  • The present work develops a method of evaluating thrust deduction and wake for different loads of the propeller using the concerted application of the theoretical tools and experimental techniques. It also shows the applicability of the new method to the design of optimum hull form. Firstly, the problem of hull-propeller interaction was analyzed in terms of inviscid as well as viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake. The wavemaking resistance of a hull and propeller were mathematically represented by sources on the hull surface and sink on the propeller plane, respectively. The strength of sink was determined by utilizing the radial distributions of propeller load and nominal wake. The resistance increment due to a propeller and the axial perturbation flow induced by the hull in the propeller plane were calculated. Especially, the inviscid component of the thrust deduction was calculated by subtraction the wavemaking resistance of a bare hull, the wavemaking resistance of a free-running propeller and the augmentation of propeller resistance due to hull action from the wavemaking resistance of the hull with a propeller. The viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake were estimated as functions of propeller load which were established by the propeller load varying test after deduction the calculated inviscid components. Secondly, an analysis method of powering performance was developed based on the potential theory and the propeller load varying test. The hybrid method estimates the thrust deduction, wake and propeller open-water efficiency for different propeller load. This method can be utilized in the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation such as the added resistance due to hull surface roughness, the added resistance due to wind, etc. Finally, the hybrid method was applied to the optimum design of hull form. A series of afterbody shapes was obtained by systematically varying the waterplane and section shapes of a parent afterbody without changing the principal dimensions, block coefficient and prismatic coefficient. From the comparison of the predicted results such as wavemaking resistance, thrust deduction, wake and delivered power, an optimum hull form was obtained. The delivered power of the optimized hull form was reduced by 5.7% which was confirmed by model tests. Also the predicted delivered power by the hybrid method shows fairly good agreement with the test result. It is therefore considered that the new analysis method of powering performance can be utilized as a practical tool for the design of optimum hull form as for the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation in the preliminary design stage.

  • The temporal and diel changes of cyanobacterial cell density, species composition, and cyanobacterial toxins (microcystin-RR, -YR, -LR) were examined for the outflow water of Lake Suwa in Japan from May to October, 1998. The highest total cell densities of Microcystis were observed in July and September, when the dominant phytoplankton was Microcystis ichthyoblabe and M. viridis, respectively. Both the species composition and total cell density of Microcystis affected the variation of the concentration of three microcystin variants. Only microcystin-RR(MC-RR) and -LR (MC-LR) were detected in July when Microcystis ichthyoblabe dominated, while microcystin-RR, -YR (MC-YR) and -LR were detected in August and October when Microcystis viridis dominated. The microcystin concentration and the cell density of Microcystis in the outflow water showed diel variations; the ratio of maximum to minimum value was $3{\sim}20$ fold far microcystin concentration, and $5{\sim}31$ fold for cell density. The diel variations of toxin concentration as well as Microcystis cell density was closely related to the diel variation of wind. During the windy period, when higher speeds occurred in the afternoon hours than morning hours, both the cell density of Microcystis and microcystin concentration tended to increase in the morning and decrease in the afternoon. The results of this study suggest that controlling the timing of lake discharge at the floodgate or intake tower can be useful for water resource management with respect to decreasing cyanobacteria biomass within intake water.

  • The variations of monthly mean sea levels along the coast of Korea anre studied graphic and harmonic methods with the data from 9 tides stations and compared with the variations of atmospheric pressure and the changes in density of sea water measured near some of the stations. The monthly mean sea level generally rises in Summer to Autumn, and falls in Winter to Spring and its range is from 20 cm to 50 cm. The variation of monthly mean sea level is of annual type, having one maximum and one minimum. The semi-range of annual components is 10.5 cm at Pusan and increases to the north in the west coast, to 20.8 cm at Inchon. It's phase is, on the whole, similar for the entire coast with about 210 (middle of August), except at Inchon, 200 . The variation of monthly mean sea level is mainly isostatic, or caused by those of sea water density and atmospheric pressure. Especially, the steric effect is predominant on the south- east coast around Pusan. However, in shallow long bays and estuaries on the west coast, the river runoff effect as well as local wind effect is also considerable. Magnitudes of annual variations at each stations are not constant, but widely variable from year to year. On the east and south coast, especially at Ulneungdo and Pusan the variations are large, which seem to be connected with the shifting of main current axes or current patterns in the offing.

