Wind Load Combinations Including Torsion for Rectangular Medium-rise Buildings

  • This paper presents the results of a set of wind tunnel tests carried out to examine wind-induced overall structural loads on rectangular medium-rise buildings. Emphasis was directed towards torsion and its correlation with peak shear forces in transverse and longitudinal directions. Two building models with the same horizontal dimensions but different gabled-roof angles ($0^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$) were tested at different full-scale equivalent eave heights (20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 m) in open terrain exposure for all wind directions (every $15^{\circ}C$). Wind-induced pressures were integrated over building surfaces and results were obtained for along-wind force, across-wind force, and torsional moment. Maximum wind force component was given along with the other simultaneously-observed wind force components normalized by the overall peak. The study found that for flat-roofed buildings maximum torsion for winds in transverse direction is associated with 80% of the overall shear force perpendicular to the longer horizontal building dimension; and 45% of the maximum shear occurs perpendicular to the smaller horizontal building dimension. Comparison of the wind tunnel results with current torsion provisions in the American wind standard, the Canadian and European wind codes demonstrate significant discrepancies. Suggested load combination factors were introduced aiming at an adequate evaluation of wind load effects on rectangular medium-rise buildings.

풍동 조건의 마이크로폰 어레이 측정에서 전단층 보정에 관한 연구 (Study on Shear Layer Correction of Microphone Array Measurement in the Wind Tunnel Test)

  • Microphone array beamforming method has been recognized as an important aeroacoustic research field and become a standard technique in localizing sound sources. This method also used in flight acoustic measurement, and especially, it is very useful when measure sounds inside the wind tunnel. In measuring sound which is inside the wind tunnel by traditional beamforming method, there are some errors caused by airstream. The speed and the propagation path of the sound changes as it travel through the airstream. This makes the error which the position of sound is changed a little bit to the down stream direction. In this paper, validation test has made about the correction equation for this wind effects of previous researches. And beamforming including shear layer correction was performed about a sound source in the anechoic open-jet wind tunnel.

Shear-lag behavior of prestressed concrete box-girder bridges during balanced cantilever construction

  • Balanced cantilever construction is extensively used in the construction of prestressed concrete (PSC) box-girder bridges. Shear-lag effect is usually considered in finished bridges, while the cumulative shear-lag effect in bridges during balanced cantilever construction is considered only rarely. In this paper, based on the balanced cantilever construction sequences of large-span PSC box-girder bridges, the difference method is employed to analyze the cumulative shear-lag effect of box girders with varying depth under the concrete segments' own weight. During cantilever construction, no negative shear-lag effect is generated, and the cumulative shear-lag effect under the balanced construction procedure is greater than the instantaneous shear-lag effect in which the full dead weight is applied to the entire cantilever. Three cross-sections of Jianjiang Bridge were chosen for the experimental observation of shear-lag effect, and the experimental results are in keeping with the theoretical results of cumulative shear-lag effect. The research indicates that only calculating the instantaneous shear-lag effect is not sufficiently safe for practical engineering purposes.

  • A various algorism has been studied to extract possibly every energy from a wind turbine in conjunction with the increase of concern about wind power system. In order to verify these control algorism, it is essential to make the most similar conditions to the real wind turbine's environment. Therefore, using separately excited DC motor a wind turbine the most similar to the real turbine is simulated. Tower shadow effect and Wind shear effect are considered as well as inertia emulation. For the control of Back-to-Back Converter Vector current control methods and space vector pulse width modulation are used and for reducing THD of grid current LCL filter is considered. This simulation results verified the energy produced by wind all flows into the utility under the consideration of the characteristics of a wind turbine. The result of this paper is expected to be used as a basic material for analyzing the characteristics of the wind turbine generator.

항공기 복행사례를 통한 제주국제공항 저층 윈드시어의 특징 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Low-Level Wind Shear at Jeju International Airport from Go-Around Flight Perspective)

  • Low level wind shear, which often occurs at Jeju International Airport, is a phenomenon that occurs when the topological location and topographical characteristics of Jeju Island are combined with weather characteristics. Low level wind shears, which are caused by rapid changes in wind direction and wind speed, pose a threat to aircraft safety and also cause abnormal situations, such as aircraft go-around, diversion, and cancellation. Many meteorological studies have been conducted on weather patterns, occurrence periods and frequency of low level wind shears. However, researches related to aircraft operations are limited where here we study the similarities and differences between strong southwest winds and bidirectional tailwind type low level wind shears based on aircraft go-around cases at Jeju International Airport. The results are expected to be used to enhance safety when operating to Jeju International Airport, which includes pilot training that reflects the characteristics generated by wind changes, pilot prior notification, providing pilots with latest trends, and increasing extra fuel.

