Classification of different blood cell types is an essential task for human's medical treatment. The white blood cells have different types of cells. Counting total White Blood Cells (WBC) and differential of the WBC types are required by the physicians to diagnose the disease correctly. This paper used transfer learning methods to the pre-trained deep learning models to classify different WBCs. The best pre-trained model was Inception ResNetV2 with Adam optimizer that produced classification accuracy of 98.4% for the dataset comprising four types of WBCs.
An automatic white blood cell differential counting system was developed, which consists of feature extractor, main control computer, auto focus and search part and data acquisition part. This system is used as a clinical instrument whose purpose is to classify white blood cell images. It may also be used for other binary image processing.

This paper presents the development of a microsystem for whole blood purification and electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. Magnetophoresis using continuous diamagnetic capture (DMC) was utilized for whole cell purification and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized for electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. The system was developed on silicon and plastic substrates utilizing conventional microfabrication technologies and plastic microfabrication technologies. Using the magnetophoretic microseparator, white blood cells were purified from a sample of whole blood. The experimental results of the DMC microseparator show that 89.7% of the red blood cells (RBCs) and 72.7% of the white blood cells (WBCs) could be continuously separated out from a whole blood using an external magnetic flux of 0.2 T. EIS was used as a downstream whole cell analysis tool to study the electrophysiological characteristics of purified cells. In this work, primary cultured bovine chromaffin cells and human red blood cells were characterized using EIS. Further analysis capabilities of the EIS were demonstrated by successfully obtaining unique impedance signatures for chromaffin cells based on the whole cell ion channel activity.

Background: There are several studies that report the relationship between leukocytosis and cardiovascular disease mortality. Most of these studies stand on the basis that atherosclerosis is mediated by inflammatory process. By the same token, preoperative white blood cell count is suggested as an independent predictable factor of postoperative mortality and morbidity in coronary artery bypass grafting. The purpose of this study is to define the influence of preoperative white blood cell count on postoperative morbidity and mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting. Material and Method: The medical records of the 133 patients who had undergone isolated coronary artery bypass grafting at Inha University Hospital from 1996 to 2003 were reviewed. Patients were evenly divided into four groups, and named as group A, B, C, and D respectively based on their preoperative white blood cell count in ascending order. The number of patients in each group were 33 with exception of 34 in group A. The range of white blood cell count were from $1.3\times10^3/{\mu}L\;to\;5.9\times10^3/{\mu}L\;in\;group\;A,\; from\;6.0\times10^3/{\mu}L\;to\;7.0\times10^3/{\mu}L\;in\;group\;B,\;from\;7.1\times10^3/{\mu}L\;to\;8.9\times10^3/{\mu}L$ in group C, and from $8.9\times10^3/{\mu}L\;to\;16.9\times10^3/{\mu}L$ in group D. Result: The number of patients with recent myocardial infarction was 0 in group A, $2(6.1\%)$ in group B, $4(12.1\%)$ in group C, and $8(24.3\%)$ in D group, showing proportional increase to the white blood cell count (p<0.01). There were six postoperative deaths; $1(2.9\%)$ in group A, $1(3.0\%)$ in group B, $2(2.6\%)$ in group C, and $2(6.1\%)$ in group D (p=0.44), showing no significant difference between the groups. Postoperative wound infection occurred in 3 patients; all 3 patients were in group D, showing that postoperative wound infection is closely related to the preoperative white blood cell count. Conclusion: The association between preoperative white blood cell count and postoperative mortality could not be defined. The incidence of postoperative wound infection was found to be proportional to the preoperative white blood cell counts.

This paper presents the characterization of a continuous magnetophoretic microseparator for separating white and red blood cells from peripheral whole blood cells based on their native magnetic properties. The magnetophoretic microseparator separated the blood cells using a high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) method without the use of additives such as magnetic beads or probing materials. Experimental results show that the paramagnetic capture mode microseparator can continuously separate out 93.5% of red blood cells and 97.4% of white blood cells from diluted whole blood, and the diamagnetic capture mode microseparator can continuously separate out 89.7% of red blood cells and 72.7 % of white blood cells by using applying an external magnetic flux of 0.2 T using a permanent magnet.

