀 크기)로 실험장치를 구성하였으며, 한 번의 x-선 촬영($90kV_p$, 0.1 mAs)으로 감약대조 x-선 영상과 향상된 가시성을 지진 산란 x-선 영상 및 차분 위상대조 x-선 영상을 Fourier변조복원 기법을 적용하여 성공적으로 분리 획득하였다. 더 나아가, 감약대조 x-선 영상과 산란 x-선 영상을 합성함으로써 일반 감약대조 x-선 영상에서는 명확하게 볼 수 없는 샘플의 미세 구조를 보다 선명하게 나타냄을 확인하였다. 본 논문에서 제안한 단일 비산란 그리드 기반 위상대조 x-선 영상화 기법은 실험 구성 및 절차가 단순하고 새로운 대조도에 기반한 산란 및 위상대조 x-선 영상을 동시에 제공하기 때문에 차세대 x-선 영상화 신기법으로 다양한 응용분야에서 용이하게 적용될 수 있을 것으로 전망한다.

일반엑스선영상검사의 인자에 따른 산란방사선량 평가 및 분석 (Evaluation and Analysis of Scattered Radiation Dose according to Factors in General X-ray Examination)

  • Control of scattered radiation is one of very important factors in the use of medical radiation. In general X-ray exam, the causes, measurement methods, and the kind of detectors of scattered rays within the radiation area are diverse. In this study, the dose of scattered ray was measured by changing the thickness of the polycarbonate phantom and the tube voltage. As a result of measurement of scattered radiation, the results show that the scattered dose significantly(p<.05) increased with growing of thickness of phantom in the tube voltage 40, 50 and 60 kVp(F(p)<.05, R2>64%). As tube voltage increased at all phantom thicknesses, the scattered dose also significantly(p<.05) increased(F(p)<.05, R2>69%). In cases where a significant correlation was shown, the coefficient of determination of more than 60% was shown in regression analysis. The results of this study can be used as data on scattered radiation dose according to the tube voltage and the object thickness in general X-ray imaging exam.

산란 방사선이 치과용 방사선 필름에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A STUDY ON THE SCATTER RADIATION AFFECTING THE DENTAL X-RAY FILM)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of scatter radiation to dental x-ray film with long time-exposure in the different structures of the tooth, by using pinhole camera. For this study, pinhole camera, skull with tooth, and pocket dosimeter were used. The radiation with 70 and 90kVp and exposure time (minimum: 2.5 min., maximum 10 hrs.) was projected to the film in the pinhole camera. And density of the obtained x-ray film was measured with densitometer. In the intra-oral film taking, the amount of exposure of the scatter radiation affecting the thyroid gland area was measured with the dosimeter at the thyroid gland. The density of radiographs was compared in radiation projected with or without the metal cone of dental machine. The effect of the back scatter radiation to the film was also evaluated when the lead foil was removed. The obtained results were as follows: 1. A pinhole camera was a valuable device for locating the source of x-ray. 2. The scatter radiation affected the dental x-ray film when the radiation source was exposed. more than 5 hours'. In that case, the density of the scatter radiation could be observed visually. 3. The scatter radiation caused by short exposure of dental radiation didn't affect the diagnostic quality of the dental x-ray film. 4. The differences of densities between the tooth and the soft tissue according to exposure time showed 0.16 in 5 hours' exposure & 0.17 in 10 hours' exposure at 70 kVp & 0.12 in 5 hours' exposure & 0.13 in 10 hours' exposure at the 90kVp. 5. The differences of densities between the tooth and the soft tissue according to kVp showed no difference between 5 hours' exposure of tooth at 70 kVp and soft tissue at 90 kVp, but showed 0.05 high density in tooth when 10 hours' exposure at 90 kVp. 6. No difference of density was on radiographs taken with or without dental machine cone. 7. Back scatter radiation was recorded image of radiographs for only 3 min. 8. The amounts of the scatter radiation exposed to the thyroid gland in intraoral film taking were 1.12 mr in upper anterior, 0.55 mr in upper posterior, 2.75 mr in lower anterior, and 1.92 mr in lower posterior teeth.

