Recently, many enterprises are introducing a workflow management system for the successful implementation of BPR(Business Process Reengineering). Proposed in this study is the workflow management system which has a light-weight component structure and an XPDL(XML Process Definition Language) file interpretation facility. The XPDL is the standard process definition exchange format developed by WfMC(Workflow Management Coalition). The major causes of inefficiency at current implementations of workflow management systems are the centralized workflow engine structure and the use of proprietary workflow definition format among most solutions. The proposed light-weight component structure in this study is the intermediate structure that takes the strength of both centralized and distributed workflow engines. And a prototype workflow system which uses an XPDL process definition file as input is developed through the thorough analysis of functional requirements.
This paper proposes a control path analysis mechanism to be used in the workflow mining framework maximizing the workflow traceability and re discoverability by analyzing the total sequences of the control path perspective of a workflow model and by rediscovering their runtime enactment history from the workflow log information. The mechanism has two components One is to generate the total sequences of the control paths from a workflow mode by transforming it to a control path decision tree, and the other is to rediscover the runtime enactment history of each control path out of the total sequences from the corresponding workflow's execution logs. Eventually, these rediscovered knowledge and execution history of a workflow model make up a control path oriented intelligence of the workflow model. which ought to be an essential ingredient for maintaining and reengineering the qualify of the workflow model. Based upon the workflow intelligence, it is possible for the workflow model to be gradually refined and finally maximize its qualify by repeatedly redesigning and reengineering during its whole life long time period.

A workflow process (or business process) management system helps to define, execute, monitor and manage workflow models deployed on a workflow-supported enterprise, and the system is compartmentalized into a modeling subsystem and an enacting subsystem, in general. The modeling subsystem's functionality is to discover and analyze workflow models via a theoretical modeling methodology like ICN, to graphically define them via a graphical representation notation like BPMN, and to systematically deploy those graphically defined models onto the enacting subsystem by transforming into their textual models represented by a standardized workflow process definition language like XPDL. Before deploying those defined workflow models, it is very important to inspect its syntactical correctness as well as its structural properness to minimize the loss of effectiveness and the depreciation of efficiency in managing the corresponding workflow models. In this paper, we are particularly interested in verifying very large-scale and massively parallel workflow models, and so we need a sophisticated analyzer to automatically analyze those specialized and complex styles of workflow models. One of the sophisticated analyzers devised in this paper is able to analyze not only the structural complexity but also the data-sequence complexity, especially. The structural complexity is based upon combinational usages of those control-structure constructs such as subprocesses, exclusive-OR, parallel-AND and iterative-LOOP primitives with preserving matched pairing and proper nesting properties, whereas the data-sequence complexity is based upon combinational usages of those relevant data repositories such as data definition sequences and data use sequences. Through the devised and implemented analyzer in this paper, we are able eventually to achieve the systematic verifications of the syntactical correctness as well as the effective validation of the structural properness on those complicate and large-scale styles of workflow models. As an experimental study, we apply the implemented analyzer to an exemplary large-scale and massively parallel workflow process model, the Large Bank Transaction Workflow Process Model, and show the structural complexity analysis results via a series of operational screens captured from the implemented analyzer.
Workflow mining is a newly emerging research issue for rediscovering and reengineering workflow models from workflow logs containing information about workflows being executed on the workflow engine. In this paper, we proposed workcase mining which was used dependency among activities. Main purpose of this paper is to minimize discrepancies between the modeled workflow process and the enacted workflow process as it is actually being executed. That is, we can get a complete set of activity firing sequences on buildtime. Besides, we can discover from workflow logs that which path out of all reachable paths a workcase has actually followed through on runtime. For this purpose we proposed two algorithm, the one is 'Activily-Dependent Net Algorithm' and the other is 'E-Walk Series Analysis Algorithm'.
Owing to the developed If industry, many people are more and more interested in Workflow which is an automated business processing system. In this paper, we present basic structures and various parallel processing structures of a workflow using EMFG (Extended Mark Flow Graph) that makes conceptional design available. And then, We design a workflow with EMFG. We propose the commitability verification method to check whether a workflow can complete or not and the logical bug verification method to find whether invalid components exist or not by using simulation result of it. The proposed EMFG modeling and analysis method for a workflow make it possible to become a visual and formal design. Also, it makes intuitional and mathematical analysis possible.
In this paper, we propose a novel analysis method and its algorithms to perform the betweenness centrality measurements on a valued and directed workflow-supported social network. The conventional workflow-supported social network model is to represent the existences of task transferring relationships among their performers by using a binary social network. However, it is necessary to consider not only the existences of task transferring relationships but also their quantities and directions in order to obtain much more effective and sophisticated analysis results. In conclusion, this paper newly defines a concept of valued and directed workflow-supported social network, and its betweenness centrality analysis method and algorithms. Especially, to verify the proposed method and algorithms, we try to apply the conventional method and the proposed method to an example workflow model respectively, and compare their betweenness centrality analysis results.
The size of observation data in astronomy has been increasing exponentially with the advents of wide-field optical telescopes. This means the needs of changes to the way used for large-scale astronomy data analysis. The complexity of analysis tools and the lack of extensibility of computing environments, however, lead to the difficulty and inefficiency of dealing with the huge observation data. To address this problem, this paper proposes a workflow execution system for analyzing large-scale astronomy data efficiently. The proposed system is composed of two parts: 1) a workflow execution manager and its RESTful endpoints that can automate and control data analysis tasks based on workflow templates and 2) an elastic resource manager as an underlying mechanism that can dynamically add/remove virtualized computing resources (i.e., virtual machines) according to the analysis requests. To realize our workflow execution system, we implement it on a testbed using OpenStack IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) toolkit and HTCondor workload manager. We also exhaustively perform a broad range of experiments with different resource allocation patterns, system loads, etc. to show the effectiveness of the proposed system. The results show that the resource allocation mechanism works properly according to the number of queued and running tasks, resulting in improving resource utilization, and the workflow execution manager can handle more than 1,000 concurrent requests within a second with reasonable average response times. We finally describe a case study of data reduction system as an example application of our workflow execution system.

