With conventional orthodontics, it was difficult for the anchorage segments of the wire to be engaged passively in the brackets even with complicated bending. To overcome this limitation, a kind of indirect bonding, "passive bracketing", has been developed. The present article shows laboratory and clinical procedures of the passive bracketing

This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) of irregular shaped sheet metal product for blanking or piercing and bending operation. An approach to the system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the system is formulated form plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. This system has been written in AutoLIST on the AutoCAD and in customer tool kit on the SmartCAM with a personal computer and is composed of nine modules. the system is designed by considering several factors, such as material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, diameter and material of a wire, and availability of press. This system is capable of unfolding a formed sheet metal to give flat pattern and automatically account for the adjustment of bending allowances to match tooling requirements by checking dimensions and generating NC data automatically according to drawings of die-layout module. Results carried out in each module will provide efficiencies to the designer and the manufacture of blanking or piercing and bending die in this field.

A wire rope is comprised of several metal wires which are wound together like a helix and it can resist relatively large axial loads, as compared with bending and torsional loads. A shipbuilding crane for erection such as a floating crane, a gantry crane, and a crawler crane hoists up and down heavy blocks by using these wire ropes. Thus, it is necessary to find dynamic properties of a wire rope in order to safely lift the blocks using the crane. In this study, a formula for calculating the tension and torsional moment acting on wire ropes of the crane was derived based on the existing study, and then dynamic simulation of the crane was performed based on the formula. The result shows that the dynamic simulation can be applied to find the safe method for block erection of shipyards.

Experiments on the yield strength of pipe connectors made of metal wire, joint pins, pole pipes, multi span insertion joints, and T-clamp joints used in pipe houses were conducted. The strength of connections of a pipe connector made of metal wire was adequate but it had a big difference according to loading direction. Therefore as it is installed, its direction should be taken into consideration. The collapse load of pipes connected with a joint pin was lower than that of single pipes. In the part of frame member at which the great bending moment occurs, the use of joint pin should be avoided. Also experimental results showed that pole pipes for use in a part of frame buried under the ground were safe, and the strength of multi span insertion joints should be increased. The resistant moment of T-clamp was about 13.7% of a single pipe. In case that the external forces acting on left and right rafter are different. a unsymmetrical rotational force is produced at the multi span joint. If it is expected that the actual bending moment on the multi span joint is larger than resistant moment of T-clamp, a reinforcement to safely resist the rotational force is required.
Objective: Nickel-titanium alloy wire possesses excellent spring-back properties, shape memory and super-elasticity. In order to adapt this wire to clinical use, it is necessary to bend as well as to control its super-elastic force. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of heat treatment on the load-deflection properties and transitional temperature range (TTR) of nickel-titanium wires. Methods: Nickel-titanium wires of different diameters ($0.016"\;{\times}\;0.022"$, $0.018"\;{\times}\;0.025"$ and $0.0215"\;{\times}\;0.028"$) were used. The samples were divided into 4 groups as follows: group 4, posterior segment of archwire (24 mm) without heat treatment; group 2, posterior segment of archwire (24 mm) with heat treatment only; group 3, anterior segment with bending and heat treatment; group 4, anterior segment with bending and 1 sec over heat treatment. Three point bending test was used to evaluate the change in load-deflection curve and obtained DSC (different scanning calorimetry) to check changes in $A_f$ temperature. Results: In the three point bending test, nickel-titanium wires with heat treatment only had higher load-deflection curve and loading and unloading plateau than nickel-titanium wires without heat treatment. Nickel-titanium wires with heat treatment had lower Af temperature than nickel-titanium wires without heat treatment. Nickel-titanium wires with heat treatment and bending had higher load-deflection curve than nickel- titanium wires with heat treatment and nickel-titanium wires without heat treatment. Nickel-titanium with heat treatment of over 1 sec and bending had the highest load-deflection curve. Nickel-titanium wires with heat treatment and bending had lower Af temperature, Nickel-titanium wires with heat treatment of over Af sec and bending had the lowest Af temperature. Conclusion: From the results of this study, it can be stated that heat treatment for bending of Nickel-titanium wires does not deprive the superelastic property but can cause increased force magnitude due to a higher load-deflection curve.
In this study, a trapezoidal hollow ball is used, instead of a spherical hollow ball commonly used in void slab, to secure the high hollow ratio in the deck type void slab. The bending and shear performance was measured with consideration for the shape change of the hollow ball. And to confirm the effect of deck plate and truss wire on shear performance, experiments were performed depending on the installation directions of the one-way deck plate. As a result, the bending performance of the deck type void slab with a trapezoidal hollow ball was similar to that of the void slab with a spherical hollow ball. However, according to the data of shear strength examined, the contribution of shear performance enhancement of the truss wire had a more effect on the shear performance of deck type void slab, rather than the influence by changing of the shape of hollow ball. In the previous studies, the shear strength is reduced to about 60%, due to the reduction of the effective section of concrete by installation of hollow ball. But in this experiment, the maximum load of specimen, in which the deck was installed in horizontal direction, so expected to have no influence on the shear performance, was only reduced to about 87%, due to the truss framework of truss wire.
The shape of orthodontic retraction spring was varied and force system of each case was obtained using numerical analysis and verified with spring tester. The factors for obtaining biomechanically efficient spring under anatomic limitation were suggested as follows. 1. M/F ratio increases and L/D rate decreases as loop height increases. 2. M/F ratio increases and L/D rate decreases as incorporating more wire above minimum bending moment area. 3. M/F ratio decreases and L/D rate decrease as incorporating more wire below minimum bending moment area. 4. M/F ratio can not be greater than spring height no matter how much wire is incorporated at the apex of the loop. 5. Additional moment is necessary to obtain enough M/F ratio for translation under anatomical limitation. 6. Additional moment should be incorporated at every pah of the spring because M/F ratio and L/D rate decreases as horizontal spring length increases. 7. Material, cross section, and shape of the spring influence L/D rate, whereas M/F ratio is influenced by the shape of the spring independent from material and cross section.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of loop formation and heat treatment upon the elastic properties of orthodontic wires. The specimens selected were .016', .018', .016x.022', and .018x.022' sized stainless steel (standard) and cobalt-chromium-nickel wires, and were divided into 7 groups as; 1. straight non-heat treated 2. U looped non-heat treated 3. L looped non-heat treated 4. Circle looped non-heat treated 5. U looped heat treated 6. L looped heat treated 7. Circle looped heat treated Heat treatment was performed in Big Jane furnace at 850' F for 3 minutes. The elastic limit and the elastic range of each specimen were determined by bending test, and load deflection rate was computed from those values. The findings were as follows; 1. The formation of loop resulted in increased load-deflection rate for both stainless steel and cobalt-chromium-nickel wires. 2. The heat treated group showed higher load-deflection rate than non-heat treated group, which was more apparent in cobalt-chromiumnickel wire than in stainless steel wire. 3. L loop had the highest load-deflection rate among 3 types of loops, followed by U loop and circle loop. 4. The specimens with greater diameter displayed the more increase in load-deflection rate by looping and heat treatment.

