Study on the Renovation of White Clover Dominated Pasture (White Clover 우점초지의 갱신에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of renovation of white clover dominated pasture. It was arranged in a randomized block design with two mixture types: 5-species mixtures(5-SM); orchardgrass 40% + tall fescue 20% + perennial ryegrass 10% + Kentucky bluegrass 10% + red clover 20% and 8-species mixtures(8-SM); orchardgrass 40% + tall fescue 20% + perennial ryegrass 10% + Kentucky bluegrass 5% + redtop 5% + red fescue 5% + alfalfa 5% + red clover 10%. This study was carried out from 1997 to 1999 at Chungnam National University. In the white clover dominated pasture, the DM yield was higher obtained in the 8-SM than that of in 5-SM, but there was no significant difference between 8-SM and 5-SM in both chemical composition and DM digestibility except content of CP.   • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of antagonistic bacteria and pathogenic fungi on growth and yields of white clover(Trifo1iurn repens L.) in continuous cropping soil(CCS) and non-continuous cropping soil(NCCS). The gowth experiment of white clover was conducted at pots in a vinyl house. White clover was established by seeding into pots of 12 cm in diameter and 9 cm in depth containing 1:l mixture of soil and vermiculite with antagonistic bacteria and pathogenic fungi. In dark culture experiment, white clover lived longer in treatment of antagonistic bacteria than in treatment of control, but lived shorter in CCS than in NCCS. Dry weight of white clover was increased by the inoculation of the antagonistic bacteria(p< 0.05), but decreased by the inoculation of the pathogenic fungi(p< 0.05) both CCS and NCCS. In conclusion, bacterization of white clover with antagonistic bacteria enhances the growth and yield of white clover.

Effects of Spring Seeding on Growth and Carbon Uptake of Clover Species in Upland Soil

  • Clover, a legume crop, is a landscape crop and green manure crop that can be sowing in spring. Clover serves various roles such as landscape composition, weeds suppressing, prevention of soil loss and nutrients on sloping, atmosphere purification, and supplying nitrogen in soil. Thus, in order to utilize this crop in agricultural land, we observed its effect on growth and carbon uptake in upland soil. The plant height of clover species increased with late harvesting time and was 46.0~55.0 cm at 90 days after seeding (DAS) and the longest in red clover. The dry matter increased at 85 DAS, after that, decreased slightly. The dry matter of white clover and red clover was $3.0Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and $3.1Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, and crimson clover was $2.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$, significantly lower than other clover. Crops bloomed at 90 DAS were white clover and crimson clover, the period from sowing to flowering was 78 days for crimson clover and 85 days for white clover. The nitrogen content of the clover species was $12.0{\sim}29.3g\;kg^{-1}$, with the highest of $29.3g\;kg^{-1}$ for white clover. The carbon content of clover species was similar in all clover species, but carbon uptake was high in white clover and red clover, and lowest in crimson clover. The carbon uptake of the plant increased to 85 DAS and then decreased. Based on the clover growth and carbon uptake, white clover and red clover were promising when sown in spring.

  • This pot experiment was conducted in order to find out the effects of boron application($B_{0}$ /; control, $B_1$; 0.2, $B_2$; 2.0,$ B_3$; 6.0, $B_4$; 15.0 B me/pot) on the forage performance of pure and mixed cultures of orchardgrass and white clover. The 2nd part was concerned with the changes in the forage yields and concurrence index. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The optimum boron application($B_2$) generally resulted in the increase of both forage yields, but the effects of boron application on them were different according to the forage species, whether it was a pure or mixed cultures, additional fertilization, and cutting order. The effects of boron application on the forage productivity were more obvious in white clover than in orchardgrass. 2. Owing to the decline of white clover as affected by the application of additional fertilizers, especially N, in the grass-clover mixed cultures, the effects of boron application on the white clover yields showed a numerical inferiority compared with the pure culture. It was recognized that the yield increase and botanical composition of white clover in grass-clover mixed cultures could be regulated by the application of additional fertilizers and boron. 3. The toxic boron application($B_3$ and $B_4$) resulted in a decreased yield of both forages. The yield change of orchardgrass tended to be similar between pure and mixed cultures, whereas it of white clover tended to be more negative in mixed than in pure cultures. 4. With the application of additional fertilizers, especially N, the botanical composition and concurrence index in grass-clover mixed cultures were relatively increased in orchardgrass, and decreased in white clover. The botanical composition of orchardgrass increased from 55% to 75%, whereas it of white clover decreased from 45% in the first half cutting to 25% in the second half cutting, respectively.

