  • In this paper, a novel compact microstrip-fed antenna with band-rejection characteristic for wideband applications is proposed. By cutting an L-shaped notch on the radiation patch, the wideband property for the proposed antenna is achieved. In addition, a C-shaped slot is introduced to obtain the band rejection operation of the antenna. The antenna, with very small size of $15.5\times21 mm^2$ including the ground plane, operates over 3.08 to 10.97 GHz and has the rejection band of 5.03 to 5.91 GHz for $S_{11}$ < -10 dB.

  • This paper presents a direct-conversion I/Q up-mixer block, which supports $3{\sim}5$ GHz ultra-wideband(UWB) applications. It consists of a VI converter, a double-balanced mixer, a RF amplifier, and a differential-to-single signal converter. To achieve wideband characteristics over $3{\sim}5$ GHz frequency range, the double-balanced mixer adopts a shunt-peaking load. The proposed RF amplifier can suppress unwanted common-mode input signals with high linearity. The proposed direct-conversion I/Q up-mixer block is implemented using $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The measured results for three channels show a power gain of $-2{\sim}-9$ dB with a gain flatness of 1dB, a maximum output power level of $-7{\sim}-14.5$ dBm, and a output return loss of more than - 8.8 dB. The current consumption of the fabricated chip is 25.2 mA from a 1.8 V power supply.

  • A microstrip dual-wideband bandpass filter using a multimode resonator (MMR) is proposed in this letter. The proposed MMR loaded with a T-shaped open-ended stub and a short-ended stub exhibits triple mode characteristics, and a synthesis method is developed to illustrate the wide passband with independently controllable center frequencies and bandwidths. To verify this design methodology, a dual-wideband filter with fractional bandwidths of 19.1% and 27.9% is designed and fabricated. The measured results agree with the simulations.

  • We present experimental demonstrations of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures for the wideband suppression of radiated emissions from a power bus in high-speed printed circuit boards (PCBs). In most of the PCB designs, a parallel plate waveguide (PPW) structure is employed for a power bus. This structure significantly produces the wideband-radiated emissions resulting from parallel plate modes. To suppress the parallel plate modes in the wideband frequency range, the power buses based on the electromagnetic bandgap structure with a defected ground structure (DGS) are presented. DGSs are applied to a metal plane that is connected to a rectangular EBG patch by using a via structure. The use of the DGS increases the characteristic impedance value of a unit cell, thereby substantially improving the suppression bandwidth of the radiated emissions. It is experimentally demonstrated that the DGS-EBG structure significantly mitigates the radiated emissions over the frequency range of 0.5 GHz to 2 GHz as compared to the PPW.

  • This paper deals with a filterbank based on the IMM (Interacting Multiple Model) that combines data from a sensor and uses them selectively depending on a level of maneuver. Furthermore, within the maneuver interval, the existing IMM filter has disadvantages such as unnecessary target estimation errors caused by using a constant velocity model and an increase of computation load because of a fixed structure. On the other hand, the proposed IMM filterbank overcomes these disadvantages by using three model groups and designs a filterbank to cope with a wideband-maneuvering target. The performances of the IMM filterbank was evaluated through comparison with the existing IMM via computer simulations. The results show good performances for a wideband-maneuvering target.

  • Novel design of a wideband monopole antenna for DVB-H service is presented. The proposed antenna is designed based on a monopole antenna. It consists of folded monopole and parallel parasitic element. The folded segment of the folded monopole makes the antenna shorter. The length of the parasitic element obtains additional resonance frequencies. The gap distance between the folded monopole and the parasitic element is a key parameter to control impedance matching for wideband operation. The antenna has wide band performance, good impedance and radiation characteristics from 470 MHz to 870 MHz. The measured return loss for operating frequencies over DVB-H band is better than 10 dB. Good radiation patterns are also obtained. The measured results are compared with calculated results using Ansoft HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator).

  • In this paper, a wideband MMIC LNA was designed using low Q matching network. Gains of 9.8~12.2 ㏈, and noise figures of 1.7~2.1 ㏈ were obtained from the fabricated wideband MMIC LNA in the frequency ranges of 1.5~2.5㎓. And maximum output power of 10.83 ㏈m were obtained at the center frequency of 2 ㎓. The chip size of the fabricated wideband MMIC low noise amplifier is 1.4 mm$\times$1.4 mm.

  • A transformer feedback low-noise amplifier (LNA) is implemented in a standard $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process, which exploits drain-to-gate transformer feedback technique for wideband input matching and operates across entire 3~5 GHz ultra-wideband (UWB). The proposed LNA achieves power gain above 9.5 dB, input return loss less than 15.0 dB, and noise figure below 4.8 dB, while consuming 8.1 mW from a 1.8-V supply. To the authors' knowledge, drain-to-gate transformer feedback for wideband input matching cascode LNA is the first adopted technique for UWB application.

  • In Lamb wave detection of damages in smart structures, the excitation pulse is usually designed as a narrow band burst wave for the convenience of analysis and recognition. However, the wideband excitation can excite more modes in plate/shell structure and thus provides extra information for changes of the structure. This paper presents a method that can extract information in wideband Lamb wave signals. By transforming the detected signals into various sub-frequency band, the measured signal can be converted to its equivalences of narrow band excitations, therefore, the information in different frequency bands can be acquired from a single test and in the same time the complicity of wideband signal can be simplified. Some test results are provided to verify this method.
