This study examined the short-term variability of $CO_2$ concentrations measured at the Gosan site ($33^{\circ}17^{\prime}N$, $126^{\circ}10^{\prime}E$) in Jeju, Korea for the last 9 years from 2002 to 2010. The weekly distribution shows higher $CO_2$ concentrations during weekends than weekdays which implies the impact of local emissions because Jeju Island is one of the top tourist attraction in Korea. In diurnal variation, $CO_2$ concentration reached the maximum at 6 am and the minimum at 1 pm. The high $CO_2$ concentrations were mostly associated with lower wind speed (below 4 m/s) and easterlies, which was typical of summer night. In other seasons, however, the high concentrations were encountered under strong westerlies (8~16 m/s), which implies the influence of Chinese outflows. $CO_2$ concentrations were found to be highly correlated with meteorological parameters including wind speed, temperature, humidity, and solar radiation except for winter.

The effect of solar irradiance has been used to estimate daily maximum temperature, which make it possible to reduce the error inherent to lapse-rate based elevation difference correction in mountainous terrain. Still, recent observations indicated that the effect of solar radiation would need correction for estimation of daily maximum temperature. It was attempted to examine what would cause the variability of solar irradiance effect in determination of daily maximum temperature under natural field conditions and to suggest improved methods for estimation of the temperature distribution over mountainous regions. Temperature at 1500 and the wind speed for 1100 to 1500 were obtained at 10 validation sites with various topographical features including slope and aspect within a mountainous $50km^2$ catchment for 2012-2013. Lapse-rate corrected temperature estimates on clear days were compared with these observations, which would represent the differential irradiance effect among sloped surfaces. Results indicated a negative correlation between the mean wind speed and the estimation error. A simple scheme was derived from relationship between wind speed and estimation error for daily temperature to correct the effect of solar radiation. This scheme was incorporated into an existing model to estimate daily maximum temperature based on the effect of solar radiation. At 10 validation sites on clear days, estimates of 1500 LST temperature with and without the correction scheme were compared. It was found that a substantial improvement was achieved when the correction scheme was applied in terms of bias correction as well as error size reduction at all sites.

This study focused on variability of the sea water temperatures observed off the Dangjin Power Plant in the central west coast of Korea for the period of 1998-1999. Spatial averaged temperature shows the annual range of $20.3^{\circ}C$, with minimum of $3.3^{\circ}C$ in February and maximum of $23.6^{\circ}C$ in August. Horizontal distribution patterns are seasonally reversing: The temperatures are increasing toward inshore of the period of April to October, while they are increasing toward of offshore for the rest of year. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at M2 and S2 tidal periods, since the water movement in the study area is influenced by strong tide. The responses of temperature variations to tidal phase show different seasonal characteristics: The temperatures are increasing at flood phases in winter and ebb phases in summer. Amplitudes of the components at M2 and S2 periods are $0.8^{\circ}C\;and\;0.5^{\circ}C$, accounting for 70-80% of daily variation. Coherency analyses between non-tidal components of temperature and wind speed show that in summer, northerly wind components significantly coherent with temperature at 2.8 days period, while in winter, southerly wind component is coherent with 2.4 days period, with 0.6 and 0.7 day phase-lags, respectively.

