We have investigated the variations of sporadic E (Es) layer using the measurements of digisondes at Icheon ($37.14^{\circ}N$, $127.54^{\circ}E$, IC) and Jeju ($33.4^{\circ}N$, $126.30^{\circ}E$, JJ) in 2011-2018. The Es occurrence rate and its critical frequency (foEs) have peak values in summer at both IC and JJ in consistent with their known seasonal variations at mid-latitudes. The virtual height of the Es layer (h'Es) during equinox months is greater than that in other months. It may be related to the similar variation of meteor peak heights. The h'Es shows the semidiurnal variations with two peaks at early in the morning and late in the afternoon during equinoxes and summer. However, the semi-diurnal variation is not obvious in winter. The semi-diurnal variation is generally thought to be caused by the semi-diurnal tidal variation in the neutral wind shear, whose measurements, however, are rare and not available in the region of interest. To investigate the formation mechanism of Es, we have derived the vertical ion drift velocity using the Horizontal Wind Model (HWM) 14, International Geomagnetic Reference Field, and Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scatter Radar-00 models. Our results show that h'Es preferentially occur at the altitudes where the direction of the vertical ion velocity changes. This result indicates the significant role of ion convergence in the creation of Es.
This paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the development of turbulent flow fields in gun-type gas burner with a cone type baffle plate because this gas burner is generally composed of eight slits and swirl vanes. All of turbulent characteristics including mean velocities were measured in the horizontal plane and cross section by using X-type hot-wire probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate 450 l/min in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. Slits cause the fast jets, and then they have the characteristic that the flow is not adequately spread to radial direction and has long flow length and very small flow velocity distribution in the central part. On the contrary, swirl vanes does not have long enough for adequate flow length to downstream because the rotational flow diffuses remarkably to radial direction. However, the suitable arrangement between slits and swirl vanes causes effective flow width and flow length, and then it promotes fast flow mixing over the entire region including central part to increase turbulence more largely and effectively. Therefore, it is thought as a very desirable design method in gun-type gas burner to locate slits on the outside of swirl vanes.
Using a level set method and topological derivatives, a topological shape optimization method that is independent of an initial design is developed for linearly elastic structures. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set function, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. The 'Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J)' equation and computationally robust numerical technique of 'up-wind scheme' lead the initial implicit boundary to an optimal one according to the normal velocity field while minimizing the objective function of compliance and satisfying the constraint of allowable volume. Based on the asymptotic regularization concept, the topological derivative is considered as the limit of shape derivative as the radius of hole approaches to zero. The required velocity field to update the H -J equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. It turns out that the initial holes is not required to get the optimal result since the developed method can create holes whenever and wherever necessary using indicators obtained from the topological derivatives. It is demonstrated that the proper choice of control parameters for nucleation is crucial for efficient optimization process.
For decades, airships have being developed in Europe (especially German) and America. Airships are planning to be used for advertisements and airliners as well. In Korea, KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) is developing stratospheric communication airship and the similar research is carried out in Japan. Among them, Zeppelin of German has the cutting-edge airship technology with Zeppelin NT. In this paper, the flight performance and stability were evaluated by comparing mathematical theory and the real test. The stability was examined through dynamic modeling and assured by designing controllers at each flight mode. Elevator angle, rudder angle, magnitude of thrust and tilting angle of thrust vector were used as control inputs. Moreover, after measuring the airship velocity, flight direction, magnitude and direction of the wind, attitude angles and trajectories of the airship at each flight mode, the results were compared with the simulation. To get the reasonable data, low-pass filter and band-stop filter were designed to get rid of the sensor noise and engine vibration. The test was accomplished at cruise mode, turning mode, and deceleration. To conclude, with comparing the simulation data and flight test data, it could be known that the dynamic model used in this paper was reasonable.
In this study, we introduced image processing technic to measure shape variations of general bodies and applied it to the flexible yacht sail. Shape measurements of simple bodies sails were carried out and results showed that technic can be a reliable method to measure shape variations of the flexible yacht sail. The sail shape variation of 30ft sloop type yacht sail is measured on different sailing conditions. As velocity and direction of wind are increased, trailing edges in the upper part of the sail become more open than the lower part of the sail which are not changed. So it is confirmed that the shape measurement of a sail shape depending on a sailing condition is possible to use image processing scheme.
The autopilot system targets decreasing labor, working environment, service safety security and elevation of service efficiency. Ultimate purpose is minimizing number of crew for guarantee economical efficiency of shipping service. Recently, being achieving research about Course Keeping Control, Track Keeping Control, Roll-Rudder Stabilization, Dynamic ship Positioning and Automatic Mooring Control etc. which compensate nonlinear characteristic using optimizing control technique. And application research is progressing using real ship on actual field. Relation of Rudder angle which adjusted by Steering Machine and ship-heading angle are non-linear. And, Load Condition of ship acts as non-linear element that influence to Parameter of ship. Also, because the speed of a current and direction of waves, velocity and quantity of wind etc. that id disturbance act in non-linear form, become factor who make service of shipping painfully. Therefore, service system of shipping requires robust control algorithm that can overcome nonlinearity. In this paper, Using GA algorithm, design autopilot system of ship that could overcome the non-linear factor of ship and disturbance and examined result through simulation.
A cascade wind tunnel test for a turbine nozzle, which was designed for a small turbo jet engine in a previous study, has been conducted to evaluate its aerodynamic performance and losses. The large-scale blades were based on the mid-span profile of the nozzle. Oil film flow structure, and then 3-dimensional velocity components were measured in the flow passage with a 5-hold pressure probe, in addition to turbulent intensities at mid-span of cascade exit using a hot-wire anemometer. From this study, 3-dimensional growth of horseshoe and passage vortices in the downstream direction was clearly understood with near-wall flow phenomena. In addition, secondary flow and losses associated with the blade configuration were obtained in detail.
The cold water mass around the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula is analyzed by using CSK data from 1966 through 1970. It is shown that this water mass flows down from the region offshore of Jukbyun to the area of Youngil Bay along the 100meter contour line of bottom topography. In ordinary summer conditions when the current velocity in the Korea Strait is usually above about 50cm/sec and the wind direction is southwest, the cold water ascends to the surface and makes the surface temperature gradient large, unless disturbed by a tropical cyclon. The bottom water of the Korea Strait is formed by the stratification after the Tsushima intermediate water and the Japan Sea intermediate water have been mixed. In winter the Tsushima intermediate water with high salinity sinks rapidly around the inlet of the Japan Sea and prevents the Japan Sea intemediate water from entering the Korea Strait.
The vortical flows over sharp-edged delta wings with and without a leading edge extension have been investigated using a computational method. Three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved to provide an understanding of the effects of the angle of attack and the angle of yaw on the development and interaction of vortices and the aerodynamic characteristics of the delta wing at a freestream velocity of 20 m/s. The present computations provide qualitatively reasonable predictions of vortical flow characteristics, compared with past wind tunnel measurements. In the presence of a leading edge extension, a significant change in the suction pressure peak in the chordwise direction is much reduced at a given angle of attack. The leading edge extension can also stabilize the wing vortex on the windward side at angles of yaw, which dominates the vortical flows over yawed delta wings.
