A significant degradation in the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine system can occur by ice accretion on the surface of blades operated in cold climate. The ice accretion can result in performance loss, overloading due to delayed stall, excessive vibration associated with mass imbalance, ice shedding, instrumental measurement errors, and, in worst case, wind turbine system shutdown. In this study, the effects of ice accretions on the aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine blade sections are investigated on the basis of modern CFD method. In addition, the computational results are used to predict the performance of three-dimensional wind turbine blade system through the blade element momentum method. It is shown that the thickness of ice accretion increases from the root to the tip and the effects of icing conditions such as relative wind velocity play significant role in the shape of ice accretion.

Recently, technical advances have been made in high efficiency gas turbine power plants. In domestic gas turbine facilities, the material properties of the blade and vane are degraded by the daily start-stop operations arising from the thermo mechanical cycle. We surveyed the time dependent degradation of the HP blade and vane to gather basic data for life assessment and damage analysis. The EOH(equivalent operating hours) of the blades were 23,686, 27,909, and 52,859 and the EOH of the vanes were 28,714 and 52,859, respectively. With increased operating hours, the shape of the primary ${\gamma}$' precipitate transformed from cubic to spherical, and its average size also increased. The leading edge area of the blades and the center of the vanes had the worst morphology, and this tendency agrees with the microhardness results. The thickness of the thermally grown oxide at the outer surface of the bond coat increased with increased operating hours.

TiAlN films were deposited on WC-5Co substrates with different buffer layers by D.C. magnetron sputtering. The films were evaluated by microstructural observations and measuring of preferred orientation, hardness value, and adhesion force. As a process variable, various buffer layers were used such as TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN. TiAlN coating layer showed columnar structures which grew up at a right angle to the substrates. The thickness of the TiAlN coating layer was about $1.8{\mu}m$, which was formed for 200 minutes at $300^{\circ}$. XRD analysis showed that the preferred orientation of TiAlN layer with TiN buffer layer was (111) and (200), and the specimens of TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/CrN, TiAlN single layer have preferred orientation of (111), respectively. TiAlN single layer and TiAlN/TiAl showed good adhesion properties, showing an over 80N adhesion force, while TiAlN/TiN film showed approximately 13N and the TiAlN/CrN was the worst case, in which the layer was destroyed because of high internal residual stress. The value of micro vickers hardness of the TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl and TiAlN/TiN layers were 2711, 2548 and 2461 Hv, respectively.

The hypervelocity impact simulations of space objects and structures are performed using LS-DYNA. Space objects with spherical, conical, and hollow cylindrical shapes are modeled using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). The direct and indirect impact zones of a space structure are modeled using the SPH and finite element methods, respectively. The Johnson-Cook material model and Mie-Grüneisen Equation of State are used to represent the nonlinear behavior of metallic materials in hypervelocity impact. In the hypervelocity impact simulations, various impact conditions are considered, such as the shape of the space object, the thickness of the space structure, the impact angle, and the impact velocity. The shapes of debris clouds are quantitatively classified based on the geometric parameters. Conical space objects provide the worst debris clouds for all impact conditions.

