  • Simulations using two well-known commercial codes, WAsP and WindSIM, were performed to predict the wind resources in complex terrains of Korea. The predictions from the codes were compared with the measured data. Cross predictions were performed for two closely located measurement sites. The results from WindSIM were found to be more accurate than those from WAsP. The predictions for wind velocity and direction in five different sites of complex terrain from WAsP and WindSIM were also compared. It was found that if the self prediction of the wind velocity and direction from WAsP is close to the measured wind data, the discrepancies between WAsP results and WindSIM results are also close.

  • The yaw gearbox is a key device in a wind power generator that improves power generation efficiency by rotating hundreds of tons (400 to 600 tons) of nacelle so that the blade reaches 90 degrees in the wind direction. Recently, installation sites have been advancing from land to sea as they have become super-large at (8-12) MW to increase the economic feasibility of wind power generators and utilize excellent wind resources, and the target life of large wind power generators is 25 to 30 years. The yaw gearbox of 6 to 12 sets is installed in a very complex place inside the nacelle on the tower with parallels, and it is important to secure the reliability of the yaw gearbox because if a failure occurs after installation, it costs tens to hundreds of times the price of a new product to restore. In this study, equivalent loads were calculated by analyzing failure mode and field data, accelerated life test conditions were established, and a test device was constructed to perform the accelerated life tests and performance tests to ensure the reliability of the gearbox.

  • The only practical way to measure wind resource at high-altitude over 100 m above ground for a feasibility study on a high-rise building integrated wind turbine might be ground-based remote sensing. The remote-sensing campaign was performed at a 145 m-building roof in Jamsil where is a center of metropolitan city Seoul. The campaign aimed uncertainty assessment of Leosphere WindCube LIDAR and Scintec MPAS SODAR through a mutual comparison. Compared with LIDAR, the data availability of SODAR was about 2/3 at 550 m altitude while both showed over 90% under 400 m, and it is shown that the data availability decrease may bring a distortion of statistical analysis. The wind speed measurement of SODAR was fitted to a slope of 0.92 and $R^2$ of 0.90 to the LIDAR measurement. The relative standard deviation of wind speed difference and standard deviation of wind direction difference were evaluated to be 30% and 20 degrees, respectively over the whole measurement heights.

  • Wind monitoring system is an absolutely-required system for assessing a performance and fatigue load of the wind energy generator in an on-shore wind energy experimental research complex. It was implemented for the purpose of monitoring the wind information measured from a meteorological tower at the monitoring house and of utilizing the measured data for the performance assessment, by using the LabVIEW program. Then, by adding the performance assessment-related data acquired from the wind energy generator during the performance assessment and the data recorder for synchronizing the data of meteorological tower, the system was implemented. Because it transmitted the data by converting the output 'RS-232' of data logger which measures the wind condition into CAN protocol, the data error rate was minimized, This paper is intended to explain the developed wind data monitoring system.

  • Recently, as wind farms using wind power as new and renewable energy have been installed nationwide, noise problems have emerged. The environmental impact assessment and post-environmental impact assessment also require the measurement of background noise and low-frequency noise for wind farms, especially by applying the living noise measurement method according to the low-frequency noise management guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment in 2018. Due to the nature of wind power generators that generate loud noise in high winds, noise measurement should be made at high winds, but when wind speed increases, wind noise increases and living noise and low-frequency noise are not properly evaluated. Therefore, the type of noise generated by wind power generators was confirmed, and matters to be considered when measuring wind noise such as wind noise were confirmed.

  • In order to support wind power development in Jejudo, the island of winds, the wind resource database KIER-WindJeju has been established by meteor-statistical analysis on met-mast measurements of KIER. The analysis includes tower shading, exposure category, wind profile exponent for wind speed extrapolation to hub height of wind turbine, and correlation matrix between neighboring sites to assist choice of appropriate reference site for long-term correlation. KIER-WindJeju will be provided as an add-on of Google $Earth^{TM}$ and will be used as a guideline of future wind resource assessment in Jejudo.

  • A wind energy assessment is an integrated analysis of the potential of wind energy resources of a particular area. In this work, the wind energy potentials for Mauritius have been assessed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The approach employed in this work aims to enhance the assessment of wind energy potentials for the siting of large-scale wind farms in the island. Validation of the model is done by comparing simulated wind speed data to experimental ones measured at specific locations over the island. The local wind velocity resulting from the CFD simulations are used to compute the weighted-sum power density including annual directional inflow variations determined by wind roses. The model is used to generate contour maps of velocity and power, for Mauritius at a resolution of 500 m.

  • In Korea, experiences in wind farm operation are limited and the foundation for setting standards in electrical system connection is still weak in comparison to the operation experience in connection of wind power to the electrical system of other countries around the world. Therefore, standards that are being applied in various countries for connection and optimal operation in wind farms need to be examined, and in addition, procedures for the assessment of the effects on the system are needed for setting connection standards and optimal operation plans in accordance with Korean electrical system characteristics. In this study, procedures for the assessment of effects of wind power connection to the electrical system are presented.
