This study was investigated the relationship between the temperature and the mortality of aged (${\geq}65$ yr) during the winter seasons from 1992 to 2007 in Seoul, Korea by utilizing climate data and death records. The study also estimated the future risks by employing the projections of the population in Seoul, Korea and climate change scenario of Korea from 2011 to 2030. The limitation of this study was the impossibility in the prediction of daily mortality counts. Therefore, daily death numbers could be predicted based on the future population projection for Korea and the death records of 2005. The result indicated that risks increased by 0.27%, 0.52%, 0.32% and 0.41% in association with the $1^{\circ}C$ decrease in daily minimum temperature from the mortality counts of total, respiratory, cardiovascular, and cardiorespiratory in the past date while 0.31%, 0.42%, 0.59% and 0.66% in the future. Based on the results obtained from this study, it is concluded that the risk in the future will be higher than the past date although there is an uncertainty in estimating death counts in the future.
The combination of early heading time, maturing time and short grain-filling period is very important to develop early varieties in winter barley. The 4 parental half diallel crosses (parents, $F_1$s, $F_2$s) were cultivated at the field. The heading date was from April 3 to 26, maturing date from May 15 to 27 and grain-filling period from 31 days to 42 days, showing that the varietal differences about the 3 traits were remarkable. According to half diallel cross analyses, Dongbori 1 for heading time (late heading) was dominant, but Oweolbori (early heading) was recessive, showing partial dominance with high additive component of genetic variance. Dongbori 1 for maturing time was dominant, but Oweolbori was recessive, showing partial dominance with high additive variance. Reno for grain-filling period (short grain-filling period) was dominant, but Oweolbori (long grain-filling period) was recessive with additive, and partial dominance. There were highly significant mean squares for both GCA and SCA effects on the heading and maturing times, and GCA/SCA ratios for all traits were high, showing the additive gene effects more important. Sacheon 6 and Oweolbori had greater GCA effects for early heading and maturing times, and Dongbori 1 and Reno had greater GCA effects for late times. GCA effects were highly significant in $F_1$ and $F_2$ generations, showing high GCA/SCA ratios (7.02). The heading and maturing times in field were positively correlated with antifreeze proteins concentrations, accumulation, resistance to photoinhibition and winter survival, respectively) but the grain-filling period did negatively correlated with the trails.

These experiments are being conducted to obtain data of plant height, panicle length, heading date, number of culm, and fresh and dry weight, crude protein, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), total digestible nutrients (TDN) by six times seeding of 10 days interval ranging from May 1st to June 21st for two types of barnyard millet from the Suwon area in Korea. In the early-heading type, IT 170609 (Echinochloa crus-galli), the plant height and the number of culm per square meters are decreased by late seeding relatively, and heading date is 7 to 10 days earlier than the late seeding. And the dry weight of forage is rapidly decreased after the June 11th seeding. In the late-heading type, IT 195422 (Echinochloa frumentacea), the plant height and the number of culm per square meters are also decreased by late seeding relatively, and heading date is about 13 days earlier than late seeding. The dry weight of forage was rapidly decreased after the June 11th seeding. In both two types, the nutritive value of ADF, NDF, and TDN are not changed by late seeding, but crude protein is increased by late seeding. The TDN yields of late-heading type, IT 195400, show average amounts in the June 1st seeding, but the TDN yield of early-heading type, IT 170606, indicate safety amounts of dry weight to the March 21st seeding. And these data are available for cropping systems, cultivating barnyard millet in summer and cereals for forage in winter, to get high production of forage in Korea.

