Wind turbine frame will be required to be longer, lighter, more reliable and more consistent. Therefore it is necessary to lose weight of the wind turbine hub. Light-weight Design of a wind turbine is required to be at least 20 years. Therefore, this paper investigates the development for wind turbine rotor hub using design of topology optimization. The model is a pitch regulated wind turbine with three rotor blades where the main frame is made of nodular iron. For optimization, calculating stresses based on displacements and based on these data to carry out a verification of static and fatigue strength carried out. For this verification, two kind of analysis is used. One is static analysis and the other is fatigue analysis. Then the rotor hub of wind turbine frame is optimized using topology method.
A numerically efficient superelement is proposed as a low degree of freedom model for dynamic analysis of rotating tapered beams. The element uses a combination of polynomials and trigonometric functions as shape functions in what is also called the Fourier-p approach. Only a single element is needed to obtain good modal frequency prediction with the analysis and assembly time being considerably less than for conventional elements. The superelement also allows an easy incorporation of polynomial variations of mass and stiffness properties typically used to model helicopter and wind turbine blades. Comparable results are obtained using one superelement with only 14 degrees of freedom compared to 50 conventional finite elements with cubic shape functions with a total of 100 degrees of freedom for a rotating cantilever beam. Excellent agreement is also shown with results from the published literature for uniform and tapered beams with cantilever and hinged boundary conditions. The element developed in this work can be used to model rotating beam substructures as a part of complete finite element model of helicopters and wind turbines.
This paper presents the structural model development and verification processes of wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available is used for the study. The wind turbine assembled by blades, rotor, nacelle and tower. The wind blade connected to rotor. To make the whole turbine structural model, the mass and stiffness properties of all parts should be clear and given. However the wind blade, hub, nacelle, rotor and power generating machinery parts have difficulties to define the material properties because of the composite and assembling nature of that. Nowadays to increase the power generating coefficient and cost efficiency, the highly accurate aerodynamic loading evaluating technique should be developed. The Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the emerging new way to evaluate the aerodynamic force on the rotating wind blade. To perform the FSI analysis, the fluid and structural model which are sharing the associated interface topology have to be provided. In this paper, the structural model of blade development and verifying processes have been explained for Part1. In following Part2 paper, the processes of whole turbine system will be discussing.
In this study, computer applied engineering (CAE) techniques are fully used to conduct structural and dynamic analyses of a whole huge wind turbine system including composite blades, tower and nacelle. For this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to predict aerodynamic loads of the rotating wind-turbine blade model. Multi-body dynamic structural analyses are conducted based on the non-linear finite element method (FEM) by using super-element method for composite laminates blade. Three-dimensional finite element model of a wind turbine system is constructed including power train(main shaft, gear box, coupling, generator), bedplate and tower. The results for multi-body dynamic simulations on the wind turbine's critical operating conditions are presented in detail.
This paper presents a design of vertical axis Darrieus wind turbine for wind-power generating system. The wind turbine consists of two troposkien blades, diameter is 10m approximately, and chord length 380mm, tip ratio speed 4. The design of turbine is laid for the main data of rated wind speed 10m/s, turbine speed 78rpm, the generating power is estimated to 25kW, and this is contorted to commercial power line by means of three phase synchronous generator-inverter system.
This paper deals with the design, wind tunnel testing, and performance analysis of small wind turbines targeting low-power applications. Three different small-size blade designs in terms of size, shape, and twisting angle are considered and tested. We conduct wind tunnel tests while measuring the angular speed of the rotating blades, the generated voltage, and the current under varying resistive loading and air flow conditions. An electromechanical model is also used to predict the measured voltage and power and verify their consistency and repeatability. The measurements are found in qualitative agreement with those reported in previously-published experimental works. We present a novel methodology to estimate the mechanical torque applied to the wind turbine without the deployment of a torque measuring device. This method can be used to determine the power coefficient at a given air speed, which constitutes an important performance indicator of wind turbines. The wind tunnel tests revealed the capability of the developed wind turbines to deliver more than 1225 mW when subject to an air flow with a speed of 7 m/s. The power coefficient is found ranging between 26% and 32%. This demonstrates the aerodynamic capability of the designed blades to extract power from the wind.
In the present study, we focus on the CFD simulations for the performance and the rotor-generated wake of a model-scale wind turbine which was designed for wave tank experiments. The CFD simulations with fully resolved rotor geometry are performed using MARIN's community-based open-source CFD code ReFRESCO. The absolute formulation method (AFM) is leveraged to model the rotating wind turbine. The k - ω SST turbulence model is adopted in the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. First, the thrust and torque coefficients, CT and CP, are calculated at different Tip Speed Ratios (TSR), and the results are compared against the experimental data and previous numerical results. The pressure distribution of the turbine blades at the 70% span is obtained and compared to the results obtained by other tools. Then, a verification study aiming at quantifying the discretization uncertainty of the turbine performance with respect to the grid resolution in the wake region is performed. Last, the rotor-generated wake at the TSR of 7 is presented and discussed.
Control of pitch angle of turbine blades is among the controlling methods in the wind turbines; this measure is taken for managing mechanical power generated by wind turbine in different wind velocities. Taking into account the high significance of the power generated by wind turbine and due to the fact that better performance of pitch angle is followed by better quality of turbine-generated power, it is therefore crucially important to optimize the performance of this controller. In the current paper, a PI controller is primarily used to control the pitch angle, and then another controller is designed and replaces PI controller through applying a new strategy i.e. alternating two ADALINE neural networks. According to simulation results, performance of controlling system improves in terms of response speed, response ripple, and ultimately, steady tracing error. The highly significant feature of the proposed intelligent controller is the considerable stability against variations of wind velocity and system parameters.

In this paper a practical modelling methodology is presented for a series of aero- servo- elastic- coupled numerical analyses of small wind turbine operation, with particular emphasis on variable speed generator modelling in various wind speed conditions. The following characteristics are determined using the available computer tools: the tip speed ratio as a function of the generator constant (under the assumption of constant wind speed), the turbine coefficient of power as a function of the tip speed ratio (the torque curve is modified accordingly and generator speed and power curves are plotted), turbine power curves and coefficient of power curve as functions of the incoming wind speed. The last stage is to determine forces and torques acting on rotor blades and turbine tower for specific incoming wind speeds in order to examine the impact of the stall phenomena on these values (beyond the rated power of the turbine). It is shown that the obtained results demonstrate a valuable guideline for small wind turbines design process.
