Microscopic techniques were used to observe the microstructure of rice husk. Microscopic examination showed that two main components of husk, lemma and palea consisted of outer epidermis, layers of fibers, vascular bundles, parenchyma cells, and inner epidermis, in sequence from the outer to the inner surface. The outer epidermal walls were extremely thick, highly convoluted and lignified. The underlying fibers were also thick-walled and lignified. Parenchyma cells were thin-walled and unlignified. Inner epidermal cells were also unlignified. The outer surface of both lemma and palea were conspicuously ridged, but the lower surface had a flat appearance. As part of a detailed study to characterize rice husk using microscopic and micro-analytical techniques, distribution of silica was also examined, and is presented elsewhere. Rice husk can potentially be used as a raw material for making composite products and the observations presented here form valuable background information for our future work related to product development.

Acacia wood (Acacia mangium Willd.) is the most popular fast growing tree species planted in timber estate in Indonesia and is considered to be very valuable raw materials for structural composite products. The objective of the research was to evaluate the properties of OSB prepared from A. Mangium wood with or without immersing the strands to hot water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. MDI adhesive was used in 3 levels i.e., 3%, 5%, and 7%. The moisture content of strand was 7%. The results indicated that immersing strands in hot water for 2 hours at $80^{\circ}C$ prior to manufacture OSB improved significantly the mechanical peoperties (i.e., MOR and MOE) of OSB. The higher the adhesive content resulted in the better the dimensional stabilisation (i.e., water absorption and thickness swelling) and the mechanical properties (i.e., MOR, MOE and IB) of OSB. OSB prepared from hot-water immersed strands with 5% adhesive content has met all parameters requirement on the JIS A 5908 (2003) standard.

This study investigates the tensile and morphological properties of nanocomposites prepared from poly(lactic acid) (PLA), wood flour (WF) and montmorillonite (MMT) by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of PLA/WF composites, maleic anhydride grafted PLA (MAPLA) is synthesized as a compatibilizer. MAPLA prepared in the laboratory is characterized using FT-IR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy). From the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis for nanocomposites, we confirmed that silicate layers of MMT are intercalated and partially exfoliated. When 2 wt% MAPLA is added, the tensile strength and modulus of PLA/WF/MAPLA composites were higher than those of the PLA/WF composite. The addition of MMT increases the tensile modulus of PLA/WF/MAPLA composites but decreases the tensile strength.

This study investigates the thermal properties of nanocomposites prepared from poly(lactic acid) (PLA), wood flour (WF) and montmorillonite (MMT) by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of PLA/WF composites, maleic anhydride grafted PLA (MAPLA) is synthesized as a compatibilizer. MAPLA prepared in the laboratory is characterized using FR-IR. From SEM microphotographs, the presence of MAPLA has a positive effect on the mechanical properties of WF-reinforced PLA composites. The addition of WF/MAPLA into neat PLA increased the glass transition temperature ($T_g$). The addition of 1 to 5 wt% MMT into PLA/WF/MAPLA composite decreases the $T_g$. The cold crystallization temperature ($T_{cc}$) was decreased by the addition of MMT. The MMT could act as effective nucleating sites of PLA crystallization. The thermal stability evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is improved with the contents of MMT up to 3 wt%.

