  • In this study, 13 water soluble polymers(6 natural polymer, 7 synthetic polymer) were treated on Hanji. Mechanical properties, morphology and oxidation index with thermal aging were measured on the aged Hanji, dewaxed Hanji and polymer treated Hanji. 3 natural polymer(such as CMC, EC, MC) and 3 synthetic polymers(such as PVA 1500, 2000, PEG 1500) treated Hanji had higher strength than other polymer treated Hanji. The oxidation index of 3% methyl cellulose solution treated Hanji did a little increase with thermal aging. Finally, methyl cellulose was found to be the most efficient method for strengthening the dewaxed Hanji. The best aging safety and thermal stability were obtained at the methyl cellulose 3% water solution.

  • Corn stover, hemp woody core and tobacco stalk were treated by dilute ammonium hydroxide soaking for improving the enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and xylan to monosaccharides by commercial cellulase mixtures. As more lignin removal by dilute ammonium hydroxide impregnation led to more enzymatic saccaharification of cellulose and xylan to monosaccharides (corn stover vs tobacco stalk). There was no relationship between xylan removal by dilute ammonium hydroxide impregnation and enzymatic saccharification of polysaccharides in pretreated samples. Except corn stover, lower temperature and longer treatment ($50^{\circ}C$-6 day) was less lignin removal than higher temperature and shorter treatment ($90^{\circ}C$ 16 h). Corn stover showed the highest enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and xylan but tobacco stalk showed the lowest.

  • As a part of utilizing the nanocellulose (NC) from lignocellulosic components of wood biomass, this paper reports preliminary results on the products of sulfuric acid hydrolysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of both NC and micro-sized cellulose fiber (MCF) isolated by acid hydrolysis from commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Field emission.scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to observe the acid hydrolysis suspension, NC, and MCF. The electron microscopy observations showed that the acid hydrolysis suspension, before separation into NC and MCF by centrifugation, was composed of nano-sized NCs and micro-sized MCFs. The morphology of isolated NCs was a whisker form of rod-like NCs. Measurements of individual NCs using TEM indicated dimensions of 6.96$\pm$0.87 nm wide by 178$\pm$55 nm long. Observations of the MCFs showed that most of the MCC particles had de-fibered into relatively long fibers with a diameter of 3-9 ${\mu}m$, depending on the degree of acid hydrolysis. These results suggest that proper technologies are required to effectively realize the potentials of both NCs and MCFs.

  • Hanji is a traditional Korean handmade paper, made of bast fibers of the paper mulberry. Its fiber furnish is much more expensive than wood fiber furnish. Hanji with a low basis weight requires additional opacity and smoothness for better writing and printing. Filler such as calcium carbonate can not be used to raise the opacity of Hanji because of its low retention in low basis weight paper and the high freeness of the Hanji fiber furnish. Addition of red algae pulp, which is prepared from marine red algae to the Hanji fiber furnish negated retention problems happening in the case of mineral filler addition, and produced a substantial improvement in the opacity and smoothness of Hanji. The higher retention was due to the much larger size of the red algae fibers compared to the mineral fillers. The improvement in opacity and smoothness were also due to the shape of the red algae fibers: that red algae fibers are narrower in widths and shorter in lengths than wood fibers results in increased surface area and smoothness.

  • Ammonia soaking treatment was introduced for hemp woody core pretreatment to increase enzymatic saccharification of polysaccharides. Portions of the xylan, cellulose, and lignin were removed by aqueous ammonia soaking, which improved the enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and xylan. Following ammonia soaking, 37% ($50^{\circ}C$-6 day treatment) to 61% ($90^{\circ}C$-16 h treatment) of the cellulose was converted to glucose and 33% ($50^{\circ}C$-6 day treatment) to 48% ($90^{\circ}C$-16 h treatment) of the xylan to xylose. Cellulose responded better to enzymatic saccharification than did xylan after the ammonia soaking treatment. Aqueous ammonia soaking pretreatment was more effective than electron beam irradiation for increasing enzymatic saccharification of xylan and cellulose in hemp woody core.

  • Residual extractives had a noticeable impact on the brightness of unbleached hardwood kraft pulps (trembling aspen). The brightness-impacting extractives were effectively removed by oxygen delignification. In addition, oxygen delignification was more effective in removing chromophores in hardwood unbleached kraft pulps than in those of softwood (loblolly pine). The residual extractives in unbleached hardwood kraft pulps also affected the pulp color, primarily redness and the L value. These redness-related extractives in unbleached hardwood kraft pulps were also effectively removed by oxygen delignification. There were no significant color differences between untreated and solvent-extracted oxygen-delignified aspen kraft pulps. The residual extractives in unbleached and oxygen-delignified softwood (loblolly pine) kraft pulps did not have a significant impact on either brightness or pulp color.

  • Hydrophobic property of Kapok fiber was investigated by sequential removal of its components by different extraction methods. Acetone extraction for the removal of the hydrophobic extractives, holo-cel-lulose preparation after the removal of lignin and xylan extraction by potassium hydroxide was applied. The degree of hydrophobicity of each samples were measured by the water sorption ability. The water sorption ability of Kapok fiber was increased by the sequential treatment of acetone extraction, holocellulose preparation and xylan removal. Based on holocellulose compositional analysis by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopic method, the unusual high amount of the acetyl groups in the holocellulose of Kapok partially contributed to the hydrophobicity of Kapok holocellulose fiber.

  • Hanji(Korean traditional paper) is made from bark of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki). For a long time, Hanji has been used in various fields, such as paintings, printing paper, as specialty paper. The utilization of Hanji will become more and more diverse. One of the characteristic properties of Hanji is a long life time comparing to western paper. The mucilage which must be used in Hanji manufacturing should effect the conservation properties of Hanji. The effectiveness of the mucilage in aging of Hanji was evaluated in this paper. Strength properties of thermal aged Hanji made with synthetic mucilage decreased more slowly than those of Hanji made with natural mucilage. As prolonged aging time, all Hanji made mucilage increased oxidation index. But, Hanji made with PAM was most stable in oxidation of cellulose.

  • During the last decades, global warming from the increased amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide has become a major political and scientific issue. Burning fossil fuels (natural gas, coal and oil) releases $CO_2$, which is also a major cause of global warming. Among the clean environment, wood pellets are considered as promising renewable fossil fuels because of clean burning characteristics, reduction of particulate and NOx emission from combustion. In Korea, more than 50% pellets have to be imported every year because of shortage of feedstocks. On the other hand, about 80% of wood pulps are greatly dependent upon overseas products due to limited forest resources. Under this situation, this study explored how efficiently we have to use forest biomass instead of total dependence on wood as raw materials for pellets.

  • Enzymatic deinking method can avoids the alkaline environment as usual required in chemical deinking, which consequently cuts chemical costs and reduced the white water pollution. The electrostatic wastepaper was dinked with commercial cellulolytic enzymes and surfactant in neutral pH and the effectiveness of deinking and the physical properties of deinked pulp were evaluated. The disintegrating efficiency of the electrostatic wastepaper in neutral pH was enhanced with enzyme treatments. Although the freeness of deinked pulp with enzymes was higher than that of deinked pulp with chemical de inking agents, the brightness of the enzymatic deinked pulp was slightly lower than that of the chemical deinked pulp. But, by additions of nonionic surfactants, the brightness of deinked pulp was increased with less residual ink particles and mechanical properties of enzymatic deinked pulp was improved compared to the deinked pulp of conventional alkaline method.
