Development of Earned Value Management System by Using Visualization Index and WBS Map (시각화 지표 및 좌표식 정보분류체계에 의한 공정.공사비 통합관리시스템 개발)

  • Work breakdown structure (WBS) can be used as an information center in earned value management system (EVMS) for the construction project. Because EVMS results, such as schedule variance and cost variance, are analyzed for the selected WBS code, the role of WBS code is important in EVMS. This study suggests a methodology for organizing WBS map with a quadrant. It can represent the project organization collectively by work level in a coordinate system. And the study developed an EVMS tool based on the WBS map and this tool can visualize various attribute indexes of EVMS by color symbols. Those methodologies can be used for improving practical application of EVMS.

A Neural Network Model for Selecting a Piling Method of Building Construction (건축공사 말뚝공법 선정을 위한 신경망 모델 개발)

  • As a construction project in urban area tends to be high-rise and huge, the importance of the project's underground work, in terms of the cost and the schedule, is gradually increasing. It's extremely significant to choose a proper filing method, at the stage of underground work. However, in piling work many change orders have been occurred since a piling method is experientially selected based on uncertain information and many earth factors to consider. It has effects on the cost and the schedule of the project. In this study, we have suggested a decision model for piling method that can be used to determine and verify the suitable piling method in design and pre-construction phase of a project. Based on historical data, a neural network model has already proven to be efficient. The tests of the model for selecting a suitable piling method have progressed exactly with the data of 150 piling works which were done room 2000 to 2004 in Korea. The optimization or the developed neural network model has progressed with the data for teaming. The validity of the neural network model has been verified.

  • Since 2005, the production of feature 3D animation has been growing up worldwide and technology of hardware and software has been advanced fully enough to get over the limitation of visual expression, so that rendering weight of the whole work process is getting more important. A final file in the state right before rendering increases. the data size gets bigger. Therefore, if such final file is rendered as it is, the production schedule may not be met. For, some needless time shall be spent to call and save a high-capacity file in amendment work and to execute the rendering entirely again in addition to amendment. In this study, Maya API [1]was used to study the efficient information amendment method of extracting the rendering layers' files in order to develop a tool that executes rendering by applying such method. As the result, compliance to production schedule that is important in animation production can be done through the independent rendering tool based layer rendering that can maximize the efficiency of amendment work.

  • Last Planner System (LPS) developed by Lean Construction Institute consists of four steps: Master Schedule, Phase Schedule, Lookahead Planning and Weekly Work Plan. This paper focuses on the process of measuring Percent of Plan Completed (PPC) at the weekly Work Plan stage. PPC means the percentage of weekly assignments completed. According to the results of the researches that deal with PPC from many other countries, we can assure the benefits or using PPC. However the concept of PPC is unfamiliar in Korea construction industry. This paper analyzes the cases in which PPC is applied in other countries and compares them with the production control system in Korean construction industry. The results of this research will provide the time management system for using PPC in Korea.

  • Recent research has been ongoing for modular buildings in the country, and interest increases. However, in accordance with legal restrictions in the country with regard to Project Delivery system of Modular Building, the activation of modular buildings industry is obstructed. In Korea, in accordance with national contract law, the construction contract is apply to the project delivery system of modular buildings, and in accordance with Framework Act on the Construction Industry, The project delivery system of modular buildings has to be a separate order. The definition of separate order in contract as defined in the law is that the electric work and Communication work and digestion facility work has to be separate each contract in order to be ensured professionalism. In accordance with law, the project delivery system of modular buildings is that the contract for construction is concluded with the Owner and the Construction Contractor and the contract for goods is concluded with the construction Contractor and modular manufacturer. Due to these project delivery system, the domestic factory production rate when making a modular unit is significantly reduced compared to the rate of factory production abroad and the domestic factory production rate is estimated to 10-20%. Due to the factory production rate is also low, despite what can be done at the factory the workload in construction field increases. According to the workload in field increases, the effect of the schedule reduction can be reduced. It resolved to form a consortium with a modular manufacturer and construction companies or the contract is concluded with Owner, modular manufacturer and construction companies in each. In this paper, we propose a specific project delivery system for modular building to solve the problem of the low factory production rate and the problem of schedule reduction. Through this paper, due to the variety of project delivery system on modular buildings is expected to contribute to the activation of modular buildings.

  • This paper is a work scheduling for design of piping Department of chemical plant using accumulated curve. Accumulated curve prepared by analysis of performance data, collected executed manhours for chemical plant of "D" Company during the past two years. It compared scheduled manhours with actual used manhours up to six months, put into the form of figures and charts the results can he summarized as below; 1) It can he found an important factor of critical control thus piping department got 30% of total scheduled menhours. 2) A plan of manpower mobilization can be scheduled before work starting. 3) Project progress can he found easily as put into the form of figures and charts for schedule to actual.

  • In tall building construction, It is important to reduce construction duration of slab form work. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the required performance for reduction of construction duration in slab form work of tall buildings. We surveyed the required performance and their degrees of importance and economical efficiency through the interview and questionnaire survey by related experts. This study proposes the guideline to develop improved formwork system for reduction of construction duration.

  • Because of world financial crisis, The Korea domestic construction industry has been damaged hugely on material supplying work. A current domestic material supply system can't react properly on a great rise of foreign exchange rate and raw material price, so the system has a problem which is not properly supplying material. To solve this problem, a more innovative material supply work system is seriously needed than ever. So this study wants to improve material supply system for supplying material right time, right place through applying a web-based system. Applying this, overall process of material-supply-work can be done on a web-based system for immediately understanding change of ordering and warehousing by material-supply-schedule to a domestic construction field.

  • Construction management is essential for a achieving any pre-determined objective. It is however seen that in spite of construction management, majority of the project do not keep up their original time schedule and their completion cost is also higher as compared with the estimated cost The main reason for overrun in time and cost is that the planning at the outset of the project was not adequate or method of planning was not a refined one. In this research work, I showed the overall conditions of construction work and management in Sylhet city of Bangladesh and found many drawbacks in the construction management after completing my research. I found several factors affecting proper construction management and I have provided brief results. I have also provided some recommendations after my research work.

  • GS E&C had developed construction management system, PMS which is based on EVMS in 1997. Recently, TPMS has developed for effective construction management through applying daily schedule management and JIT on materials, labors, equipments focusing field work. TPMS realizes "Shielding" and "Make-Ready Process" which are the main concept of Lean construction. Through this system, it can manage and plan daily field work, support the field work related material, labor, and equipment planning, and minimizes the non-valuable process. This paper introduces the concept of TPMS, and through established system, it can lead the construction culture and raise the competitive power of construction industry