Viral diseases, especially Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) have been most serious in barley fields. In this study, we investigated the effect of different level of resistance to viral diseases on the plant growth and yield in malting barley. In diagnosis of virus infection, BaYMV and BaMMV were detected in 'Doosan 29' (susceptible), however, 'Jinyangbori' (moderate susceptible) and 'Hopumbori' (moderate) was infected by only BaYMV. Plant height was restrained about 8~29% in overwintered plant regeneration stage depending on the resistant of each cultivar. The culm length damaged also to 9~12% by BaYMV infection. The tiller numbers reduced to 10~14% in overwintering season, however, the head numbers in harvest season more decreased to 26~33%. Heading date was delayed to 3~3 days by the infection. In examination of yield components, 1,000 kernel weight and $\ell$ weight reduced according to culrivar's resistant degrees to 4.0~6.4% and 1.0~4.2%, respectively. The yield of abortive grain was doubled in BaYMV infection comparing to non-infested field. Three varieties tested in the non-infected field over two years were not significantly different for yield potential with ranges of 509kg~632kg/10a. However, significant yield reduction was observed in 'Saessalbori' and 'Baegdong' with ranges of 77~177kg/10a as compared to 'Hopumbori' (467 kg/10a) when tested in the virus-infected field. Yield potentials of these cultivars reduced by 26~43%, respectively, in the virus-infected field as compared to those in the non-infected field.

This field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of shading degrees (0 : full sunlight, 25, 50 and 75%) on the early growth characteristics and winter survival of grasses. For the test different artificial shading houses were established and pasture species used were orchardgrass, timothy and perennial ryegrass. The experiment was performed at Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon, and sowing date was Aug. 25, 1984. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Generally, root length, new root length, number of new root and tillers of grasses were increased at 0% (full sunlight) of shading, followed by 25, 50 and 75% of shading degrees, in that order. Plant length and leaf elongation, however were increased at 50% of shading, followed by 75, 25 and 0%. 2. The percentage of winter killing of grasses was significantly (P<0.05) increased as the shading degrees increased. Also the percentages of winter killing were 10.1% in orchardgrass, 9.5% in timothy and 14.2% in perennial ryegrass, respectively. 3. A significant negative correlations were observed in the relationship between winter killing and tillers, new root length and number of new root of grasses. However, there were positive correlations between winter killing and plant length or leaf elongation under shading conditions. 4. As the shading degrees are increased by 0, 25, 50 and 75%, the NAR of grasses was tended to be decrease to 10.98, 11.52, 9.81 and 6.12 g/$m^2$/day, in that order. Also there was a negative correlation (r=-0.5943*) between winter killing and NAR of grasses, and NAR of orchardgrass, timothy and perennial ryegrass were 8.58, 8.53 and 11.71 g/$m^2$/day, respectively.

'Okhan' (Avena sativa L.), an oat cultivar for winter use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2011. It was derived from an original cross between 'Early80', exhibiting early heading, and 'Maine PI-590' (CI 7518), exhibiting large-size grain, in 1995. Subsequent generations as well as cross-bred cultivars were handled in bulk, and pedigree selection programs took place at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A promising line, 'SO95027-B-45-16-10-6-2-Y7-10', was selected in 2004, and was designated 'Gwiri74' after being selected from a yield trial for three years from 2005 to 2008. The breeding line 'Gwiri74' was subsequently evaluated for earliness of heading and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2009 to 2011, and was finally named as 'Okhan'. Over 3 years, the heading date of 'Okhan' was about 6 days earlier than that of the check cultivar 'Samhan', and their average forage dry matter yield harvested at the milk-ripe stage was 15.0 ton $ha^{-1}$, compared with 14.1 ton $ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar. Cultivar 'Okhan' was lower than the check cultivar 'Samhan' in terms of the protein content (9.2% and 9.9%, respectively) and total digestible nutrients (58.5%, and 59.3%, respectively), while the TDN yield per ha was more than the check (8.70 and 8.36 kg, respectively). Fall sowing cropping of 'Okhan' is recommended only in areas where average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are higher than $-7^{\circ}C$, and it should not be cultivated in mountain areas, where frost damage is likely to occur.