Performance Analysis of Low-level Radiation Shielding Sheet with Diamagnetic Nanoparticles

  • In this study, the authors attempted to produce a medical radiation shielding fiber that can be produced at a nanosize scale and that is, unlike lead, harmless to the human body. The performance of the proposed medical radiation shielding fiber was then evaluated. First, diamagnetic bismuth oxide, an element which, among elements that have a high atomic number and density, is harmless to the human body, was selected as the shielding material. Next, 10-100 nm sized nanoparticles in powder form were prepared by ball milling the bismuth oxide ($Bi_2O_3$), the average particle size of which is $1-500{\mu}m$, for approximately 10 minutes. The manufactured bismuth oxide was formed into a colloidal solution, and the radiation shielding fabric was fabricated by curing after coating the solution on one side or both sides of the fabric. The thicknesses of the shielding sheets prepared with bismuth oxide were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 mm. An experimental method was used to measure the absorbed dose and irradiation dose by using the lead equivalent test method of X-ray protection goods presented by Korean Industrial Standards; the resultant shielding rate was then calculated. From the results of this study, the X-ray shielding effect of the shielding sheet with 0.1 mm thickness was about 55.37% against 50 keV X-ray, and the X-ray shielding effect in the case of 1.0 mm thickness showed shielding characteristics of about 99.36% against 50 keV X-ray. In conclusion, it is considered that nanosized-bismuth radiation shielding fiber developed in this research will contribute to reducing the effects of primary X-ray and secondary X-ray such as when using a scattering beam at a low level exposure.

Radiation Safety Exploration Using Radio-photoluminescence Dosimeter for Crookes Tubes in Junior and Senior High School in Japan

  • Background: Crookes tube is utilized in junior high and high schools in Japan to study the character of electrons and current, and not for radiological education. There is no official guideline or regulation for these radiation source to the public. Therefore, most teachers have no information about the leakage of X-rays from Crookes tube. The peak energy of X-rays is approximately 20 keV, and it is impossible to measure using conventional survey meters. Materials and Methods: Each leakage dose of low energy X-rays from 38 Crookes tube in the education field, such as junior and senior high schools in Japan, was explored by the teachers in the school using radio-photoluminescence (RPL) dosimeters. Before and after the measurements, the dosimeters were sent by postal mails. Results and Discussion: At the exploration in this study, it was estimated that the 70 ㎛ dose equivalent, Hp(0.07) of X-rays from 31 Crookes tubes were smaller than 100 µSv in 10 minutes, at the distance of 1 m, where the Crookes tube was usually observed. However, the highest dose was estimated as 0.69 mSv by an equipment with the full power. Furthermore, one Crookes tube exhibited 0.62 mSv with minimum output power of the induction coil. This relatively large dose was reduced by the shorter distance of discharge electrodes of the induction coil. Conclusion: The leakage dose of low energy X-rays from 38 Crookes tube was explored using RPL dosimeters. It was estimated that the Hp(0.07) of X-rays from 31 Crookes tubes were smaller than 100 µSv in 10 minutes at the distance of 1 m, while some equipment radiated a higher dose. With this study, the provisional guideline for the safety operation of Crookes tube is established.

Comparison of Quality of Bologna Sausage Manufactured by Electron Beam or X-Ray Irradiated Ground Pork

  • Ground lean pork was irradiated by an electron beam or X-rays to compare the effects of two types of radiation generated by a linear accelerator on the quality of Bologna sausage as a model meat product. Raw ground lean pork was vacuum packaged at a thickness of 1.5 cm and irradiated at doses of 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 kGy by an electron beam (2.5 MeV) or X-rays (5 MeV). Solubility of myofibrillar proteins, bacterial counts, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values were determined for raw meat samples. Bologna sausage was manufactured using the irradiated lean pork, and total bacterial counts, TBARS values, and quality properties (color differences, cooking yield, texture, and palatability) were determined. Irradiation increased the solubility of myofibrillar proteins in a dose-dependent manner (p<0.05). Bacterial contamination of the raw meat was reduced as the absorbed dose increased, and the reduction was the same for both radiation types. Differences were observed only between irradiated and non-irradiated samples (p<0.05). X-ray irradiation may serve as an alternative to gamma irradiation and electron beam irradiation.

