  • In accordance with the policy of local government, the large scale of wind farms have been installed in Jeju power system. However, The intermittent characteristics of wind power output may cause grid voltage and frequency variation, especially in weak power system. One of the solution to solve this problem is installation of Energy storage system (ESS). In this case, the ESS will regulate the active power generated from wind farm to mitigate fluctuation. Actually, the local government of Jeju island constructed ESS connected to Hangwon wind turbine in 2016. From this point, this paper analyzes requirement capacity of ESS to mitigate wind power fluctuation based on measured data from Hangwon wind turbine and ESS. The simulation results will be carried out by Matlab program.

  • In recent years, the crisis of energy is growing seriously and also the contamination of ecology has been reverberated as international problem. The social concern about energy crisis has been growing for the last several years and also the interest in new and renewable energy has been increased. The probability of wind power resource over Saemangeum is reviewed with the data of Gunsan weather station. Through this study, it is cleared that the Saemangeum area has fluent wind power source to design the wind farm in Korea. According to calculation results, it is possible to predict the wind velocity density around the Saemangeum area using the shape factor as a parameter.

  • An optimal layout condition of the offshore wind turbines is studied by using the response surface analysis which is a kind of the design of experiments. Based on the assumption that total 36 turbines would be installed in the offshore wind farm, the number and distance of the rows and columns are used as the design variables and the efficiency decrease of power generation due to the wake decay by the interactions of turbines and the installation cost of the internal electric grid are considered as the objective functions of the response surface analysis for the layout design of turbines. Useful design information can be derived by analyzing the relationship between the design variables and target functions. It is found that the row number and the distance between rows should be minimized, and the optimal distance between columns should be estimated and adopted to the layout design within the specified design range in order to ensure the economics for the offshore wind farm.

  • Wind energy is rapidly becoming significant generating technologies in electricity markets. As probabilistic nature of wind energy creates many uncertainties in the short-term scheduling, additional actions for reliable market operation should be taken. This paper presents a novel approach to evaluate ramping capability requirement for changes in imbalance energy between day-ahead market and real-time market due to uncertainty of wind generation as well as system load. Dynamic ramp rate model has been applied for realistic solution in unit commitment problem, which is implemented in day-ahead market. Probabilistic optimal power flow has been used to verify ramping capability determined by the proposed method is reasonable in economic and reliable aspects. This approach was tested on six-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system with a wind farm. The results show that the proposed approach provides ramping capability information to meet both forecasted variability and desired confidence level of anticipated uncertainty.

  • Voltage stability is one of the most critical security issues which has not yet been well resolved to date. In this paper, an analytical method called PQ plane analysis with consideration of the reactive power capability of wind turbine generator and the wake effect of wind farm is proposed for voltage stability study. Two voltage stability indices based on the proposed PQ plane analysis method incorporating the uncertainties of load-increasing direction and wind generation are designed and implemented. Cases studies are conducted to investigate the impacts of wind power incorporation with different control modes. Simulation results demonstrate that the constant voltage control based on reactive power capability significantly enhances voltage stability in comparison of the conventional constant power factor control. Some meaningful conclusions are obtained.

  • The power production using hub height wind speed tends to be overestimated than actual power production. It is because the hub height wind speed cannot represent vertical wind shear and blade tip loss that aerodynamics characteristic on the wind turbine. The commercial CFD model WindSim is used to compare and analyze each power production. A classification of atmospheric stability is accomplished by Monin-Obukhov length. The concentric wind speed constantly represents low value than horizontal equivalent wind speed or hub height wind speed, and also relevant to power production. The difference between hub height wind speed and concentric equivalent wind speed is higher in nighttime than daytime. Under the strongly convective state, power production is lower than under the stable state, especially using the concentric equivalent wind speed. Using the concentric equivalent wind speed considering vertical wind shear and blade tip loss is well estimated to decide suitable area for constructing wind farm.

  • Through 'The Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan' for carbon neutrality, the government promised to raise the proportion of renewable energy generation to 20% and renewable energy installation capacity to 63.8% by 2030. Therefore, we plan to test a 5.5 MW offshore wind turbine near Maldo, Gunsan. In this project, we measure the level of public acceptance and perform ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis to show the determinants of public acceptance. The regression results are as followed. First, it is judged that the closer the distance to the offshore wind turbine, the more the economic effects considered by residents. Second, especially in Maldo, the experience of being discriminated from the Saemangeum project, is understood to have caused distrust in the surrounding fishing villages chief/Fisheries Cooperatives, converted into a local community effect. Finally, the policy implications are as follows. First, a bottom-up problem-solving method is required to improve public acceptance, based on the Living Lab. Second, the island community may be indifferent to the briefings or forums of outsiders. Therefore, a gradual approach is required through (in)formal channels based on reliability from a long-term perspective with nearby universities and research institutes using SamsØ Energy Academy.

  • The final site of offshore wind power plant should be decided by comprehensive examination of various conditions such as wind resource, sea depth, geology, grid connection, social circumstance and environmental issue. Wind condition is typically regarded as the most important factor because wind energy increases in proportion to wind velocity and it directly relates to the amount of power output, efficiency of power plant and profitability. Advanced countries in the offshore wind power sector such as Denmark, UK and Germany, they are analyzing wind resource accurately by installing the meteorological mast in the ocean in order to get the optimal type of wind turbine and maximum generation efficiency. Also, it is made much of designing offshore power plant on the basis of actual measurement by met-mast and those wind farms have a chance to get the loan with reduced interest rate in project financing. In Korea, the HEMOSU-1 is installed in the ocean around Wido island to analyze wind resource of test bed of 100MW offshore wind power on october last year. This paper deals with the design and construction procedure of the first met-mast in Korea and also shows the site characteristics of test bed. Therefore, this paper will give useful information to local governments and private business sector who are trying to construct offshore wind farm and it can also be a good reference for the following projects of meteorological mast in near future.

  • Recently, by the problems owing to utilization of fossil fuel, various green energies receive attention. Wind, the impetus for the wind power generation as one of the green energies, is observed higher quality value in the offshore than onshore. Also, the development of offshore wind turbines is in the spotlight as alternative to solve the problems of onshore wind farm such as securing sites, noise, and electromagnetic waves, and to get efficient wind energy. Therefore, the many researches on offshore wind energy have been carried out. As wind towers are advanced to ocean, offshore wind towers have been enlarged. Thus, stability is required to endure wind force and wave force. In this study, the external forces act on the foundation in multi-layered are calculated by p-y relation.