  • In this study, the stability analysis of a fishing vessel in a seaway was done. The stability analysis is an important item in the ship design, and so the ship registers of each nation constrain the ships to be followed the stability criterion. Stability variation, exciting forces due to wave and wind, and the broaching phenomena cause the capsizing of a ship. In this study, the stability analysis to study of the capsizing of a fishing vessel was performed. The relation between the speed of the ship and the wave length, that makes the encountering frequency vanish, was obtained. It was found that the encountering frequency tend to be zero when the wave whose length and direction are similar to those of ship. In this case, the possibility of dangerous situation becomes high. The calculated restoring arm becomes small when the ship is located near the wave crest. In general, the selected small fishing vessel is better than the large ship with respect to the stability, however the wave height becomes relatively high because of her small length Kim(l994) calculated the stability variation of the large cargo ship, the results of which showed the changes in stability great. But in the selected small fishing vessel in this study, the changes was small in comparison with the larger ship. This reason seems to be the shape of her midship section. In large cargo ships, the block coefficient is large, but that of the fishing vessel is relatively small and the small fishing vessel has chine, therefore the center of buoyancy moves much when the ship is inclined. It is desirable that the dynamic stability analysis for a fishing vessel, whose speed and direction are similar to those of waves, shall be done in the near future.

  • In order to understand the characteristics of surface ozone concentration and high $O_3$ concentration days, regional data from seven air quality monitoring stations which were operated by local governments were analyzed Regional characteristics of $O_3$ concentration were analyzed with the data of $O_3$ concentration and the characteristics of $O_3$ generation and weather conditions by the selection of the days in which the concentration was higher than 80 ppb. In the case of daily variation, the lowest $O_3$ concentration was shown in all regions from 7am to 8am and the highest around at 4 pm. The monthly variation of mean $O_3$ concentration and ${\Delta}O_3$ values revealed a reducing pattern in July and August following the peak in June, and again a gradual increasing trend in September and October. The result shows that the amount of ozone is dependent on photochemical reaction. The days of $O_3$ generated more than 80 ppb in the region of Gwangyang-bay were 544 days(1,760 hrs). The frequency of occurrence in the region revealed a strong pattern with the order of Samil-dong, Jinsang, and Gwangmu-dong stations in the Gwangyang region. However, Tein-dong, which is the nearest station to air pollution material generation source, showed the lowest frequency in the study area. Consequently, the meteorological parameters which can easily generate the high concentration of $O_3$ in the region of Gwangyang-bay are characterized as follows; atmospheric temperature which is higher than $19^{\circ}C$, relative humidity with the range of $60{\sim}85%$, the less average wind velocity than 5 m/s, cloud cover which is less than 5/10, and the more duration of sunshine than 8 hours.

  • Eupatilin, one of representative medical components of mugwort, can be efficiently extracted from the 'Gangwha Sajabalssuk'. The Eupatilin content may depend on environmental factors such as soil and regional climate in addition to a genetic factor and Gangwha region has a profitable environmental condition for the mugwort growth. In this study, the climatological characteristics of Gangwha was analyzed in order to find the environmental condition of mugwort containing high Eupatilin in term of atmospheric, oceanographic and land variables. The climate of Gangwha is characterized by the relatively low daily temperature and large diurnal variation with plenty of solar radiation, long sunshine duration and less cloudiness. According to our correlation analysis, the long sunshine duration and the large diurnal temperature variation are highly correlated with the Eupatilin contents. The result implies that Gangwha has the favorable conditions for the cultivation and the habitat of the high-Eupatilin concentrated mugwort. Because of the sea surrounding Gangwha Island with low salinity and moderate wind, the salt contained in sea breeze is relatively low compared to other regions. Furthermore, Gangwha has clean atmospheric environment compared to other regions because the concentrations of toxic gases harmful to crop growth such as nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$), sulfite gas ($SO_2$) and fine dust (PM-10) are lower in the air. The ozone ($O_3$) concentration is moderate and within the level of natural production. It is also found that moderately coarse texture or fine loamy soils known as good for water drainage and for the growth and cultivation of the 'Gangwha-mugwort' are distributed throughout the areas around mountainous districts in Gangwha, coinciding with those of mugwort habitat.