'Joseong', a winter forage triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2010. The cultivar 'Joseong' was selected from the cross FAHAD_5/RHINO1R.1D 5+10 5D'5B'//FAHAD_5 by CIMMYT (Mexico) in 1992. Subsequent generations were handled in pedigree selection program at Mexico from 1993 to 1998, and a line 'CTSS92Y-A-4Y-0M-5Y-0B' was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics. After preliminary and advance yield test in Korea for 2 years, the line designated as a line name of 'Iksan26'. The 'Iksan26' was subsequently evaluated for earliness and forage yield in 7 different locations such as Jeju, Iksan, Cheongwon, Yesan, Naju, Daegu, and Jinju from 2008 to 2010 and finally named as 'Joseong'. The cultivar 'Joseong' has characteristics of dark green leaf, yellow culm and spike, and large grain of yellowish brown color. The heading date of cultivar 'Joseong' was April 24, which was 5 days earlier than that of check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. It showed better tolerance or resistance to lodging, wet injury, powdery mildew, and leaf rust than those of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. The average forage dry matter yield of cultivar 'Joseong' at milk-ripe stage was 14.5 MT $ha^{-1}$, which was lower than 16.5 MT $ha^{-1}$ of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. The silage quality of 'Joseong' (5.3%) was lower to the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (6.0%) in crude protein content, while was 2.1% superior to the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (61.9%) in TDN (total digestible nutrients). It showed 5.1 MT $ha^{-1}$ of grain yield, which was 40% higher than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (3.65 MT $ha^{-1}$). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing crop in the area where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than $-10^{\circ}C$ in January, and as a winter crop using whole crop forage before planting rice in around Korea.
This study investigated the packaging status and sensory quality of fresh-cut mushroom products from retail markets. Fifty one fresh-cut mushroom products were surveyed / purchased from discount stores in four cities in January (winter), March (spring), August (summer), and October (autumn) 2009. Collected fresh-cut mushrooms include single variety products like whole oyster mushroom and winter mushroom, diced or sliced oak mushroom, sliced king oyster mushroom, and ready-to-cook mixed mushroom products. Most fresh-cut mushrooms were packed in trays made of aluminum, polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), nylon materials covered with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) wrap or solid PP (polypropylene) and PS. Eighty nine percent of the covers were labeled with manufacture and expiration date. Collected samples showed severe browning (10%) and off-flavor (4%). The percentage of products with a rating of 'good' or better in overall quality was 90%. Moreover, Survey showed seasonal differences in sensory qualities. All of the collected fresh-cut mushrooms in autumn and winter had high marketability. However, Mushroom products collected in spring and summer had lower quality, hence requires treatment to prevent browning and off-flavor.
This research was done to identify the mass propagation method in winter daphne (Daphne odora Thunb) using its softwood cuttings and to investigate its plant characters established at different light and soil conditions as an indoor plant. Cuttings from winter daphne were taken and grown in different treatment consisted of rooting media (perlite, vermiculite, perlite + vermiculite (1 : 1) and commercial horticulture media soil), indole butyric acid (IBA) hormone concentrations (0, 100, 500, 1000 ppm and Rootone) and date of cutting. Transplants were grown at different light intensities (100, 1000, 2500 lux and control) and growing media. Results showed that cuttings grown in perlite + vermiculite (1 : 1) gave higher percentage (100%) rooting. Cuttings treated with Rootone and IBA 100 ppm showed good rooting growth and cutting taken in June, 25 gave the highest rooting (96.7%). The best plant growth obtained at 1000 lux (56~60 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) followed by 2500 lux (125~130 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and scoria mixed with commercial horticulture media soil showed better growth of transplants.

'Gwangyoung', a winter forage triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), was developed at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2018. The cultivar 'Gwangyoung' has leaves of wide width, medium length, and green color, and spikes of medium length and yellowish-brown color, and a large grain of yellowish-brown color. The heading date of the cultivar 'Gwangyoung' was April 22 which was similar to check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. Its tolerance or resistance to cold, lodging, wet injury powdery mildew, and leaf rust were also similar to those of the check cultivar. The leaf blade ratio of 'Gwangyoung' (27.5%) was higher than that of 'Shinyoung' (21.2%). The average forage fresh and dry matter yield of cultivar 'Gwangyoung' at milk-ripe stages were 50.0 and 17.6 MT ha-1, respectively, which were higher than those (47.7 and 17.1 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The silage quality of 'Gwangyoung' was lower than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' in crude protein content (5.3%) and total digestible nutrients (61.3%), while was higher than the check cultivar in neutral detergent fiber (58.2%) and acid detergent fiber (34.9%). 'Gwangyoung' showed the silage of 1 grade and a grain yield of 6.03 MT ha-1.