PURPOSE. To characterize the microstructure of three yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics and to compare their hardness, indentation fracture resistance (IFR), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and fatigue flexural strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 3Y-TZP (Vita YZ HT), 4Y-PSZ (Vita YZ ST) and 5Y-PSZ (Vita YZ XT), following the ISO 6872/2015 guidelines for BFS testing (final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter, 0.7 and 1.2 ± 0.1 mm in thicknesses). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed, and mechanical properties were assessed by Vickers hardness, IFR, quasi-static BFS and fatigue tests. RESULTS. All ceramics showed similar chemical compositions, but mainly differed in the amount of yttria, which was higher as the amount of cubic phase in the diffractogram (5Y-PSZ > 4Y-PSZ > 3Y-TZP). The 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ specimens showed surface defects under SEM, while 3Y-TZP exhibited greater grain uniformity on the surface. 5Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP presented the highest hardness values, while 3Y-TZP was higher than 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ with regard to the IFR. The 5Y-PSZ specimen (0.7 and 1.2 mm) showed the worst mechanical performance (fatigue BFS and cycles until failure), while 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ presented statistically similar values, higher than 5Y-PSZ for both thicknesses (0.7 and 1.2 mm). Moreover, 3Y-TZP showed the highest (1.2 mm group) and the lowest (0.7 mm group) degradation percentage, and 5Y-PSZ had higher strength degradation than 4Y-PSZ group. CONCLUSION. Despite the microstructural differences, 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP had similar fatigue behavior regardless of thickness. 5Y-PSZ had the lowest mechanical performance.
This study investigated the quality characteristics of white pan bread with banana addition. This analysis was through mixograph and stickiness of dough, fermentation rate, TPA, crumbScan image analysis, color, moisture contents and acceptance test. Mixograph peak time presented 4~5 minutes on every sample. However, CON, B10 and B20 sample presented more than 60%, and B30, B40 presented less than 60% at peak value (%). The result indicated that banana addition increased as the stickiness decreased. The fermentation rate generally increased, but the sample B40 decreased after 75 minutes. The result of crust and inside color, CON was the highest on lightness L value, B40 was the highest on both red a value and yellow b value. The result of pH showed that B40 was the lowest, and more banana addition made pH decreased. Thus, adding banana influences negatively on volume and cost of the product. The image analysis through crumbScan did not show any significant difference on crust thickness and distortion of crumb fineness. On the other hand, CON value was 774.33 that was the lowest, and B40 value was 927.66 which is the highest on the density of crumb fineness. Hardness showed a significant difference; B40 was the lowest, and Control was the highest. Moisture contents generally had a noticeable difference; CON value was the highest, and banana addition increased as the value decreased. At the result of acceptance test, one of the sensory tests, B20 showed the highest grade, and B40 showed the worst. Based on the above results of characteristic difference, banana addition could influence volume of the bread negatively.
This study was carried out to evaluate bending property on principal domestic species such as sargent cherry(Prunus sargentii), bitter wood(Picrasma quassioides), horn beam(Carpinus laxiflora), cork oak(Quercus variabilis), birch(Betula schmidtii), painted maple(Acer mono), basswood(Tilia amurensis), red pine(Pinus densiflora), pitch pine(Pinus rigtda), royal pawlonia(Paulownia tomentosa) by microwave heating. In this study, radius of curvature(ROC) for bending process was classified by radius of curvature(ROC) of bending plate such as 4 cm, 6 cm, and 10 cm, and thickness of metal-strap(TMS) was 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm. Bending process was successfully operated for 100 percent in bitter wood, horn beam, birch and painted maple. On the other hand, there was a success rate of 58 percent in sargent cherry and 83 percent in cork oak and 29 percent in basswood and 8 percent in royal pawlonia which is the worst bending property. All specimens of basswood and royal pawlonia were broken at 4 cm of ROC. Success rate of bending property was shown 44 percent in red pine and 56 percent in pitch pine. TMS has an effect on only drying speed in drying process than difficulty and facility of bending property. It was considered that the thinner TMS in drying process is the faster in drying speed of bent wood.

