A Study on Writing Process Components and Writing Strategies in Argumentative Writing (주장하는 글쓰기에서 나타나는 글쓰기 과정 요소 및 글쓰기 전략 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the writing process components and the writing strategies that appeared in the process of argumentative writing through students' think-alouds and semi-structured interviews. The subjects were 18 eighth graders. During argumentative writing, students were asked to decide whether they agreed with the given argument or not on the basis of information provided in the writing task. We categorized the writing process components and the writing strategies by analyzing the protocols of students' think-alouds and interviews, and evaluated the level of their written compositions. The analyses of the results indicated that the writing process components of argumentative writing showed different characteristics from those of problem solving writing in several components such as setting goals, organizing an outline, and evaluating content. In addition, the writing process component 'coordinating information' was newly discovered in argumentative writing. The writing strategies were categorized into four groups by the types of decision making (reflective/intuitive) and the existence of outline organization: Reflective decision making and outline organization, reflective decision making and no outline organization, intuitive decision making and outline organization, and intuitive decision making and no outline organization. Students with the reflective decision making and outline organization strategy were found to get the highest scores in written composition in terms of the relationship between the argument and its grounds, the rebuttal of the opposing argument, and the structure of the writing. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Business process in e-government mostly embody as the flow of documents. Constructing a web-based document flow system becomes an critical task for today s digital government. But few of them use an off-the-shelf workflow product. Why? One of the reasons is that most of the workflow system are heavyweight, monolithic, and package a comprehensive set of features in an all-or-nothing manner. Another reason is that workflow technology lacks the constructs and modeling capability as programming language. It is incumbent on government IT organizations to transform their solution development to component-based computing model. Component technology isolates the computation and communication parts, but how to compose different software components is still a hard nut. An integrated development environment is necessary for CBSD. In this paper we propose a XML and component-based document flow-oriented integrated development environment (DFoIDE) for software developers. By writing some xml configure file, and operate on DFoIDE, developer can construct a workflow application quickly. This method divides system to several components and the activities in process are implemented as business component. Different components are discribed detailedly in this paper, especially one of the core component. Component Integrating Tool. Different perspectives in workflow application are seperated and depicted as different XML files. Correspondly, A component composition method for developing workflow application instead of workflow itself is proposed.

An Exploratory Investigation of the Imaginative Writing Processes of Middle School Students (중학생의 상상하는 글쓰기 과정에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • In this study, we conducted an exploratory investigation of the imaginative writing processes of middle school students. Twelve 8th graders were asked to imagine and write about the daily life of atoms, assuming that they became specific atoms for themselves. The think-aloud method was used to investigate students' writing processes. We recorded students' writing processes, and also collected the data through interviews to clarify ambiguities in their writing processes. The analyses of the results revealed that their imaginative writing processes could be classified into the three types by the two aspects of writing process components (retrieving information and generating ideas). That is, the integration of retrieving information and generating ideas, the predominant retrieving information, and the predominant generating ideas. The students who were classified into the type of the integration of retrieving information and generating ideas came up with a story and properly introduced science concepts into it. These suggested that this type of students expressed their own understanding more effectively, and that this type was most appropriate for imaginative writing in learning science. The results also showed that the imaginative writing processes were greatly influenced by whether the planning step was adequately considered or not. On the bases of the results, we suggest the teaching strategies for effective imaginative writing in learning science.

Identification of Factors Influencing the Operability of Precast Concrete Construction Shipment Request Forms

  • Recently, interest in the precast concrete (PC) construction method has been increasing. The PC construction process consists of i) design, ii) production, iii) transportation, and iv) installation. A PC field manager at the site submits a shipment request form to the factory one to three days before the installation of the PC component. Numerous matters should be considered in writing a shipment request form. Incorrect shipment request forms may cause standby resources, waste of resources, premature work conclusion, or excessive work. These issues can lead to an increase in construction costs, replanning of PC component installation, or rework. In order to prevent such problems, PC component installation should be simulated based on the shipment request form. Accordingly, this study aims to identify factors influencing the operability of shipment request forms for PC construction. To this end, this study derived factors influencing i) initiation of the activity, ii) addition or deletion of activities, and iii) an increase or decrease in the activity execution time. As a result, this study identified flow, the features of PC components, condition of PC components, unloading location, installation location, input equipment and labor, number of anchors, number of supports, weather, strike, and accident. Further studies should verify the factors derived in this study based on focus group interviews.

Statistical Mistakes Commonly Made When Writing Medical Articles (의학 논문 작성 시 발생하는 흔한 통계적 오류)

  • Statistical analysis is an essential component of the medical writing process for research-related articles. Although the importance of statistical testing is emphasized, statistical mistakes continue to appear in journal articles. Major statistical mistakes can occur in any of the three different stages of medical writing, including in the design stage, analysis stage, and interpretation stage. In the design stage, mistakes occur if there is a lack of specificity regarding the research hypothesis or data collection and analysis plans. Discrepancies in the analysis stage occur if the purpose of the study and characteristics of the data are not sufficiently considered, or when an inappropriate analytic procedure is followed. After performing the analysis, the results are interpreted, and an article is written. Statistical analysis mistakes can occur if the underlying methods are incorrectly written or if the results are misinterpreted. In this paper, we describe the statistical mistakes that commonly occur in medical research-related articles and provide advice with the aim to help readers reduce, resolve, and avoid these mistakes in the future.

