Estimation on the Radius of Maximum Wind Speed using RSMC Best Track Data (RSMC 최적경로 자료를 이용한 태풍의 최대풍속반경 산정)

  • Typhoon simulation method is widely used to estimate sea surface wind speeds during the typhoon periods. Holland (1980) model has been regarded to provide relatively better results for observed wind data. JTWC or RSMC best track data are available for typhoon modeling, but these data show slightly different because the data generation process are different. In this paper, a Newton-Raphson method is used to solve the two nonlinear equations based on the Holland model that is formed by the two typhoon parameters, i.e. the longest radius of 25 m/s and 15 m/s wind speeds, respectively. The solution is the radius of maximum wind speed which is of importance for typhoon modeling. This method is based on the typhoon wind profile of JMA and it shows that Holland model appears to fit better the characteristics of typhoons on the temporal and spatial changes than that of the other models. In case of using RSMC best track data, the method suggested in this study shows better and more reasonable results for the estimation of radius of maximum wind speed because the consistency of the input data is assured.

  • A series of wind tunnel tests was conducted to investigate the existence of the galloping instability of inclined dry cables and also to Identify the influence of some parameters on it. These parameters are the structural damping and cable surface roughness, which may have significant impact on the vibration characteristics. The test results showed both the divergent type of galloping instability and the limited amplitude high wind speed vortex shedding excitation. Galloping instability was observed in only one case. Parametric study shows that the vortex shedding oscillation can be easily suppressed with an increase of structural damping. It was also shown that the instability criterion indicated by earlier research was too conservative compared to the results obtained from the present study.

On Study on Chatacteristics of Nocturnal Meteorological Parameter at Mountain Slope (연구노트 산사면에서의 야간 기상요소의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A series of meterological observation using automation weather station(AWS) carried out to investigate characteristics of nocturnal meteorological parameters for 16~17 June 1998 at Buljeongdong mountain slope, Kyungbuk. Dry temperature at valley was lower than mountain because of high lapse rate at valley, so the strong inversion layer occurrenced at mountain slope for nighttime. Contrary of dry temperature, relative humidity of valley was higher than mountain for nighttime. Wind speed at valley from sunset to next day morning was lower than mountain, but that of valley after sunrise was higher than mountain. Wind direction at valley for all observation time were southeasterlies(SE), that of mountain for nighttime were northeasterlies(NE) or northnorthwesterlies(NNW), and that of mountain after sunrise were irregular. Vapor pressure at valley for all observation time was higher mountain, particularly the difference was high for nighttime.

Design and testing of a low subsonic wind tunnel gust generator

  • This paper summarises the design of a gust generator and the comparison between high fidelity numerical results and experimental results. The gust generator has been designed for a low subsonic wind tunnel in order to perform gust response experiments on wings and assess load alleviation. Special attention has been given to the different design parameters that influence the shape of the gust velocity profile by means of CFD simulations. Design parameters include frequency of actuation, flow speed, maximum deflection, chord length and gust vane spacing. The numerical results are compared to experimental results obtained using a hot-wire anemometer and flow visualisation by means of a tuft and smoke. The first assessment of the performance of the gust generator showed proper operation of the gust generator across the entire range of interest.

Development of a Time-Domain Simulation Tool for Offshore Wind Farms

  • A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.

Wind characteristics in the high-altitude difference at bridge site by wind tunnel tests

  • With the development of economy and construction technology, more and more bridges are built in complex mountainous areas. Accurate assessment of wind parameters is important in bridge construction at complex terrain. In order to investigate the wind characteristics in the high-altitude difference area, a complex mountain terrain model with the scale of 1:2000 was built. By using the method of wind tunnel tests, the study of wind characteristics including mean wind characteristics and turbulence characteristics was carried out. The results show: The wind direction is affected significant by the topography, the dominant wind direction is usually parallel to the river. Due to the sheltering effect of the mountain near the bridge, the wind speed and wind attack angle along the bridge are both uneven which is different from that at flat terrain. In addition, different from flat terrain, the wind attack angle is mostly negative. The wind profiles obey exponential law and logarithmic law. And the fitting coefficient is consistent with the code which means that it is feasible to use the method of wind tunnel test to simulate complex terrain. As for turbulence characteristics, the turbulence intensity is also related to the topography. Increases sheltering effect of mountain increases the degree of breaking up the large-scale vortices, thereby increasing the turbulence intensity. Also, the value of turbulence intensity ratio is different from the recommended values in the code. The conclusions of this study can provide basis for further wind resistance design of the bridge.