Structure-borne noise and vibration is one of the main complaints of home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc. There have been many efforts to reduce the emitting noise and vibration. Mostly the efforts have been concentrated to optimize the mounts shape and its material properties realizing that the vibration power is mainly transmitted to the structure via mounts. It is known that softer mounts have the better vibration isolation effect. But mounts have another important function in addition to the vibration isolation. That is to support the motor and compressor safely. Thus mounts should be stiff enough to resist the supporting items. But the two properties, stiff and soft, are contradict each other. So the designer should compromise the two complicity properties properly in between. Noticing that, motors and compressors themselves are very quite until they are connected to the base structure via mounts, wire connecting idea was proposed in this work. Instead of using conventional mounts, as shown in Fig 4, compressor was mounted using six wires as shown in Fig 5. Since wire is very flexible in bending but stiff in tension, we can realize the ideal mount design requirements, stiff enough to support and soft enough to isolate vibration power. The suggesting idea was tested with an air conditioner outdoor unit.

The life of elevator wire ropes is one of the most important characteristics of an elevator, which is closely related to the safety of users and its maintenance policy. It is not cost effective to measure the lifetime of elevator wire ropes during their use. In this study, the life estimation of elevator wire ropes (8x19W-IWRC) is considered using accelerated degradation test data. A bending fatigue tester is used to perform the accelerated degradation tests, incorporating the acceleration factor of tensile force. Assuming that the life of wire ropes is log-normally distributed, two life estimation methods are suggested and their results are compared. The first method estimates the life of wire ropes utilizing the accelerated life model with pseudo lives obtained from a linear regression model. The second method estimates the life using a logistic model based on failure probability.
