  • The migration and proliferation of keratinocytes are key events in re-epithelization, itself a major phase in the wound healing process. Cuscuta japonica Choisy (CJC) is used as a traditional medicine to improve liver, heart, and intestinal function, and its extracts are reported to have various biological properties such as whitening, anti-oxidancy, and an anti-acne effect. However, it is not yet known in particular whether or not CJC essential oil (CJCEO) affects skin regeneration. In the present study, we isolated CJCEO by solvent extraction and tested its effect on wound healing responses using normal human keratinocytes, namely HaCaT cells. We found that CJCEO induced proliferation as well as migration in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with a control group, CJCEO treatment at 250 ㎍/ml increased proliferation by 239.98±5.51% in HaCaT cells in a dose and migration by 124.86±6.06%. Moreover, the oil induced sprout outgrowth and, at 250 ㎍/ml, increased collagen synthesis by 148.56±15.47% in HaCaT cells. These results demonstrate that CJCEO may promote skin regeneration and wound healing by increasing the migration, proliferation, and collagen synthesis of HaCaT cells. We therefore suggest that CJCEO could be used as a cosmetic material.

  • Korean Ginseng is a medicinal herb which grows naturally in korea. an ancient country situated in north-eastern Asia. Its medical use was already well known to herb doctors in this region about five thousand years ago since the effectiveness of korean ginseng has been recognized through practical use for a long time. Korean Ginseng has always been regarded as a devine cure. The name "Ginseng" can be found in various medicinal books. many of which were written as early as B.C. 100. In the records of many chinese medical books. dating from the inception of publishing, it was noted that Korean Ginseng was of the highest level of quality. Korean Ginseng originally grew in the mountains of korea. However, this wild Korean Ginseng(js called SANSAM) could not meet the ever-increasing demands. and from the 16th century. it has been cultivated on farms for mass processing and supplying in korea(js called INSAM). It was already recognized in korea a long time ago(B.C. 57 - A.D. 668) that Korean Ginseng possessed the qualities of panacea, tonic and rejuvenator, and had other medicinal properties as well. The effectiveness of Korean Ginseng is widely recognized among south-eastern Asians as well as Chinese. As its effect has been proved scientifically. Korean Ginseng is now becoming the ginseng for all human beings in the world. Korean ginseng is differently called according to processing method. Dried thing is Insam(white ginseng), boiled or steamed is Hongsam(red ginseng). 장뇌삼(long headed ginseng) is artificially grown in the mountain no in field for a long time. • This study confirmed emulsion stability after performing antioxidant, whitening, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory efficacy evaluation to find out the availability of Sicyos angulatus L. (SA) which is designated as an ecological disturbance species as a functional cosmetic material. SA was extracted with Deionized Water (SAW) and 70% EtOH (SAE). Compared to SAW, SAE has excellent antioxidant efficacy by showing scavenging activity and SOD-like activity against DPPH radical and ABTS+ radical, and inhibits melanin production by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase. SAW had no antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli (E.c), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S.e), Staphylococcus aureus (S.a), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.a), and Cutibacterium acnes (C.a) strains, while SAE showed antibacterial activity by producing clear zones in E.c, S.e, P.a, and C.a strains except S.a. In LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells, SAE showed efficacy against anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the production of NO by inhibiting the expression of iNOS and COX-2 than SAW. It was confirmed that the SAE-added emulsion was not separated at temperatures of 4℃, 25℃, and 50℃, the pH and viscosity did not change significantly in numerical terms, and the particle size was similar to that of the control emulsion, so it did not affect the formulation. Based on these results, we suggest its potential as a new material for functional cosmetics research.

  • Korean perilla (Perilla frutescens Britten var. Japonica Hara) has been used in various ways in food since before the Unified Silla period, and it has not been systematically studied due to its long cultivation history. However, the global perilla oil market is expected to reach $1,854.55 million by 2031, up from $981.6 million in 2023, with a CAGR of 10.6%. In the bio industry, bio cosmetics refer to cosmetics that contain natural ingredients based on biotechnology, but there is still no clear academic definition. As consumers' interest has recently focused on raw materials and ingredients, interest in substances based on natural substances that enhance skin metabolism is increasing. Despite the importance of natural extracts produced domestically, there has not been much research on domestic perilla seed as a cosmetic raw material and material. This study was conducted based on previous papers and literature studies conducted over the past five years on perilla seed after oil extraction, and it was found that perilla seed contains a large amount of phenolic compounds with excellent radical scavenging ability, and thus it was possible to find out the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, whitening effects, and anti-obesity effects of skin beauty. Therefore, this study is expected to be used as basic data for various studies on perilla, a natural extract, as a bio-industry cosmetic material.