Radiation attenuation and elemental composition of locally available ceramic tiles as potential radiation shielding materials for diagnostic X-ray rooms

  • Ceramic materials are being explored as alternatives to toxic lead sheets for radiation shielding due to their favorable properties like durability, thermal stability, and aesthetic appeal. However, crafting effective ceramics for radiation shielding entails complex processes, raising production costs. To investigate local viability, this study evaluated Malaysian ceramic tiles for shielding in diagnostic X-ray rooms. Different ceramics in terms of density and thickness were selected from local manufacturers. Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) characterized ceramic compositions, while Monte Carlo Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (MC PHITS) simulations determined Linear Attenuation Coefficient (LAC), Half-value Layer (HVL), Mass Attenuation Coefficient (MAC), and Mean Free Path (MFP) within the 40-150 kV energy range. Comparative analysis between MC PHITS simulations and real setups was conducted. The C3-S9 ceramic sample, known for homogeneous full-color structure, showcased superior shielding attributes, attributed to its high density and iron content. Notably, energy levels considerably impacted radiation penetration. Overall, C3-S9 demonstrated strong shielding performance, underlining Malaysia's potential ceramic tile resources for X-ray room radiation shielding.

치과 X선발생장치 및 방어에 관한 조사연구 (A LIMITED SURVEY OF DENTAL X-RAY UNITS AND PROTECTION IN KOREA)

  • In dental roentgenograph it is of mutual benefit to the patient and the dentist to use the minimum amount of radiation capable of producing roentgenograms with maximum interprtive informations. Recent increases in the number of diagnostic x-ray examinations made in this country have caused attention to be paid to the quantity of radiation delivered to the population and operator. The purposes of this study was to assess the quality of dental x-ray units, the amount of films, the average processing procedures and the radiation protection methods in korea. The results were as following: 1. Most of radiation generating system were used in low voltage such as 60Kvp, 10㎃. 2. High sensitivity films such as 'D' group of Kodak or Rinn were mainly used and average 14.7 films used per weeks. 3. Some dentists practiced visual processing technic in simple dark room, and others used instant films. 4. 68.26% of patient held the film themselves, but 27.30% were assisted by dentists film holding. 5. In radiation protection method, 7.85% of dentists had protection equipments such as protective barrier, 2.73% wore protective apron, 27.9% made it a rules to avoid beam, and 7.51% used to maintain a distance from the radiation source.

휴대용 검출기의 방사선 고감도 검출을 위한 SiPM 특성 분석 (Characteristics Analysis of SiPM for Detection of High Sensitivity of Portable Detectors)

  • 본 논문에서는 휴대용 X-ray 검출기의 방사선 고감도 검출에 대한 실현 가능 여부를 확인하기 위한 SiPM의 특성 분석을 목적으로 한다. 휴대용 X-ray 검출기는 환자의 위치에 빠르게 접근하여 실시간 이미지를 획득함으로써 의사들은 신속하게 진단을 수행할 수 있는 장점이 있지만 이러한 이동성은 선량 감지의 어려움을 동반한다. 기존 검출기에서는 SiPM을 X-ray Trigger를 판별하는 단순한 용도로 사용하고 있다. SiPM을 통한 X-ray의 고감도 검출 가능 여부를 확인하기 위해 7종의 SiPM Sensor를 비교 선정하고 특성 분석을 진행하였다. 최종 시험에 사용한 SiPM은 10 nGy 수준의 극저선량 조사 조건에서 Signal 구분이 가능하며, 관전압에 따라 Signal 상승곡선의 기울기가 변하는 것이 확인되었다. X-ray 선량에 따라 SiPM의 signal level 및 지속시간이 변화되는 특성을 이용한 고감도 측정이 가능할 것으로 보인다.

Mevatron KD 선형 가속기에서의 10MV X-선 특성 (Charateristics of 10MV X-ray Beam from a Mevatron KD Linear Accelerator)

  • The beam characteristics and dosimetric measurements of the 10MV X-ray beam from a Mevatron KD linear accelerator are examined. The Percent Depth Dose (POD) table and the Tissue Maximum Ratio (TMR) table are taken from measurement as a function of the field size and the depth. The calculated TMR table from PDD table is compared with those from measurement. Other beam characteristics such as output factor, beam profile (including flatness, symmetry and penumbra), wedge, and the variation of Dmax are presented.