An Analysis of High School Students' Systems Thinking and Understanding of the Earth Systems through their Science Writing (과학 글쓰기를 통한 고등학생의 지구 시스템에 대한 이해와 시스템 사고의 분석)

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze high school students' understanding about the Earth system and systems thinking process, and to develop science writing programs designed to assess students' understanding about themes of Earth Science such as global warming, volcanoes, and desertification. A total of 8 $11^{th}$ grade students from general high schools participated in the writing program and draw the causal maps. The methods of this study are as follows. First, DAET-C was used to investigate the way of students' understanding about the Earth systems. What the students' best understood was the component of the Earth systems followed by the interaction of the Earth systems and the scientific literacy of Earth science. Second, feedback circulations on the causal maps were found in four students in global warming section, one student in volcanic eruption section, and four students in desertification section, which means that systems thinking was not largely employed by the students. Consequently, the student participants understood that the global change was happening in correlation with complex concepts and factors, but they were short of using systems thinking in their science study. Therefore, the result of this study suggests that more studies be conducted to develop systems thinking in Earth Science learning through science writing programs.

  • This paper proposed and algorithm for distinguishing Korean and English characters which can be applied to multi-size and multi-font images The proposed algorithm distinguishes them as the ratio height to width of each character, the number of connected component, existing or not of stroke image on the left-upper area and detection of bars in an input image. The process of detecting bar is a sequence of left, upper, right, and lower. The proposed method was experimented and proved good performance for the Myungjo font, the Sinmyungjo font, the Gothic font, and the Kungseo font of Hanguel word processor which is widely used for the writing of documents.

Design and Fabrication of a Micro-Heat Pipe with High-Aspect-Ratio Microchannels (고세장비 미세채널 기반의 마이크로 히트파이프 설계 및 제조)

  • The cooling capacity of a micro-heat pipe is mainly governed by the magnitude of capillary pressure induced in the wick structure. For microchannel wicks, a higher capillary pressure is achievable for narrower and deeper channels. In this study, a metallic micro-heat pipe adopting high-aspect-ratio microchannel wicks is fabricated. Micromachining of high-aspect-ratio microchannels is done using the laser-induced wet etching technique in which a focused laser beam irradiates the workpiece placed in a liquid etchant along a desired channel pattern. Because of the direct writing characteristic of the laser-induced wet etching method, no mask is necessary and the fabrication procedure is relatively simple. Deep microchannels of an aspect ratio close to 10 can be readily fabricated with little heat damage of the workpiece. The laser-induced wet etching process for the fabrication of high-aspect-ratio microchannels in 0.5mm thick stainless steel foil is presented in detail. The shape and size variations of microchannels with respect to the process variables, such as laser power, scanning speed, number of scans, and etchant concentration are closely examined. Also, the fabrication of a flat micro-heat pipe based on the high-aspect-ratio microchannels is demonstrated.

The study of narrative of cartoon Focusing on prerequisites for narrative in the Theory of 『Story and Discourse』 by S. Chatman (카툰의 서사 연구 (S.채트먼의 『이야기와 담론』 이론의 서사의 전제조건을 중심으로))

  • Even though cartoons and narration comics were born from different origin, they have been called by names such as 'cartoons' or 'comics'. The reason can be found in the similarity of cartoons and narration comics. The similarity of cartoons and narration comics is the genre consisting of writing and drawing. Writing can be the format of expression and it can represent the story. Such story is present as a component of 'narration'. Sub genre of comics includes cartoons and narration comics. It includes animation in a broad range. In cases of narration comics and animation, it is thought that narration is present with continuity of time. However, in case of cartoon, because one or two cuts without continuity of writing are frequently expressed, it is being asked whether narration is present. It is easy to be reminded of epic or chanson de geste whenever you hear 'narration'. Since it deals with a biography of the character, we think the concept of 'narration' with temporality. However, narration provides a certain event in a broad range. Thus, cartoons presenting one event with the image may have the existence of narration, because description of multiple scenes of narrative comics can be implicitly represented in cartoons. As such implications leave a space, the empty space can be filled by active reasoning of recipients. However, nevertheless, it is very difficult to find studies as well as mentions of narration in cartoons. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the concept and structure of narration and demonstrate the presence of narration in cartoons. First of all, we looked at the narration theory in literature before studying narration in cartoons. The reason is that we thought the approach to the literary theory was required in order to investigate the basic elements, since cartoons are a collection of writing and drawing. We were focused on the prerequisites of narration presented in "story and discourse" of s. Chatman. If the prerequisites of narration are present, we can assume that the narration is present. The prerequisites are 'narration reasoning', 'screening', 'consistency', 'process statements' and 'stasis statement'. As s. Chatman described them as prerequisites of narration, he analyzed the narration structures of films and novels. In addition, we revealed that the narrations were present in cartoons as we identified how prerequisites of narration presented by Chatman were presented and expressed through "vocabulary of comics", "Timeframe" and "life in the line" described in "understanding comics" by Scott McCloud.
