  • A study on Nacelle Lidar (Light detection and ranging) measurement error and the data reliability verification was carried out at Haengwon wind farm on Jeju Island. For measurement data error processing, the characteristics of Nacelle Lidar measurements were analyzed by dividing into three parts, which are weather conditions (temperature, humidity, atmosphere, amount of precipitation), mechanical movement (rotation of wind turbine blades, tilt variation of Nacelle Lidar) and Nacelle Lidar data availability. After processing the measurement error, the reliability of Nacelle Lidar data was assessed by comparing with wind data by an anemometer on a met mast, which is located at a distance of 200m from the wind turbine with Nacelle Lidar. As a result, various weather conditions and mechanical movement did not disturb reliable data measurement. Nacelle Lidar data with availability of 95% or more could be used for checking Nacelle Lidar wind data reliability. The reliability of Nacelle Lidar data was very high with regression coefficient of 98% and coefficient of determination of 97%.

  • In accordance with the policy of local government, the large scale of wind farms have been installed in Jeju power system. However, The intermittent characteristics of wind power output may cause grid voltage and frequency variation, especially in weak power system. One of the solution to solve this problem is installation of Energy storage system (ESS). In this case, the ESS will regulate the active power generated from wind farm to mitigate fluctuation. Actually, the local government of Jeju island constructed ESS connected to Hangwon wind turbine in 2016. From this point, this paper analyzes requirement capacity of ESS to mitigate wind power fluctuation based on measured data from Hangwon wind turbine and ESS. The simulation results will be carried out by Matlab program.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of power generation output at Haeng-won wind farm and how to determine the optimized ESS capacity for power stabilizing. Depend on the fluctuation rate of wind power output variation, wind farm capacity and site, power stabilization will be impacted. Therefore, we need to determine proper ESS capacity. Using the actual data of Haeng-won wind farm from 2009. 3 to 2010.2., capacity of ESS was determined by moving average value. To verify the proposed algorithm, simulations are carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC program. As a result, optimal ESS capacity of Haeng-won wind farm in Jeju is estimated about 1.63 MWh.

  • The comparative performance of the WAsP in calculating the wind climate in complex terrain has been examined in order to test the predictability of the wind resource assessment computer code in our country. An analysis was carried out of predicted and experimental 10-min averaged wind data collected over 8 months at four monitoring sites in SongDang province, Jeju island, composed of sea, inland flat terrain, a high and a low slope craters. The comparisons show that the WAsP preditions give better agreement with experimental data by adjusting the roughness descriptions, the obstacle list.

  • The development of the solar and the wind power energy is necessary since the future alternative energies should have no pollution and no limitation. currently power generation system of MW scale has been developed, but it still has a few faults that its operation depends on with the weather condition. In order to solve these existing problems. combined generation system of photovoltaic(400W) and wind power generation system(400W) was suggested. It combines wind power and solar energy to have the supporting effect from each other. However. since the combined generation system cannot always generate stable output with ever-changing weather condition, power compensation device that uses elastic energy of spiral spring was added. In an experiment. when output of system gets lower than 12V(charging voltage), additional power was from the stored rotational energy of spiral spring.

  • In this paper, a forecasting model of wind speed at Walryong Site, Jeju Island is presented, which has been developed and evaluated as a first step toward establishing Korea Forecasting Model of Wind Power Generation. The forecasting model is constructed based on neural network and is trained with wind speed data observed at Cosan Weather Station located near by Walryong Site. Due to short period of measurements at Walryong Site for training statistical model Gosan Weather Station's long-term data are substituted and then transplanted to Walryong Site by using Measure-Correlate-Predict technique. One to three-hour advance forecasting of wind speed show good agreements with the monitoring data of Walryong site with the correlation factors 0.96 and 0.88, respectively.

  • A feasibility study to estimate annual energy production of an offshore wind farm was performed using MERRA reanalysis data. Two well known commercial codes commonly used to wind farm design and power prediction were used. Three years of MERRA data were used to predict annual energy predictions of the offshore wind farm close to Copenhagen from 2011 to 2013. The availability of the wind farm was calculated from the power output data available online. It was found from the study that the MERRA reanalysis data with commercial codes could be used to fairly accurately predict the annual energy production from offshore wind farms when a meteorological mast is not available.

  • A planetary boundary layer model has been modified to study the feasibility of siting the wind energy conversion systems over Jejudo island. Our objective is to demonstrate a numerical model that is simple enough to be economical in terms of computational cost and contains most of the mesoscale processes occurring in the planetary boundary layer at the same time. Simulated fields of atmospheric parameters are compared favorably with available climatological data and interpreted in terms of physical phenomena occurring.

  • The fluctuation of the output power of wind farms will be able to cause the impact on the Jeju power system such as power quality and stability. To settle the matter, many researchers have proposed the use of the BESS(Battery Energy Storage System) in the wind farm. In this paper, The BESS is applied to each wind farms for mitigating the fluctuation of wind power output. The BESS is controlled for smoothing the output of wind farms. Two kinds of simulation will be carried out. First, the simulation results by using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program are compared to the measured data from the real power grid in Jeju Island. The other is to analyze the output of wind farms when the BESS is applied to the simulation works. The simulation results will demonstrate the effectiveness of using BESS to stabilize for power grid in Jeju Island.

  • The annual energy production of Gangwon wind farm was predicted for three consecutive years of 2007, 2008 and 2009 using commercial programs, WindPRO and WindSim which are known to be used the most for wind resource prediction in the world. The predictions from the linear code, WindPRO, were compared with both the actual energy prediction presented in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) monitoring report of the wind farm and also the predictions from the CFD code, WindSim. The results from WindPRO were close to the actual energy productions and the errors were within 11.8% unlike the expectation. The reason for the low prediction errors was found to be due to the fact that although the wind farm is located in highly complex terrain, the terrain steepness was smaller than a critical angle($21.8^{\circ}$) in front of the wind farm in the main wind direction. Therefore no flow separation was found to occur within the wind farm. The flow separation of the main wind was found to occur mostly behind the wind farm.