The seasonal variability of the sea surface winds over the last Sea of Korea (Japan Sea) is investigated by means of empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The combined representation of fields of three climatic variables by empirical orthogonal functions is discussed. The eigenvectors are derived from daily sea level pressure, wind speed and 10-day mean sea surface temperature (SST) during 15 years $(1978\~1992)$. The spatial patterns of the mean pressure are characterized by the high pressure in the western part and the low pressure in the eastern part. The spatial distribution of the standard deviation (SD) of pressure are characterized by max SD of 6.6 mb near the Vladivostok, and minima along the coast of the Japan. In Vladivostok, the maxima of SD of SST and south-north wind (WV) were also occurred. The representation of fields of individual meteorological variables by EOF shows that the first mode of the west-east wind (WU) explain over $47.3\%$ of the variance and the second mode of WU represents $30\%$. Especially, the first mode of the WV explain $70.9\%$ of the variance and their time series coefficients show 1-cpy, 0.5-cpy frequency spectrum. The spatial distribution of the first mode eigenvectors of SST are characterized by maximum near Vladivostok. The combined representation of fields of several variables (pressure, wind, SST) reveals that the first mode magnitudes of the variance of the combined eigenvectors (WU-PR) are increased. By means of this result, the 1-year peak and the 6-months peak are remarkable. In the three combined patterns (wind, pressure, SST), the second mode of the eigenvector (wind) is affected by the SST. Their time coefficients of the first mode show noticeable 1-year peak. The spectral analysis of the second mode shows broad seasonal signal with the period of 4-months and a significant peak of variability at 3-month period.

It is undertaken systematization of results of satellite and ground observation parameters characterizing a current condition and climatic variability of two selected geographical areas. One of them covers territory of Azerbaijan and another covers a wide area of Caspian See region. Average values and mean square deviations of following values are investigated: outgoing long wave radiation during a day and night (in nebulosity and cloudless). absorbed within a day of the stream of a sunlight of the system in "a terrestrial surface-atmosphere". degree of a covering by clouds of the selected areas during a day and at night, ground temperature values of air. pressure and speed of a wind. Monthly average values of corresponding parameters create a basis of suggested investigations. It has been presented features of a time course of investigated parameters for each month and year in the whole due to the continuously observations since 1982-2000. The scientific problem consists that there are no existed models which authentically would be cover the main aspects of a realities specified changes: they are identified by economic activities. growth of the population and other features of development of a human society or internal fluctuations of biogeophysical/climatic system. Possibilities of predictability of biosphere and climate changes depend on available timely supervision. adequacy of construction of appropriate models. understanding of mechanisms of direct and feedback influences in such complicated systems.

This study is to evaluate the accuracy of the meteorological information provided for the aircraft operating at low altitude. At first, it is necessary to identify crucial elements of weather information closely related to flight safety during low altitude flights. The study conducted a survey of pilots of low altitude aircraft, divided into pre-flight and in-flight phases, and reached an opinion that wind direction, wind speed, cloud coverage and ceiling and visibility are important items. Related to these items, we compared and calculated the accuracy of TAFs and METARs from Taean Airfield, Seosan Airport and Gunsan Airport because of their high number of domestic low-altitude flights. Accuracy analysis evaluated the accuracy of two numerical variables, Mean Absolute Error(MAE) and Root Mean Square Error(RMSE), and the cloud coverage which is categorical variable was calculated and compared by accuracy. For numeric variables, one-way ANOVA, which is a parameter-test, was approached to identify differences between actual forecast values and observations based on absolute errors for each item derived from the results of MAE and RMSE accuracy analyses. To determine the satisfaction of both normality assumptions and equivalence variability assumptions, the Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to verify that they do not have a normality distribution for numerical variables, and for the non-parametric test, Kruscal-Wallis test was conducted to determine whether or not they are satisfied.