  • This pot experiment was. conducted to investigate the effects of systematic variation application of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn on forage performance of orchardgrass and white clover. The treatments of systematic variation were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, and 100/0% in the Fe/Cu(trial-1), Mn/Zn(trial-2), and Fe + Cu/Mn + Zn(trial-3), respectively. The treatments of Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn(trial-4) were composed of 70% in main element and 10% in other 3 elements, respectively. 1. In general, the unbalanced applications of Fe and Mn resulted in the Mn and Fe deficiencies(chlorosis) on white clover, respectively, because of the antagonism between Fe and Mn. In white clover, the traits of growth, root/nodule, and flowering, which were influenced by the systematic variation of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn, were closely correlated to each other. In the Fe/Cu trial, the 0/100 and 25/75 induced a Fe-deficiency on white clover, and the 0/100 also showed poor root growth and flowering. In addition, the 50/50 and 75/25 showed an early flowering of white clover. 2. In the Mn/Zn trial, the 0/100 induced a severe Mn-deficiency(chlorosis) on white clover. The 25/75 and 50/50, however, diminished the chlorosis symptom. The 75/25 and 100/0 showed generally good root growth and flowering of white clover. 3. In the Fe + Cu/Mn + Zn trial, the 0/100 induced a Fe-deficiency, and the 100/0 induced a Mn-deficiency on white clover, which were correlated to the poor root growth and flowering. The 75/25 showed good root growth and flowering of white clover. 1be flowering of white clover tended to be more influenced by the Fe + Cu than by the Mn + Cu ratios. 4. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, the Fe and Mn deficiencies on white clover, which were influenced by the Mn and Fe treatments, also occurred. The Cu and Zn-deficiency symptoms, however, were not recognized. General differences have been showed in the numbers of flowers as following orders; Zn > Cu > Mn > Fe - 70% treatments.

In the Fe/Cu trial, the relatively high yields were obtained at the $100/0\%$ in orchardgrass and at the $75/25\%$ in white clover. The yields of white clover were more negatively influenced by the 100/0(Cu control) than by the 0/100(Fe control). The yields of orchardgrass, however, tended to be opposite to the above trends. 2. In the Mn/Zn trial, both forages showed generally high yields at the high ratios of Mn/Zn. Compared with orchardgrass, the yields of white clover were greatly decreased by the Mn-deficiency(low ratio of Mn/Zn). The effects of Zn on forage yields, however, were not recognized. 3. In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the yields of orchardgrass tended to be slightly different among the treatments. The yields of white clover, however, were relatively' high at the 75/25, and showed a severe decrease at the 100/0 in the 2nd half cuts. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, the yields of white clover tended to be relatively high at the Cu and Zn treatments. It was likely to be caused by the balanced Fe/Mn ratio.

Combined application of oil cake and rice bran reduced the number of weeds and increased the yield of paddy rice in a paddy field incorporated with white clover