  • As rotor blade of a wind turbine becomes larger to satisfy the economic efficiency for offshore wind farm, the numerical analysis considering wind profile is getting emphasized. In this paper, the study for the power characteristic of a wind turbine is carried out using NREL phase VI wind turbine applied wind profile. The experimental data of NASA Ames wind tunnel for inflow velocity 7m/s is used and the numerical result is obtained by using CFD commercial solver(FLUENT).

고해상도 KMAPP 자료를 활용한 제주국제공항에서 저층 윈드시어 예측 (Low-Level Wind Shear (LLWS) Forecasts at Jeju International Airport using the KMAPP)

  • Low-level wind shear (LLWS) events on glide path at Jeju International Airport (CJU) are evaluated using the Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) and Korea Meteorological Administration Post-Processing (KMAPP) with 100 m spatial resolution. LLWS that occurs in the complex terrains such as Mt. Halla on the Jeju Island affects directly aircraft approaching to and/or departing from the CJU. For this reason, accurate prediction of LLWS events is important in the CJU. Therefore, the use of high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)-based forecasts is necessary to cover and resolve these small-scale LLWS events. The LLWS forecasts based on the KMAPP along the glide paths heading to the CJU is developed and evaluated using the AMDAR observation data. The KMAPP-LLWS developed in this paper successfully detected the moderate-or-greater wind shear (strong than 5 knots per 100 feet) occurred on the glide paths at CJU. In particular, this wind shear prediction system showed better performance than conventional 1-D column-based wind shear forecast.

An Efficient Method to Obtain Wind Speed Gradient with Low PRF Radar

  • 풍속 및 바람 방향의 급격한 변화에 의한 기상위험 현상을 탐지하기 위해서는 공간상에서 풍속의 변화정도를 측정하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 이러한 기상현상들에서 전형적으로 내재된 높은 풍속의 측정을 위해서는 높은 PRF를 갖는 레이다를 필요로 한다. 그러나 공간상의 풍속의 변화정도를 예측하는데 있어서 이러한 큰 풍속의 절대적인 측정값이 꼭 필요한 것은 아니다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 실제적인 측면에서 매우 유용한 낮은 PRF를 갖는 레이다를 이용하여 풍속의 공간 변화율을 얻는 방법을 제안하였다.

도로표지판 지지구조물의 내풍성능 향상에 관한 연구 (A study on improvement of wind-resistance characteristics of the structure supporting road sign)

  • The structure supporting road sign is a road information facility for ensuring the safe transportation and smooth traffic. But, lots of road information facilities were damaged by the typhoon "Maemi" in 2003. Such damaged facilities should be rehabilitated and could increase economic loss by causing traffic accident. Therefore, in this study, behavior that reduce wind load and improve wind resistance of the structure supporting road sign are studied about wind load beyond design specification by abnormal climate as below. The first is wind load reducing technique such that shear key resist wind load that is not greater than design wind speed but in case that it is over the design wind limit, column member is rotated on the inner steel pipe axis by the brittle failure of shear key. The second is the technique such that fail-safe the overturning of road sign panel by equipment installation in the vertical member. The third is the technique of installing stiffening plate inside the vertical member to relieve stress concentration.

沿岸境界層에서의 表層風의 日變化 (Diurnal Variation of the Surface Wind in the Coastal Boundary Layer)

  • 5년간의 시간별 풍속 자료를 이용하여 연안 표층풍의 일변화가 분석되었다. 특히 내륙으로 부는 바람 (onshore flow)이 지배적인 계절에는 야간 최대풍의 최대 출현 빈도가 자정에 나타났다. 연평균 남풍 계열을 갖는 야간 최대풍은 북풍 계열 보다 약 3배이상의 출현을 보여준다. 중림의 대기 안정도가 연안에 지배적이므로 바람이 해양에서 내륙으로 불 경우는 (offshore flow) 상승된 전선역전층과 지표역전층에 의해 형성된 전단력(shear flow)이 연안경계층으로 전이되어 야간 연안 최대표층풍이 형성된다.
