  • This paper presents a design method for improving the low relative illumination and large distortion due to widening the field of a system. A tele-centric optical system in image space was suggested to increase the relative illumination. Through the analyses of the third-order aberrations affected by introducing aspherical surfaces, we have proposed a method to determine analytically what surface should be aspheric to correct each aberration effectively. By utilizing this method to design a wide field lens, a tele-centric wide field lens with f-number of F/2.0 was obtained. Even though the field angle is 120 degrees, it has a very low distortion less than -2% and high relative illumination more than 73.7%. In conclusion, this analytic method for selecting aspherical surfaces is expected to serve as a useful way to find design solutions.

  • This paper presents the auto-extraction method that searches for the Mapping points in the calibration algorithm of the image acquired by the wide angle CCD camera. In this algorithm, we remove the noise from the distorted image and then obtain the edge image. Proposed method extracts the distortion point, comparing the threshold value of the histogram of the horizontal and vertical pixel lines in edge image. This processing step can be directly applied to the original image of the wide angle CCD camera output. Proposed method results are compared with hand-worked result image using the two wide angle CCD cameras having different angles with the difference value of the result images respectively. Experimental results show that proposed method can allocate the distortion-calibration constant of the wide angle CCD camera regardless of lens type, distortion shape and image type.

  • The Korean spacecraft for the exploration of Apophis will be equipped with an optical navigation camera with a wide-angle lens. The major purpose of the wide-angle camera is to capture imagery during the rendezvous phase in order to determine the spacecraft's position and the pointing direction relative to the asteroid Apophis. Two potential sciences, however, can be achieved by the wide-angle camera: (1) to measure the high-order gravity terms, and (2) to capture possible ejecting small particles. In this presentation, we will discuss instrument specification and operation scenario required to accomplish the given science objectives.

  • The paper studies in the wide-angle lens and distortion tendency and employs the correction techniques suitable to the fish-eye lens using the existing photographic survey methods. After carrying out the calibration of the the fish-eye lens, we calculated the correction parameters, and then developed the method that convert the original image-point to new image-point correcting distortion. The objectives of suggested calibration method in this paper are to calibrate the image of the the fish-eye lens used in the computer-vision and the control-instrumentation field widely. The proposed technique expects to improve the accuracy of the image of the fish-eye lens in the indoor tracking and monitoring field. Also the referenced cross point auto-extraction program is embodied for improving efficiency of the lens correction techniques. Consequently, this calibration method would be applied to the automated distorting correction method on not only the fish-eye lens also general lens.

  • In this paper, we discuss a camera that is fixed in the same view as the TOF sensor and can be installed horizontally in the vehicle's moving direction. This camera applies 1280×720 resolution to improve object recognition accuracy, outputs images at 30fps, and can apply a wide-angle fisheye lens of 180° or more.

  • In this paper, a motion-based ROI extraction algorithm from a high resolution fisheye image is proposed for multi-view monitoring systems. Lately fisheye cameras are widely used because of the wide angle-of-view and they basically provide a lens correction functionality as well as various viewing modes. However, since the distortion-free angle of conventional algorithms is quite narrow due to the severe distortion ratio, there are lots of unintentional dead areas and they require much computation time in finding undistorted coordinates. Thus, the proposed algorithm adopts an image decimation and a motion detection methods, that can extract the undistorted ROI image with a standard angle-of-view for the fast and intelligent surveillance system. In addition, a mesh-type ROI is presented to reduce the lens correction time, so that this independent ROI scheme can parallelize and maximize the processor's utilization.

  • In this paper, a symmetric microwave lens to steer wide angle and to operate at broad band frequency range for a linear phased array transmitter was designed. To get accurate beam steering performance far a linear phased array transmitter, uniform amplitude transmission characteristics of microwave lens was focused. The measured result for the insertion loss deviation between Input and output ports of microstrip lens with 8 beam ports and 8 array ports was $\pm$3.1 ㏈ over 6~18 ㎓ band, which was very uniform characteristics. Using 8 elements linear array antenna, it was confirmed the radiation beam could be steered over $\pm$60$^{\circ}$ in azimuth. And the measured lens performance data and multi-beam steering pattern were presented.

  • A lot of research about camera calibration and lens distortion for wide-angle lens has been made. Especially, calibration for fish-eye lens which has 180 degree FOV(field of view) or above is more tricky, so existing research employed a huge calibration pattern or even 3D pattern. And it is important that calibration parameters (such as distortion coefficients) are suitably initialized to get accurate calibration results. It can be achieved by using manufacturer information or lease-square method for relatively narrow FOV(135, 150 degree) lens. In this paper, without any previous manufacturer information, camera calibration and barrel undistortion for fish-eye lens with over 180 degree FOV are achieved by only using one calibration pattern image. We applied QR decomposition for initialization and Regularization for optimization. With the result of experiment, we verified that our algorithm can achieve camera calibration and image undistortion successfully.

This paper describes the analysis technique, and presents the results of the parametric study of Luneburg lens antennas by varying design parameters suoh as the diameter of the lens antenna (up to 80 wavelength), number of spherical shells (up to 30 shells), air-gaps between spherical shells, and dielectric loss of the material. Many representative engineering design curves including the far-field patterns, wide-angle sidelobe characterizations, antenna efficiency have been presented.

  • Recently, the color separation issue of wide-spreading white LEDs has attracted attention due to their wide applicability as light sources in direct-lit LCD backlights. These wide-spreading LED packages usually consist of LED chips, a color-conversion phosphor layer, and a light-shaping lens. The technical aspect of this color issue was related to a method for balancing the yellow spectral component emitting from phosphors with respect to the blue one from the LED chip as a function of viewing angle. In this study, we suggested an approach for carrying out quantitative analysis for the color separation problem occurring in wide-spreading LED packages by optical simulation. In addition, the effect of an internal scattering layer on the color uniformity was investigated, which may be considered as a potential solution for this problem.