Lead (Pb) is a metal that is generally considered to be toxic to the cardiovascular system. Pb-exposed animals display the evidence of increased oxidative stress and hypertension. The current study was designed to examine whether Korean red ginseng (KRG) has protective effects against Pb-induced hypertension and oxidative stress in Pb-exposed rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to Pb exposure or control groups. KRG was administered in drinking water at a concentration of 100 mg/kg/day; the control group received plain drinking water. Animals in the Pb-exposed groups were provided with drinking water containing 100 ppm Pb acetate for 12 weeks. Blood pressure, plasma glutathione, blood Pb concentration, and hematologic data, such as red blood cell quantity, were determined. Pb poisoning was assessed by measuring the blood Pb concentration. Pb exposure (100 ppm) for 12 weeks resulted in a marked rise in systolic blood pressure and blood Pb concentration, as well as a significant reduction in plasma glutathione levels and red blood cell quantity. Other measurements, such as heart rate, body weight, and white blood cell quantity, were unchanged. Treatment with KRG significantly lowered blood pressure, raised plasma glutathione and increased red blood cell numbers in Pb-exposed animals; it also had no effect on heart rate, body weight, or white blood cell quantity. However, the elevated blood Pb concentration was not reduced by treatment with KRG (100 mg/kg). Taken together, these data indicate that treatment with KRG in Pb-exposed animals can reduce oxidative stress and lower blood pressure, suggesting that KRG might be protective against Pb-exposed hypertension and oxidative stress.
Physiological responses (oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, hemoglobin, red blood cell and white blood cell) of cultured eel, Anguilla japonica to vibration stress were studied in an indoor experimental system. Vibration of 76-93 dB (V) from an electric vibrator was provided in 15-minute intervals during daytime (0800-1800) over a ten day period. Oxygen consumption before the beginning of the experiment (0 day) was 83.9 mg $O_2$$.$kg$^{-1}$ ㆍhr$^{-1}$ . After 1, 5 and 10 days of stress respiration rate decreased by 37.5, 53.7 and 70.5%, respectively. Ammonia excretion showed a similar pattern to that of oxygen consumption. Ammonia excretion decreased by 80.1 % following 10 days of vibration stress. Blood hemoglobin concentration also decreased at 1, 3 and 10th day were 29.4% on day 1,83.9% on day 3 and 87.9% by day 10, while red blood cell counts at day 1 and day 10th were 59.8% and 84.7% lower than initial counts, respectively. The white blood cell count increased by 191.2% at day 7, dropping to 41.5% at day 10. Physiological activity was reduced by 50% following 3.4 days of vibration stress.
A uniform group of 12 upgraded growing goats aged between 6.0 and 7.5 months were used in this study. They were divided into three groups of $T_1$, $T_2$ and $T_3$. Four animals were randomly allocated to each group. They were infected orally with three levels (0 larva, 5,000 larvae and 10,000 larvae) of infective Haemonchus contortus larvae. Before infection, all animals were housed in individual pens with concrete floors. They were provided with a uniform management. Total red blood cells (RBC) and total white blood cells (WBC) were measured by hemacytometric method. Results showed significant interaction effect of H. contortus infection and duration of infection on red blood cell counts. The RBC counts of animals in treatment groups 2 and 3 showed significantly lower values over the control group from the second fortnight to the end of the study. The overall mean RBC values of groups 1, 2 and 3 were 11.73, 9.70 and $9.12million/mm^3$ blood, respectively. H. contortus infection did not significantly influence the total leukocyte counts. Worm infection and duration of infection interaction was also absent on WBC counts. However, the time or duration of infection significantly influenced the WBC counts. Fecal egg counts showed patent infections in the infected animals which also indicated by postmortem worm counts.
This study investigated the effects of vitamin C supplementation on immune status in smoking and nonsmoking male college students. Blood samples were obtained from 15 healthy smoking and from 15 healthy nonsmoking volunteers before and 4 weeks after vitamin C supplementation (1000mg/day). Daily nutrient intakes was also calculated. Plasma vitamin C, E, and A concentrations, white blood cells and subpopulations, lymphocytes and subpopulations, NK cell percentage, plasma immunoglobulin A, G, M and complement C3, plasma interleukin-2 , and prostagladin E2 were measured . Daily vitamin C consumption was lower in smokers than in nonsmokers. Vitamin C supplementation significantly increased plasma vitamin C in smokers, and increased NK cell percentage in smokers and nonsmokers. Plasma IL-2 concentrations were significantly increased by vitamin C supplementation in nonsmokers, and decreased helpe $r^pressor T cell ratio were decreased by vitamin C supplementatiion , but the differences were not significant. White blood cells and subpopulation percentage and plasma prostaglandin E2 concentration were not affected by smoking and vitamin C supplementation. These findings as nonsmokers.rs.