  • Here we evaluated the effect of using water retentive pavement or WRP made from fly ash as material for main street in a real city block. We coupled computational fluid dynamics and pavement transport (CFD-PT) model to examine energy balance in the building canopies and ground surface. Two cases of 24 h unsteady analysis were simulated: case 1 where asphalt was used as the pavement material of all ground surfaces and case 2 where WRP was used as main street material. We aim to (1) predict diurnal variation in air temperature, wind speed, ground surface temperature and water content; and (2) compare ground surface energy fluxes. Using the coupled CFD-PT model it was proven that WRP as pavement material for main street can cause a decrease in ground surface temperature. The most significant decrease occurred at 1200 JST when solar radiation was most intense, surface temperature decreased by $13.8^{\circ}C$. This surface temperature decrease also led to cooling of air temperature at 1.5 m above street surface. During this time, air temperature in case 2 decreased by $0.28^{\circ}C$. As the radiation weakens from 1600 JST to 2000 JST, evaporative cooling had also been minimal. Shadow effect, higher albedo and lower thermal conductivity of WRP also contributed to surface temperature decrease. The cooling of ground surface eventually led to air temperature decrease. The degree of air temperature decrease was proportional to the surface temperature decrease. In terms of energy balance, WRP caused a maximum increase in latent heat flux by up to $255W/m^2$ and a decrease in sensible heat flux by up to $465W/m^2$.

  • Introduction of intermittent electricity production systems like wind and solar power to electricity market together with the deregulation of electricity markets resulted in numerous start/stops, load variations and off-design operation of water turbines. Hydraulic turbines suffer from the varying loads exerted on their stationary and rotating parts during load variations since they are not designed for such operating conditions. Investigations on part load operation of single regulated turbines, i.e., Francis and propeller, proved the formation of a rotating vortex rope (RVR) in the draft tube. The RVR induces pressure pulsations in the axial and rotating directions called plunging and rotating modes, respectively. This results in oscillating forces with two different frequencies on the runner blades, bearings and other rotating parts of the turbine. This study investigates the effect of transient operations on the pressure fluctuations exerted on the runner and mechanism of the RVR formation/mitigation. Draft tube and runner blades of the Porjus U9 model, a Kaplan turbine, were equipped with pressure sensors for this purpose. The model was run in off-cam mode during different load variations. The results showed that the transients between the best efficiency point and the high load occurs in a smooth way. However, during transitions to the part load a RVR forms in the draft tube which induces high level of fluctuations with two frequencies on the runner; plunging and rotating mode. Formation of the RVR during the load rejections coincides with sudden pressure change on the runner while its mitigation occurs in a smooth way.

  • This study was carried out to find the characteristics of surface ozone concentration data obtained during 1988-1991 by the Korea Ministry of Environment. Seasonal data (spring, summer, autumn and winter) wre obtained in May, August, November and February respectively at Kwanghwamun in Seoul. The pollutants analyzed in this study are $SO_2, TSP, CO, NO, NO_2 and NO_2/NO$. Atmospheric factors such as solar radiation, wind speed, relative humidity, cloud amount and atmospheric temperature are also analyzed. The influence of pollutants and atmospheric factors that affect ozone concentration were analyzed by statistical method. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The ozone concentration varied seasonally. The maximum values were 23 ppb in spring, 33 ppb in summer, 16 ppb in autumn and 13 ppb in winter. So the seasonal ozone value was highest in Summer. 2. Te diurnal concentration of ozone was highest during 2-4 P. M. and was very low in the morning and evening. 3. The maximal correlation coefficients of each season between ozone concentration and the influencing pollutants or atmospheric factors asr as follows ; a. spring, r = 0.44(solar radiation) b. summer, r = -0.59(relative humidity) c. autumn, r = -0.55(relative humidity) d. winter, r = -0.58($NO_2$) 4. The major factor affecting the ozone concentration in spring was solar radiation, Relative humidity was the first affecting factor in summer, autumn and $NO_2$ concentration was dominant in winter.

  • The purpose of this study is to find sedimentation patterns variation before and after the Saemangeum reclamation. Water circulations before and after the Saemangeum reclamation are calculated diagnostically and prognostically from the water temperature, salinity data, wind data and tidal residual current. Three dimensional movements of injected particles due to currents, turbulence and sinking velocity are tracked by the Euler-lagrange method. The dispersion range of soil grain for one and three day after releasing in the Geum river indicates that the soil grain was sedimented coastal area of Janghang and outer harbor of Kunsan. The soil grain moves a quite distance from the release point when size of soil grain is a small. These results indicate that size of soil grain and residual current is greatly influenced on the dispersion range of soil grain.