In this paper, we build a theoretical framework for quantitatively measuring and graphically representing the degrees of closeness centralization among performers assigned to enact a workflow procedure. The degree of closeness centralization of a workflow-performer reflects how near the performer is to the other performers in enacting a corresponding workflow model designed for workflow-supported organizational operations. The proposed framework comprises three procedural phases and four functional transformations, such as discovery, analysis, and quantitation phases, which carry out ICN-to-WsoN, WsoN-to-SocioMatrix, SocioMatrix-to-DistanceMatrix, and DistanceMatrix-to-CCV transformations. We develop a series of algorithmic formalisms for the procedural phases and their transformative functionalities, and verify the proposed framework through an operational example. Finally, we expatiate on the functional expansion of the closeness centralization formulas so as for the theoretical framework to handle a group of workflow procedures (or a workflow package) with organization-wide workflow-performers.

In this paper, we extract the quantitative relation data of activities from the workflow event log file recorded in the XES standard format and connect them to rediscover the workflow process model. Extract the workflow process patterns and proportions with the rediscovered model. There are four types of control-flow elements that should be used to extract workflow process patterns and portions with log files: linear (sequential) routing, disjunctive (selective) routing, conjunctive (parallel) routing, and iterative routing patterns. In this paper, we focus on four of the factors, disjunctive routing, and conjunctive path. A framework implemented by the authors' research group extracts and arranges the activity data from the log and converts the iteration of duplicate relationships into a quantitative value. Also, for accurate analysis, a parallel process is recorded in the log file based on execution time, and algorithms for finding and eliminating information distortion are designed and implemented. With these refined data, we rediscover the workflow process model following the relationship between the activities. This series of experiments are conducted using the Large Bank Transaction Process Model provided by 4TU and visualizes the experiment process and results.
Recently, many organizations such as companies or institutions have demanded induction of very large-scale workflow management system in order to process a large number of business-instances. Workflow-related vendors have focused on physical extension of workflow engines based on device-level clustering, so as to provide very large-scale workflow services. Performance improvement of workflow engine by simple physical-connection among computer systems which don't consider logical-level software architecture lead to wastes of time and cost for construction of very large-scale workflow service environment. In this paper, we propose methodology for performance improvement based on logical software architectures of workflow engine. We also evaluate scalable performance between workflow engines using the activity instance based architecture and workcase based architecture, our proposed architecture. Through analysis of this test's result, we can observe that software architectures to be applied on a workflow engine have an effect on scalable performance.
