A Study on Whispering Gallery Mode Dielectric Coupled Resonator which Englarges the Free Spectral Tange (공진주파수 간격을 확장시키는 Whispering Gallery 모드 유전체 복합공진기에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a new coupled resonator which expands free spectral ranges (FSR) of the W. G. mode resonators is presented. The proposed coupled resonator consists of two dielectric disks. The resonance frequency of the coupled resonator is equivalent to the frequency, which satisfies the individual resonance conditions of each disk at the same time. As the results, the FSR is expanded. The coupled resonator proposed in this paper at K-Band is fabricated by using dielectric disks and the dielectric straight waveguides. The validity of proposed coupled resonator was verified through experiments.

  • We explain the basic principle of transformation optics, and introduce several design techniques for transformation cavities that can maintain the characteristics of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) even if the cavity is strongly deformed from a circular shape. As a method of obtaining various transformation cavities under a specific conformal mapping, we suggest a method of parallel movement of the initial cavity domain, and a method of rotating the ellipse as a cavity domain. The internal wave pattern and the far-field output characteristics of several designed resonant modes are numerically calculated. From these results, it is confirmed that a variety of GRIN resonators are possible for a given conformal coordinate transformation.

Bow-tie Mode Lasing in a Grooved Rectangular Semiconductor Microcavity

  • Bow-tie modes were proposed in a grooved rectangular resonator and their lasing characteristics were investigated in semiconductor microcavities. The observed spacing between two adjacent lasing peaks from the grooved cavity was reduced compared to that of 4-bounce whispering gallery modes (WGMs) from the same-sized simple rectangular cavity due to increased round-trip path length of the bow-tie modes. The lasing spectra of bow-tie modes obtained from two adjacent corners showed highly correlated patterns while those of 4-bounce WGMs did not.

Observation of Strong Coupling between Cavity Photon and Exciton in GaN Micro-rod

  • Strong exciton-photon coupling in microcavities have generated an intense research effort since quasiparticles called exciton polaritons are produced and shows interesting phenomena. Most of studies have been done with GaAs based microcavities at cryogenic temperature. Recently, GaN material which has large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength has much attention because strong coupling between photon and exciton could be realized at room temperature. However, fabrication of high quality microcavity using GaN is challengeable due to the large mismatch between the lattice and the thermal expansion coefficient in GaN based distributed Bragg mirror. Here, we observed strong coupling regime of exciton-photon in GaN micro-rods which were grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOCVD) on Si substrate. Owing to the hexagonal cross-section of micro-rod, whispering gallery modes of photon are naturally formed and could be coupled with exciton in GaN. Using angle-resolved micro-photoluminescence measurement, exciton polariton dispersion curves were directly observed from GaN micro-rod. We expect room temperature exciton polariton condensation could be realized in high quality GaN micro-rod.

Simulation of Resonance Shift and Quality Factor for Opto-fluidic Ring Resonator (OFRR) Biosensors (광-유체링공진기(OFRR) 바이오센서에 관한 공진이동과 양호도의 시뮬레이션)

  • In this work, the finite element method was used to investigate the shifts of resonance frequencies and quality factor of whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) for an opto-fluidic ring resonator (OFRR) biosensor. To describe the near-field radiation transfer, the time-domain Maxwell's equations were employed and solved by using the in-plane TE wave application mode of the COMSOL Multiphysics with RF module. The OFRR biosensor model under current study includes a glass capillary with a diameter of 100 mm and wall thickness of 3.0 mm. The resonance energy spectrum curves in the wavelength range from 1545 nm to 1560 nm were examined under different biosensing conditions. We mainly studied the sensitivity of resonance shifts affected by changes in the effective thickness of the sensor resonator ring with a 3.0 mm thick wall, as well as changes in the refractive index (RI) of the medium inside ring resonators with both 2.5 mm and 3.0 mm thick walls. In the bulk RI detection, a sensitivity of 23.1 nm/refractive index units (RIU) is achieved for a 2.5 mm thick ring. In small molecule detection, a sensitivity of 26.4 pm/nm is achieved with a maximum Q-factor of $6.3{\times}10^3$. These results compare favorably with those obtained by other researchers.

  • 굴절율이 외부보다 큰 실린더 (cylinder)나 스피어 (sphere)는 경계면에서의 전반사에 의해 손실이 매우 적은 high-Q 공진기가 될 수 있음이 잘 알려져 있다. 크기가 수 십 $mu extrm{m}$ 되는 실린더나 스피어에서의 공명모드는 편광(TM, TE), 모드 수 (mode number) n, 모드 순서 (mode order) l에 의해 정의되고 WGM (whispering gallery mode)라고도 불리워진다$^{(1)}$ . 모드 수n 이 클수록 모드 순서 l이 작을수록 공명모드의 Q 값은 큰 경향을 가진다. 액체 방울이나 액체 제트와 같이 열적 섭동에 민감한 마이크로 공진기 (micro-cavity)의 경우 Q값이 $10^{7}$ 정도로 제약되나, 실리카 마이크로 스피어 (micro-sphere)와 같은 고체 구에서 측정된 Q값은 약 $101^{10}$ 정도로 손실이 매우 적은 공진기가 될 수 있다$^{(2)}$ . 이와 같은 마이크로 공진기 특성을 이용하여 다양한 형태의 마이크로 공진기 레이저 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 색소가 첨가된 고체구, 액체 방울, 액체 제트 등에서 기본적인 실험이 이루어졌고 반도체마이크로 스피어 구조에서 WGM 레이저$^{(3)}$ , polymer disc laser$^{(4)}$ , 광양자테 (photonic quantum ring)$^{(5)}$ 특성 연구 등이 실용가능성을 목표로 진행되고 있다. A Study on Resonance Frequencies of a Whispering Gallery Mode Dielectric Resonator Considering Electromagnetic Coupling Phenomena with an Excitation Part (여기부와의 전자파 결합 현상을 고려한 위스퍼링 갤러리 모드 유전체 공진기의 공진주파수에 관한 연구)

  • Resonant characteristic of Whispering modes(W. G. mode) on a dielectric disk resonator is influenced by an external circuit that is placed near the disk to excite this type of modes. In order to evaluate this phenomenon, we divide the disk resonator as two parts; a coupling part in which the mode coupling occurs and on uncoupled region. In the coupled part, we regard the part of the disk as a curved waveguide which is loaded with matched circuit, and derive a coupled mode equation for nonparallel dielectric waveguides. From the coupled mode equation, we calculate coupling coefficients and a coupled electromagnetic field. By using the complex coupling coefficients, we can calculate power transfer. We also calculate a resonant frequency in consideration of the mode coupling phenomenon. The calculated resonance frequence is confirmed by experiment for the resonance characteristics. As the results, it is found that the discrepancy between the theoretical and the experimental resonance frequencies is about 1.28% and the discrepancy between theory and experiment of FSR is about 0.6%.
