  • At pH 7.4 (physiological pH), skin is permselective to cations, due to the net negative charge of the current passing channels (pores) in skin. This causes the convective solvent flow (electroosmotic flow) from anode to cathodal direction. In this work, we have investigated several factors (pH. current density and ionic strength) that can affect the electroosmotic flow. (omitted)

  • We explored the effects of dexamethasone on osteoclast precursors using BMMs. Dexamethasone inhibited the proliferation of BMMs. Furthermore, it stimulated the osteoclast formation via NFATc1 activation in the presence of RANKL. Since dexamethasone targeted the early stage of osteoclast formation, we investigated its effect on mRNA expression of GR and $IFN-{\beta}$. Whereas dexamethasone had no effects on GR expression in the presence of RANKL, it reduced the expression of $IFN-{\beta}$, suggesting that dexamethasone increased RANKL-induced osteoclast formation by modulating $IFN-{\beta}$.

  • A rapid and reproducible high performance liquid chromatographic assay of prazosin in human plasma was developed. After addition of internal standard (IS, terazosin hydrochloride) and alkalization of the plasma, the drug and IS were extracted into t-butylmethylether. The organic phase was back-extracted with 0.05% phosphoric acid and 50 ${\mu}$l of the acid solution was injected into a reverse-phase C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of water: acetonitrile: triethylamine = 75 : 25 : 0.1 (pH 5.0). The content of women's health education consisted of sex education, smoking, alcohol, exercise, nutrition, diet and stress management. “A Women and Heath” course was provided as an optional full term subject in the years of 2002 and 2003 at C University in G City. Out of 210 students who had chosen this course, 134 had agreed to participate in the research and had answered the same questionnaire which was given before the education and 14 weeks after the course at the last class. The findings are as follows: 1. It was found that the subjects have obtained knowledge mainly from television, radio, the Internet, women's magazines in order before the education. 2. Knowledge related to women"s health origionally scored low(average 1.92 out of 5). However, having completed a course on women and their health, they showed a significant increase of knowledge statistically(t=26.945, p= .001) with average score of 3.48. 3. Health promotion behaviors who had completed the course has statistically significantly increased (t=6.464, p= .001) compared to before the education. The results of this study are that by providing a women's health related course for college women on a regular basis, they could broaden their health related knowledge and become more active in practicing health promotion behaviors. This shows us the need to broaden the curriculum on women's health at the college level so that women have good knowledge and practice the knowledge for the sake of their health throughout their life.

  • Purpose: The study aimed to explore the health consequences that women experienced after miscarriage and the factors related to them. Methods: A convenience sample consisting of 102 women who had miscarried within 2 years was used. Women were recruited from hospitals and enterprises in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi Province. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire containing a physical and psychological symptoms checklist developed for this study. Results: More than 40% of the miscarriages occurred after 9 weeks of pregnancy and 35% of women were found to have had a previous miscarriage prior to this study. Psychological symptoms were more prevalent and prolonged than the physical symptoms, furthermore, the frequencies of the symptoms experienced were not consistent with the duration of symptoms. Employed women and women with early miscarriages complained of more physical symptoms; however, psychological symptoms were not different according to women's characteristics. Employment was a significant factor affecting physical symptoms. Conclusion: Health care professionals need to inform and educate women and the family of the potential health changes during the recovery after the miscarriage. Health consequences due to miscarriages also need to be incorporated in women's reproductive health care. Nursing care should consider factors of maternal age, employment status, and obstetrical conditions upon the apparent social changes.