  • In this study, we investigated the applicability of functional materials by examining various physiological activities with an extract from the Agrimonia pilosa root. The A. pilosa extract showed low cytotoxicity against murine melanoma B16F10 cells. With little or no cytotoxicity at various concentrations, the A. pilosa extract showed high levels of DPPH radical scavenging activity ($ID_{50}$, 20.70 mg/L) and anti-microbial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. In particular, it had a high level of anti-microbial activities against Gram-positive bacteria. These results suggest that the A. pilosa extract can be used as a natural preservative. It also showed inhibition of tyrosinase activity ($ID_{50}$, 90.18 mg/L), as does kojic acid ($ID_{50}$, 89.13 mg/L), and especially, a higher decrease in melanin content ($ID_{50}$, 62.5 mg/L) than the arbutin level ($ID_{50}$, 100.7 mg/L) as a positive control. These findings suggest that the A. pilosa extract inhibits melanin synthesis by suppressing the intracellular tyrosinase expression. These results indicate that the A. pilosa extract may be an effective material for functional cosmetics, such as skin whitening materials.

  • Agar is a cell wall component of macro red algae that can be hydrolyzed by agarase. Agarases are classified into ${\alpha}$-agarase (E.C. 3.2.1.158) and ${\beta}$-agarase (E.C. 3.2.1.81), in accordance with their cleavage pattern, and can be grouped in the glycoside hydrolase (GH)-16, -58, -86, -96, and -118 family according to the amino acid sequences of the proteins. Many agarases and/or their genes have been detected, isolated, and recombinantly expressed from bacteria, and metagenomes have their origins in sea and terrestrial environments. Products of agarases, agarooligosaccharides and neoagarooligosaccharides, represent wide functions such as antitumor, immune stimulation, antioxidation, prebiotic, hepa-protective, antibacterial, whitening, and moisturizing effects; hence, broad applications would be possible in the food industry, cosmetics, and medical fields. In addition, agarases are also used as a tool enzyme for research. This paper reviews the sources, purifications and detection methods, and application fields of agarases. The role of agarases in agar metabolism and the function of their enzymatic products are also surveyed.

  • To screen antioxidative and whitening effects of some medicinal plants, 70% ethanol extracts were tested for their electron donating abilities to DPPH ( ${\alpha}$, ${\alpha}$-diphenyl- ${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl) and inhibitory activities against lipid peroxidation, and tyrosinase inhibition in vitro. The electron donating activities of 70% ethanol extracts at the concentration of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml were in the order of Forsythiae fructus > Polyporaceae > Glycyrrhizae radix > Schizandrae fructus > Ramulus mori > Carthami semen. The order was Forsythiae fructus > Carthami semen > Schizandrae fructus > Polyporaceae > Glycyrrhizae radix when tested at 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, indicating that the activities depend on the concentration. The electron donating activities of Forsythiae fructus and Carthami semen at the concentration of 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml were 37% and 31% respectively. Lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities were in the order of Artemisia messerschimidtiana > Glycyrrhizae uadix > Rehmaniae radix > Ramulus mori. Tyrosinase inhibitory activities were in the order of Ramulus mori > Artemisia messerschimidtiana > Oyster mushroom. The results suggest that Forsythiae fructus, Artemisia messerschimidtiana and Ramulus mori could be used as materials for anti-skin aging functional cosmetics.

  • The aims of this work were to characterize and determine bioactivities of crude exopolysaccharide (EPS) extract from Bacillus tequilensis PS21 isolated from milk kefir from Kampaeng Petch, Thailand. B. tequilensis PS21 produced 112.1 mg dried EPS/l from initial 80 g/l lactose in modified TSB media at 52 h, with EPS product yield of 8.9 mg EPS/g lactose and specific product yield of 0.3 mg EPS/mg biomass. The FTIR result confirmed EPS to be a protein-bound polysaccharide and SEM analysis showed the morphology to be a grainy appearance with an uneven surface, covered with pores. HPLC analysis determined EPS as a heteropolysaccharide consisting of five sugar units with the following molar ratios; xylose (17.65), glucose (2.54), ribose (1.83), rhamnose (1.23), and galactose (1). Chemical components of this EPS were predominantly carbohydrate at 697.8 mg/g EPS (65%), protein 361.4 mg/g EPS (34%), and nucleic acid 12.5 mg/g EPS (1%). The EPS demonstrated antioxidant activities at 57.5% DPPH scavenging activity, $37.2{\mu}M\;Fe(II)/mg$ EPS and $34.9{\mu}M\;TEAC\;{\mu}M/mg$ EPS using DPPH, FRAP and ABTS assays, respectively. EPS also exhibited anti-tyrosinase activity at 34.9% inhibition. This work represents the first finding of EPS produced by Bacillus sp. from Thai milk kefir which shows potential applications in the production of antioxidant functional foods and whitening cosmetics. However, optimization of EPS production for industrial exploitation requires further study to ascertain the economic potential.