  • Weather forecasting is considered to be of utmost important among various important sectors such as flood management and hydro-electricity generation. Although there are various numerical methods for weather forecasting but majority of them are reported to be Mechanistic computationally demanding due to their complexities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and build models for accurately predicting the weather conditions which are faster as well as efficient in comparison to the prevalent meteorological models. The study has been undertaken to forecast various atmospheric parameters in the city of Bangalore using Naïve Bayes algorithms. The individual parameters analyzed in the study consisted of wind speed (WS), wind direction (WD), relative humidity (RH), solar radiation (SR), black carbon (BC), radiative forcing (RF), air temperature (AT), bar pressure (BP), PM10 and PM2.5 of the Bangalore city collected from Air Quality Monitoring Station for a period of 5 years from January 2015 to May 2019. The study concluded that Naive Bayes is an easy and efficient classifier that is centered on Bayes theorem, is quite efficient in forecasting the various air pollution parameters of the city of Bangalore.

An Analysis on Characteristics of Turbulence Energy Dissipation Rate from Comparison of Wind Profiler and Rawinsonde (연직바람관측장비와 레윈존데의 비교를 통한 난류 에너지 감소률의 특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to optimize the parameters related to consensus coherency within the PCL 1300, the operating program of wind profiler, from a validation of wind data between rawinsonde and wind profiler at Chupungryeong ($36^{\circ}13^{\prime}$, $127^{\circ}59^{\prime}$) site in Korea. It is then to analyze the diurnal and seasonal characteristics of the turbulence energy dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) in clear and rainy days from March 2009 to February 2010. In comparison of the wind data between wind profiler and rawinsonde during April 22-23, 2010, it was shown in a big error more than $10ms^{-1}$ over the height of 3,000 meters in the zonal (u) and meridional (v) wind components. When removing more than $10ms^{-1}$ in each wind speed difference of u an v components between the two instruments, the correlation coefficients of these wind components were 0.92 and 0.88, respectively, and the root mean square errors were 3.07 and $1.06ms^{-1}$. Based on these results, when the data processing time and the minimum available data within the PCL 1300 program were adjusted as 30 minutes and 60%, respectively, the bias errors were small. In addition, as a result of an analysis of sensitivity to consensus coherency of u and v components within the PCL1300 program, u components were underestimated in radial coherency, instantaneous and winbarbs coherency, whereas v components were overestimated. Finally by optimizing parameters of the PCL1300 program, the diurnal and seasonal means of ${\varepsilon}$ at each height were higher in rainy days than those in clear days because of increasing in the vertical wind speed due to upward and downward motions. The mean ${\varepsilon}$ for clear and rainy days in winter was lower than those of other seasons, due to stronger horizontal wind speed in winter than those in other seasons. Consequently, when the turbulence energy dissipation rates in the vertical wind speed of more than ${\pm}10cm\;s^{-1}$ were excluded for clear and rainy days, the mean ${\varepsilon}$ in rainy days was 6-7 times higher than that in clear days, but when considering them, it was 4-5 times higher.

Relationship between Meteorological Elements and Aerosols Number Concentration at Gosan, Jeju for $2001{\sim}2003$ (제주 고산 지역의 에어러솔 수농도 변동과 기상요소와의 상관성 연구 : 2001-2003)

  • With the aim to develop the monitoring technology on background atmosphere and climate change over Korean Peninsula, observations and studies on chemical, physical and optical properties of the atmospheric aerosols are made. Aerosol number concentration are measured with Optical Particle Counter from 2001 to 2003 at Gosan for 8 size intervals from 0.3 to $25{\mu}m$ diameter range. For the seasonal variation, the number concentration of coarse particles in spring at Gosan was higher than other seasons due to the influence of sand storm in spring. There is no significant correlations between fine particles ($0.3{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$) and meteorological parameters, such as relative humidity, wind speed and visual range, while the correlation between the number concentration of small particles ($0.5{\sim}2.23{\mu}m$) and relative humidity showed a positive value. This trend was inversed for the case of wind speed: aerosol number concentration showed a small decreasing tendency with increasing wind speed for small particles but the high wind speed in winter season increased coarse particle concentration. Finally, Particles most efficient in light extinction were found to be at the size of about $0.5{\sim}1{\mu}m$.

CLASSIFICATION OF THE INTERPLANETARY SHOCKS BY SHOCK DRIVERS

  • From the data of solar wind observation by ACE spacecraft orbiting the Earth-Sun Lagrangian point, we selected 48 forward interplanetary shocks(IPSs) occurred in 2000, maximum solar activity period. Examining the profiles of solar wind parameters, the IPSs are classified by their shock drivers. The significant shock drivers are the interplanetary coronal mass ejection(ICME) and the high speed stream(HSS). The IPSs driven by the ICMEs are classified into shocks driven by magnetic clouds and by ejectas based on the existence of magnetic flux rope structure and magnetic field strength. Some IPSs could be formed as the blast wave by the smaller energy and shorter duration of shock drivers such as type II radio burst. Out of selected 48 forward IPSs, $56.2\%$ of the IPSs are driven by ICME, $16.7\%$ by HSS, and $16.7\%$ of the shocks are classified into blast-wave type shocks. However, the shock drivers of remaining $10\%$ of the IPSs are unidentified. The classification of the IPSs by their driver is a first step toward investigating the critical magnitudes of the IPS drivers commencing the magnetic storms in each class.
