  • The concept is based on distributed wireless sensors that are attached to the incoming and outgoing power lines of secondary substations. A sensor measures only phase current characteristics of the wire it is attached to, is not synchronized to other sensors and does not need configuration of triggering levels. The main novelty of the concept is in detecting and locating faults by combining power distribution network characteristics on system level with low power sampling methods for individual sensors. This concept enables the sensor design to be simple, energy efficient and thus applicable in new installations and for retrofit purposes in both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

  • In this letter, we derive a tight closed form formula for an ergodic rapacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) for the application of wireless communications. The derived expression is a simple close-form formula to determine the ergodic capacity of MIMO systems. Assuming the channels are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh flat-fading between antenna pairs, the ergodic capacity can be expressed in a closed form as the finite sum of exponential integrals.

  • Wireless Sensor Network typically incorporates diverse applications within the same network. A sensor node may have multiple sensors i.e. light, temperature, seismic etc with different transmission characteristics. Each application has different characteristics and requirements in terms of transmission rates, bandwidth, packet loss and delay demands may be initiated towards the sink. In this paper we propose Heterogeneous Traffic Oriented Rate Control Protocol (HTRCP) which ensures efficient rate control for diverse applications according to the priority specified by the sink. Moreover. HTRCP ensures the node priority based hop by hop dynamic rate adjustment for high link utilization.

  • This paper investigates optimization-based base station (BS) placement. An optimization model is defined and the BS placement problem is transformed to a lexicographical stratified programming (LSP) model for a given trajectory, according to different accuracy requirements. The feasible region for BS deployment is obtained from the positioning system requirement, which is also solved with signal coverage problem in BS placement. The LSP mathematical model is formulated with the average geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) as the criterion. To achieve an optimization solution, a tolerant factor based complete stratified series approach and grid searching method are utilized to obtain the possible optimal BS placement. Because of the LSP model utilization, the proposed algorithm has wider application scenarios with different accuracy requirements over different trajectory segments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better BS placement result than existing approaches for a given trajectory.

  • In this paper, a smart constrained application protocol (CoAP)-based gateway with a border router is proposed for home safety services to remotely monitor the trespass, fire, and indoor air quality. The smart CoAP gateway controls a home safety sensor node with a pyroelectric infrared motion sensor, a fire sensor, a humidity and temperature sensor, and a non-dispersive infrared CO2 sensor and gathers sensing data from them. In addition, it can convert physical sensing data into understandable information and perform packet conversion as a border router for seamless connection between a low-power wireless personal area network (6LoWPAN) and the Internet (IPv6). Implementation and laboratory test results verify the feasibility of the smart CoAP gateway which especially can provide about 97.20% data throughput.

  • A class-E RF(Radio Frequency) power amplifier for wireless application is designed using standard CMOS technology. To drive the class-E power amplifier, a class-F RF power amplifier is used and the reliability characteristics are studied with a class-E load network. The reliability characteristic is improved when a finite-DC feed inductor is used instead of an RF choke with the load. After one year of operating, when the load is an RF choke the output current and voltage of the power amplifier decrease about 17% compared to initial values. But when the load is a finite DC-feed inductor the output current and voltage decrease 9.7%. The S-parameter such as input reflection coefficient(S11) and the forward transmission scattering parameter(S21) is simulated with the stress time. In a finite DC-feed inductor the characteristics of S-parameter are changed slightly compared to an RF-choke inductor. From the simulation results, the class-E power amplifier with a finite DC-feed inductor shows superior reliability characteristics compared to power amplifier using an RF choke.

  • Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging wireless communication technology which allows objects to be identified automatically. The tag anti-collision is a significant issue for fast identifying tags due to the shared wireless channel between tags and the reader during communication. The EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 which uses Q algorithm for the anti-collision is widely used in many applications such as consumer electronic device and supply chain. However, the increasing application of EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 which requires the dynamic environment makes the efficiency decrease critically. Furthermore, its frame length (size) determination and frame termination lead to the suboptimal efficiency. A new anti-collision algorithm is proposed to deal with the two problems for large-scale RFID systems. The algorithm has higher performance than the Q algorithm in the dynamic environment. Some simulations are given to illustrate the performance.