In this paper, the effects of separation distance from a thick radar cover on the performance of 24 GHz band radar was studied through experiments. When a polycarbonate radar cover with a thickness of 10 mm was placed in front of the radar, the variations in radar performance according to the change in the separation distance between the radar and the radar cover was compared with the case without the radar cover. As a radar performance indicator, the distance measured from the radar was used, and the distance was measured using the radar when a person moves away from the radar at a constant speed in the hallway of the building and then approaches again. The separation distance between the radar and radar cover was tested at 2 mm, 5 mm, and 20 mm, respectively. When there was no radar cover, the distance could be measured up to 49.64 m and the error was the lowest. When the separation distance was 2 mm, there was a section where distance measurement was not possible starting from 37.61 m, so the performance was the worst. When the separation distance was increased to 5 mm and 20 mm, the distance was measured up to 49.56 m, but the section where the error between the measured distance and the expected distance was large occurred more often than when there was no radar cover.
To fulfill applicability of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, it is important that this model passes through a careful calibration and uncertainty analysis. In recent years, many researchers have come up with various uncertainty analysis techniques for SWAT model. To determine the differences and similarities of typical techniques, we applied three uncertainty analysis procedures to Chungju Dam watershed (6,581.1 $km^2$) of South Korea included in SWAT-Calibration Uncertainty Program (SWAT-CUP): Sequential Uncertainty FItting algorithm ver.2 (SUFI2), Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE), Parameter Solution (ParaSol). As a result, there was no significant difference in the objective function values between SUFI2 and GLUE algorithms. However, ParaSol algorithm shows the worst objective functions, and considerable divergence was also showed in 95PPU bands with each other. The p-factor and r-factor appeared from 0.02 to 0.79 and 0.03 to 0.52 differences in streamflow respectively. In general, the ParaSol algorithm showed the lowest p-factor and r-factor, SUFI2 algorithm was the highest in the p-factor and r-factor. Therefore, in the SWAT model calibration and uncertainty analysis of the automatic methods, we suggest the calibration methods considering p-factor and r-factor. The p-factor means the percentage of observations covered by 95PPU (95 Percent Prediction Uncertainty) band, and r-factor is the average thickness of the 95PPU band.
This study considers the environmental factors affecting propagation loss and sonar performance in the continental regions of the East Coast Sea of Korea. Water mass distributions appear to change dramatically in a few weeks. Simple calculation with the case when the NKCW (North Korean Cold Water) develops shows that the difference in propagation loss may reach in the worst up to 10dB over range 5km. Another factor, an eddy, has typical dimensions of 100-200km in diameter and 150-200m in thickness. Employing a typical eddy and assuming frequency to be 100Hz, its effects on propagation loss appear to make lower the normal formation of convergence zones with which sonars are possible to detect long-range targets. The change of convergence zones may result in 10dB difference in received signals in a given depth. Thermal fronts also appear to be critical restrictions to operating sonars in shallow waters. Assuming frequency to be 200Hz, thermal fronts can make 10dB difference in propagation loss between with and without them over range 20km. An observation made in one site in the East Coast Sea of Korea reveals that internal waves may appear in near-inertial period and their spectra may exist in periods 2-17min. A simulation employing simple internal wave packets gives that they break convergence zones on the bottom, causing the performance degradation of FOM as much as 4dB in frequency 1kHz. An acoustic experiment, using fixed source and receiver at the same site, shows that the received signals fluctuate tremendously with time reaching up to 6.5dB in frequencies 1kHz or less. Ambient noises give negative effects directly on sonar performance. Measurements at some sites in the East Coast Sea of Korea suggest that the noise levels greatly fluctuate with time, for example noon and early morning, mainly due to ship traffics. The average difference in a day may reach 10dB in frequency 200Hz. Another experiment using an array of hydrophones gives that the spectrum levels of ambient noises are highly directional, their difference being as large as 10dB with vertical or horizontal angles. This fact strongly implies that we should obtain in-situ information of noise levels to estimate reasonable sonar performance. As one of non-stationary noise sources, an eel may give serious problems to sonar operation on or under the sea bottoms. Observed eel noises in a pier of water depth 14m appear to have duration time of about 0.4 seconds and frequency ranges of 0.2-2.8kHz. The 'song'of an eel increases ambient noise levels to average 2.16dB in the frequencies concerned, being large enough to degrade detection performance of the sonars on or below sediments. An experiment using hydrophones in water and sediment gives that sensitivity drops of 3-4dB are expected for the hydrophones laid in sediment at frequencies of 0.5-1.5kHz. The SNR difference between in water and in sediment, however, shows large fluctuations rather than stable patterns with the source-receiver ranges.