  • The combined application of oil cake and rice bran into the soil surface was found useful for weed control in our previous pot study. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) while incorporated in the paddy field and effects of combined fertilizer on weed control and rice yield. A plot was divided into two parts i.e. white clover incorporated and not incorporated. The nitrogen content of the incorporated white clover was $12.5gm^{-2}$. Chemical fertilizer and combined fertilizer plots were compared with non-fertilizer conditions. The mixed ratio of combined fertilizer was oil cake 1.35 and rice bran 1.0. Combined fertilizer was applied to the soil surface, and chemical fertilizer was mixed in the soil. Nitrogen application rate was $8gm^{-2}$ for any fertilizer. The weed numbers were significantly reduced in the white clover plot irrespective of application condition both at heading and harvest time. Also, weed control ability was improved by the use of combined fertilizer. In the not incorporated plot, the number of weeds was suppressed about 90% by applying combined fertilizer. The rice yield was markedly increased by the incorporation with white clover under all fertilization conditions. Contribution rates of increased rice yield by white clover and combined fertilizer were about 55% and about 25%, respectively. The rice yield was increased by the incorporation with white clover, and the number of weeds remarkably decreased as well. Also, these effects were improved due to combined application of oil cake and rice bran.

This 1st part was concerned with the changes in the growth, flowers and flower buds, and roots/nodules of forages. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. At the $B_3$ and $B_4$ treatments, the B toxicity was more seriously in white clover than in orchardgrass in the first half of cutting orders, and reduced in the latter half. In white clover, it was more worsened in a mixture than in a pure culture. It was somewhat reduced at the best growth stage of each forage. 2. In orchardgrass, the B toxicity($B_3$,$ B_4$) showed the chlorosis on leaf tips, shallow leaf, little tillers, and weak stems. Whereas it showed the chlorosis/necrosis on old leaf edge, little and weak stolons in white clover. 3. Comparing with the B deficiency($B_{0}$ , $B_1$) and toxicity($B_3$, $B_4$), the optimum B application($B_2$) influenced markedly good growth of shoot, root, nodule, and flower (flower number, blooming period, early full flower) in white clover. 4. Comparing with orchardgrass, white clover was greatly influenced by the boron application. However, this responses of white clover to boron were reduced in a grass-clover mixture with additional fertilization. It was recognized that the good forage performance in a grass-clover mixture could be regulated by the adequate applications of boron and additional fertilizers.s.

Germination and Radicle Elongation of Berseem , Subterranean and White Clover as Affected by NaCl and Temperature (NaCl 농도와 온도에 따른 Berseem , Subterranean 및 White Clover의 발아 및 유근신장)

  • High salinity common in reclaimed soil can reduce germination of crop seeds and aftermath its establishment and production. The experiment was done to measure germination and radicle elongation of berseem, subterranean, white clover and Italian ryegrass as Control under different temperature and NaCl concentrations. Onehundred seeds of berseem (Trifolium ulexandrinum cv. Bigbee). suberranean (T. suhterruneum, cv. Nungarin), white clover (T. repens, cv. Regal) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium mulriflorum, cv. Terafloum) were placed in petri dishes with a sheet of filter paper replaced every two days, and then exposed to 0, 12.5, 25. 50, 100 and 200mh4 of sodium chloride in darkened growth chambers controlled with 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$. Percent germination and radicle elongation were measured. Beneem clover showed greatest daily percent germination among the cloven. That of subterranean clover, moreover, was higher than that of white clover till 4 days after imbibition but the reverse result was true thereafter. Although germination of Italian ryegrass was delayed with decreased at 200mM of NaCl of $20^{\circ}C$. at 200mM of under$15^{\circ}C$ , and at higher than lOOmh4 of all level of temperature, respectively. Berseem clover had greatest radicle length under the same concentration of NaCl regardless of temperature treatment while radicle elongation of subterranean and white clover was repressed over 50-100mM of NaC1. The slope of linear regression equation between concentration of NaCl and percent germination declined under all temperature treatment in order of berseem, subterranean and white clover whereas the reverse result was showed in radicle length.

In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the 0/100 and 100/0 resulted in the somewhat high contents of N-compounds in white clover. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease. In addition, the 100/0 resulted in the relatively high content of soluble N-compounds and low ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds. The protein synthesis in white clover was likely to be negatively influenced by the 100/0. 3. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, white clover showed the low contents of crude and pure protein at the 1st cut. It was likely to be caused by the unbalanced mutual ratios derived from the high application levels of each single element. 4. In white clover at the 5th cut, the 0/100 of Mn/Zn and 100/0 of Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn resulted in the relatively high content of K. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease.