This study investigated temporal changes in forest physical variables and their effects on thermal comfort and physiological and psychological responses. Environmental factors (air temperature, mean radiant temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity), the predicted mean vote (PMV), and the predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD) visitors were continuously measured between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. We assessed the physiological and psychological responses (heart rate variability, heart rate, oral temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, thermal sensation vote, comfort sensation vote, and subjective feelings) of 30 male university students (average age: 21.7±1.9 years), who closed their eyes and relaxed for 5 minutes every hour. Examination of correlations between environmental factors and physiological responses showed that ① the mean radiant temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity significantly changed with time; ② PMV and PPD also showed significant changes over time, and the thermal sensation vote corresponded with PMV; however, the comfort sensation vote did not correspond with PPD; ③ Among the physiological responses, parasympathetic nerve activity, sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate, and diastolic blood pressure significantly varied with time, with parasympathetic nerve activity having the lowest value and sympathetic nerve activity the highest at the highest air temperature (2:00-4:00 PM); and ④ Air temperature, mean radiant temperature, and wind speed showed a negative correlation with parasympathetic nerve activity and a positive correlation with sympathetic nerve activity. These findings indicate that the relaxation effects of the forest environment depend on what time of day people are exposed to it, and the changes occurring in forest environmental factors over time modulate these effects.
Evaporation over the world is expected to increase owing to increase in temperature by global warming. However, pan evaporation around the world has decreased in the past few decades. This study, which has been conducted in 18 meteorological gauging stations in Korean peninsula, investigates the changes in pan evaporation and climate variables such as precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine hours, and percentage of sunshine, which can affect evaporation processes; the changes in these variables have been recorded between 1960 and 2007. At most gauging stations, pan evaporation shows statistically significant downward trends. The relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine hours, and percentage of sunshine also show downward trends. On the other hand, precipitation and temperature show upward trends. The spatial distribution of the downward trend in sunshine hours and percentage of sunshine correspond to that of the downward trend in pan evaporation. Scatter plots imply that pan evaporation has a strong positive correlation with the sunshine hours and percentage of sunshine, while it has a negative correlation with precipitation. At the Gangneung gauging station, the open water evaporation estimated using the Penman equation does not show the significant downward trend shown by pan evaporation. This result implies that pan evaporation is not a good indicator of potential or open water evaporations during the investigation of their long-term variability. Finally, this study explains the complementary relationship between pan and actual evaporations. Decreases in the pan evaporation can act as an evidence for the ever-increasing actual evaporation.
During the last decades, considerable efforts have been spent for climate studies, in particular to better understand changing climate. In turn, several significant trends in climatic variables have been reported. Explaining such trends is challenging - some of them have been considered contradictory to another. Various hypotheses have also been suggested for general description of changing climate. At this point in time, it would be beneficial to look back and carefully recollect our knowledge about climate change. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive review on our forefront knowledge in this context with focus on the trends in temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, evaporation, and precipitation. Major trends, namely warming, dimming, and stilling, are demonstrated together with evaporation paradox and increasing precipitation variability, using data at Seoul. On the basis of understanding these notions, we suggest four key implications to hydrologists and engineers.
Landfast sea ice (LFI) in Terra Nova Bay, East Antarctica where the Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station is located, has significant influences on marine ecosystem and the sailing of an icebreaker. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the spatio-temporal variation of the LFI in Terra Nova Bay. In this study, we chose interferometric pairs with the temporal baseline from 1 to 9 days out of a total of 62 COSMO-SkyMed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images over Terra Nova Bay obtained from December 2010 to January 2012, and then constructed the coherence image of each pair. The LFI showed coherence values higher than 0.3 even in the interferometric SAR (InSAR) pairs of up to 9-days of temporal baseline. This was because the LFI was fixed at coastline and thus showed low temporal phase decorrelation. Based on the characteristics of the coherence on LFI, We defined the areas of LFI that show spatially homogeneous coherence values higher than 0.5. Pack ice (PI) and open water showed low coherence values due to large temporal phase decorreation caused by current and wind. Distinguishing PI from open water in the coherence images was difficult due to their similarly low coherence values. PI was identified in SAR amplitude images by investigating cracks on the ice. The extents of the LFI and PI were estimated from the coherence and SAR amplitude images and their temporal variations were analyzed. The extent of the LFI increased from March to July (maximum extent of $170.7km^2$) and decreased from October. The extent of the PI increased from February to May and decreased from May to July when the LFI increases dramatically. The extent of the LFI and air temperature showed an inverse correlation with a time lag of about 2 months, i.e., the extent of the LFI decreases after 2 months of the increase in the air temperature. Meanwhile the correlation between wind speed and the extent of the LFI was very low. This represents that the extent of LFI in Terra Nova Bay are influenced more by the air temperature than wind speed.
