  • SmartCrown is a system to control the plate crown by shifting the sine-shaped work rolls in the axial direction. The control range of the plate crown depends on a depth of sine-shaped roll profile because the roll radius varies continuously along the axial direction. When the roll profile is changed to improve the control range, the contact stress between the work roll and the back-up roll also changes. In the current study, the contact stress for various profiles and rolling conditions were analyzed using the finite element method and compared with results from Hertzian contact theory. A submodel method is used to increase the accuracy of the finite element analysis. The analysis results showed that the maximum increase in the contact stress was only 53MPa, so it is anticipated that no back-up roll spalling will occur.

  • In hot strip rolling, the work roll profile is one of the main factors in predicting and correcting the strip profile. Various studies concerning the wear profile and the thermal crown of work roll have been performed, and the results of these studies have shown that the work roll profile must be predicted accurately so as to efficiently control the strip qualities such as thickness, crown, flatness, and camber. Therefore, a precise prediction model of roll profile is called for in a perfect shape control system. In this paper, a genetic algorithm was applied to improve on the roll profile prediction model in hot strip rolling. In this approach, the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of a numerical model so as to cover the diverse design variables and objective functions. A genetic algorithm was adopted for conducting design iteration for optimization to determine the coefficient of the numerical model for minimization of errors in the result of the calculated value and the measured data. A comparative analysis showed a satisfactory conformity between them..

  • In hot strip mills, Portable Roll Scanner (the portable roll surface temperature and profile measuring device) can be used to calibrate on-line Process models for strip crown and flatness by measuring the thermal expansion and wear profile of the rolls. And the surface temperature measurement can be used to optimize the roll cooling system. Portable Roll Scanner consists of the measuring device, which has two contact inductive distance transducers for roll profile measurement and one infrared Pyrometer for surface temperature measurement, and computer-based controller that is equipped with the measuring device. By the wireless data communication, the data is transferred to the memory of notebook for further analysis. After roll extraction from mills, Portable Roll Scanner measure the roll profile and surface temperature simultaneously along the work roll face and display the results in the TFT color monitor of notebook. Portable Roll Scanner is useful at mill-side and roll grinding shop.

  • A mathematical model for the stress free surface profile in Over-Round and Round-Oval grove rolling, which can be used effectively in the calculation of pass area, is presented. The new model has generality, simplicity and accuracy for practical usage. The stress free surface profile of an outgoing stock can be modeled when the maximum spread of it known a priori. The equation for the stress free surface profile is formulated from the linear interpolation of the radius of curvature of an incoming stock and that of roll groove to the axis direction. In developing the analytical model, the effect of rolling temperature and friction between roll and work piece(stock) were not considered since the geometry of roll groove and the incoming work piece were assumed a dominant factor which decides the stress free surface profile of the outgoing stock. A simulation with the analytical model developed also has been carried out to demonstrate the stress free surface profile of the outgoing stock.

  • To have high flatness quality of hot rolled strip in the hot strip finishing mill train, a new inter-stand tension profile measuring device of segmented looper roll type(coined as Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper, FlatSIL) and a new flatness control system have been developed in this study. The device measures the strip tension profile across the strip width and informs the strip wave pattern to new flatness control system where work roll bending mode to relieve the strip wave is determined. The existing automatic shape control system which uses laser type shape-meter installed at the outlet of the last finishing mill stand strip tension between down coiler and last finishig mill since the latent wave concealed by the strip tension between down coiler and last finishing mill stand cannot be measured by the laser distance-meter. Thus the existing shape control system is not able to control the flatness through the full strip length. The new flatness control system, however, works for full strip length during strip rolling as far as the tension profile measuring device and work roll bender are on. With the new flatness control system, work roll bender is automatically controller to minimize the latent wave of the running strip and the flatness quality as well as strip travelling stability has been noticeably improved from strip head through body to tail.

  • Sendzimir rolling mill is widely used for rolling hard materials such as stainless steel due to its small work roll diameter and shape controllability using two effective actuators, AS-U-Roll crown adjustment and lst. intermediate roll shifting. However, in comparison with 4-high or 6-high mills, it is noteasy to get good strip or excellent flatness because Z-mill has small diameter of work rolls which are easily deformed by load. A new mathematical model based on the method of dividing roll and strip into multo-portions was used to develop strip profile prediction software. Using the developed software, several influencing factors related to rolled strip profile for Z-Mill were tested analytically and characterized for the effective shape control. The effects of adjusting shape control actuators of Z-Mill on strip profile were also examined and discussed in detail.

  • To find a way for establishing work roll initial crown according to roll conditions, computer simulation for predicting plate crown in plate mill is done and effects of roll conditions on plate crown is analysed. Roll gap profile and plate crown are measured to be compared to the calculated values. As a result,a regression equation to establish work roll initial crown according to roll cooditions such as backup roll diameter, backup roll crown and work roll crown is obtained.

  • According to the number of cold-rolled coils, the amount of roll wear and thermal expansion, and roll gap profile were calculated, by using the actual data from the finishing mill. Also, based on those data, the calculations of the deflection, the flattening, and the contact pressure of vwork rolls and backup rolls were made respectively. Specially, in the calculation of contact pressure, the numerical results were obtained not only during the normal rolling, but also during the abnormal rolling, by modeling mathematically the dynamic impact force which occurs when the head section of the strip is threading through rolls. With those results the growth of the fatigue region and the fatigue damage of rolls were predicted. Also the optimum roll-grinding depth was determined to maximize the roll life.

  • The force profile from strip to work roll is very important factor in deformation of roll. But It is not easy to predict the profile because strip crown affect its tendency. From finite element method result, some assumptions can be obtained and the roll force profile model is derived. Also the tension profile and lateral strain are derived. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with finite element calculation result.