Particleboard(PB) is one of the most commonly used wood-based composite materials, which can be prepared by utilizing any kind of low grade wooden materials like waste wood which contains formaldehyde itself. Therefore, PB have been of considerable interest, in issues regarding the formaldehyde emission problems. Wood wastes are carbonized by the carbonization kiln at $800^{\circ}C$. Charcoal has been known as a formaldehyde adsorber. Thus, in this study, we fabricated PBs with carbonized waste particles cores, to examine the possibility of developing less formaldehyde emitting boards. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated by Korean Standard (KS F 3104). The moisture content of PBs ranged from 6.76 to 8.36%. Internal bond strengths decreased with the increase in the content of carbonized core particles. Formaldehyde emission showed minimum value at 25% of carbonized core particles, but the emission values increased when the amount of carbonized cote particles increased. When 25% of carbonized core particles was used, PBs met KS F 3104 standard properties.
The aim of the study is to use the by-products sawdust, formed during sawing and mandarin peel which are agricultural by products. The boards were manufactured by mixing the sawdust and mandarin peel at different mixing ratio and density. In terms of changes in surface temperature of ceramics, we could found that the velocity was fast in the early time of heat transfer until 10 minutes and after that the velocity increased but not very fast. At the elapsed time of 30 minutes, the surface temperature of ceramics increased with the carbonization temperature and rate of mandarin peel addition did not influence the surface temperature. Far - infrared emissivity had no constant tendency in rate of mandarin peel addition, it decreased with increase of carbonization temperature.
The woodceramics are porous amorphous carbon and glassy carbon composite materials. Woodceramics attracted a lot of attention in recent years because they are environmentally friendly and because of their unique functional characteristics such as catalysis, moisture absorption, deodorization, purification, carrier for microbial activity, specific stiffness, corrosion and friction resistance, and their electromagnetic shielding capacity. In this paper, we made new products of clay-woodceramics to investigate the industrial analysis and ethylene gas adsorption for basic data of building- and packging- materials keeping fruit fresh for a long time. Clay-woodceramics were carbonized for 3 h of heating in a special furnace under a gas flow of nitrogen(15 ml/min.) from 3 layers-clay-woodparticleboard made from pallet waste wood, phenol- formaldehyde resin(hereafter PF, Non volatile content:52%, resin content 30%), and clay(10%, 20% and 30%). Carbonization temperature was 400℃, 600℃ and 800℃. Experimental results shows that the higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the fixed carbon and the lower the volatile contents. The higher the clay content, the more the ash content. The higher the carbonization temperature, the more the ethylene gas adsorption. Carbonization temperature of 800℃ gave the best reslts as same as that of white charcoal and activated carbon.(800℃-clay-woodceramic: 5.36 ppm, white charcoal: 5.66 ppm, activated carbon: 5.79 ppm) The clay contents did not make difference of ethylene gas adsoption.
In this study, the boards were manufactured according to the mandarin peels addition rate using sawdust and mandarin orange peel. After that, the mechanical properties and density profile of ceramics prepared by conditions through resin impregnation process and carbonization process were investigated. The bending and compression strengths of ceramics tended to increase as the resin impregnation rate increased. When the resin impregnation rate was 70%, the highest values were 8.58 MPa and 14.77 MPa, respectively. Also, the mechanical properties of ceramics according to carbonization temperature showed the highest values at 1,200℃ for bending strength of 11.09 MPa and compression strength of 17.20 MPa. The bending strength and compression strength according to the mandarin peels addition rate showed the highest values at 8.62 MPa and 14.16 MPa, respectively, when the mandarin orange peel addition rate was 5%. The mechanical properties tended to decrease when the addition rate of mandarin orange was increased. The density profile of ceramics showed a similar tendency to the mechanical properties. It can be seen that the density distribution from the surface layer to the center layer is more uniform as the resin impregnation rate and carbonization temperature increase and the mandarin peels addition rate decreases.

Wooden structures are widely used, particularly in earthquake zones, owing to their light weight, ease of application, and resistance to the external environment. In this study, we aimed to improve the mechanical properties of laminated timber beams using novel hybrid systems [carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and wire rope]. Within the scope of this study, it is expected that using wood, which is an environmentally friendly and sustainable building element, will be more economical and safe than the reinforced concrete and steel elements currently used to pass through wide openings. The structural behavior of the hybrid-reinforced laminated timber beams was determined under the loading system. The experimental findings showed that the highest increase in the values of laminated beams reinforced with steel ropes was obtained with the 2N reinforcement, with a maximum load of 38 kN and a displacement of 137 mm. Thus, a load increase of 168% and displacement increase of 275% compared with the reference sample were obtained. Compared with the reference sample, a load increase of 92% and a displacement increase of 14% were obtained. Carbon fabrics placed between the layers with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) prevented crack development and provided significant interlayer connections. Consequently, the fabrics placed between the laminated wooden beams with the innovative reinforcement system will not disrupt the aesthetics or reduce the effect of earthquake forces, and significant reductions can be achieved in these sections.
This research was conducted to investigate the linear expansion and resistance properties of a composite board (com-ply). This board was made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) laminated using avocado (Persea americana), mahogany (Swietenia mahogani), and pine (Pinus merkusii) veneers. These three types of veneers were laminated on both surfaces of the MDF using adhesives, namely, epoxy and isocyanate. Glue (250 g·m-2) was spread on the surface, followed by cold press for 3 h with an applied pressure of 15 kg·cm-2. The research result revealed that com-ply exhibited an increased dimensional stability compared with MDF, indicated by reduction in water absorption, thickness swelling, and linear expansion. The com-ply made of the pine veneer and isocyanate adhesive exhibited high density, water absorption, thickness swelling, and screw withdrawal load. The com-ply that exhibited the strongest resistance to drywood termite attacks was the one made of the mahogany veneer and isocyanate adhesive. Moreover, the com-ply that exhibited the biggest weight loss (3.6 %) was made of the pine veneer and epoxy adhesive. The results of this research may facilitate in manufacturing com-ply using the selected veneer and adhesive without the application of hot press.
