In order to construct the farm road in Shi-Hwa project, coarse soils excavated from hillsides have been used as road materials for reclamation. Suitable borrow pits available in land are now limited and also they bring about environmental problems when soils are excavated at the borrow pits and transported to the site. When using fine and wet materials as fill, however, many engineering problems can be encountered. Usually, the materials have high water contents, low strength, and high compressibility. In order to use them, we need research that can improve the inherent properties of those materials. In order to tackle with the problems, researches on soil improvement involve mixing lime geo-cement to the fine wet soils. A lab model test is necessary to verify effectiveness and comparison of those techniques. A field test is also required to show applicability and to find problems that may exist in the design and construction stages.
Soil aggregates, resulting from physico-chemical and biological interactions, are important to understand carbon dynamics and material transport in soils. The objective of this study is to investigate stable macro-aggregate (> 0.25mm diameter) in wet sieving (SM) and their relation to soil properties in 15 sites. The clay contents of soils were ranged from 1% to 33%, and their land uses included bare and cultivated lands of annual upland crops, orchard, and grass. Undisturbed 3 inch cores with five replicates were sampled at topsoil (i.e., 0- to 10-cm depth), for analyzing SM and physico-chemical properties, after in situ measurement of air permeability. SM of sandy soils, with clay content less than 2%, was observed as 0%. Except the sandy soils, SM of soils mainly depended on land uses, showing 27%~35% in soils with annual plants such as vegetable and corn, 51% in orchard, and 75% in grass. This sequence of SM is probably due to the different strength of soil disturbance like tillage with different land uses. SM had significant correlation with cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, sand, clay, silt, bulk density, and exchangeable potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg), whereas fluctuating properties with fertilization such as pH, EC, and water soluble phosphorus weren't significantly correlated to the SM. Particularly, exchangeable calcium (Ca) had significant relation with SM, only except soils with oversaturating Ca. This study, therefore, suggested that SM could perceive different land uses and the change of soil properties in soils, necessarily considering soil textures and Ca over-saturation.
The objective of this study is to estimate the impacts of land cover change on the runoff behavior using Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) model and Landsat images. Land cover maps were prepared using three every ten years from 1980 to 2000 of the upper watershed ($258\;km^2$) of Gyeongan stream. Hydrologic parameters of HSPF were calibrated using observed data (1999 - 2000) and validated using observed data (2001, 2003) at Gyeongan gauge station. The simulation results showed that runoff volume and peak rate increased as $15.0\;km^2$ forest areas decreased and $19.3\;km^2$ urban areas increased for 20 years land use changes. The runoff volume showed a higher rate of increase in wet year (2003, 1709.4 mm) than in dry year (2001, 871.2 mm). The peak runoff increased $13.3\;\%$ in normal year (2000, 1257.3 mm) because the year has the highest rain intensity (241.3 mm/hr) among the test years. The runoff volume of a dry season and a wet season (May - September) in normal year 2000 increased $4.4\;\%$ and decreased $8.1\;\%$, respectively.
It has been researched the relationship between deposition velocity and factors which could affect the deposition phenomena and deposition velocity also has been estimated fer several land-use types. The typical deposition velocities are complex functions of surface types, atmospheric stabilities, friction velocities, air pollutants and so on. The canopy resistance is major contribution to the model's total resistance for O₃. Canopy wetness is also an important factor to calculate deposition velocity. We considered the canopy wetness as canopy water content(CWC) in our Model. But, it is not easy to observe CWC over each land-use types. In this study, we use CWC observed by EMEFS(CANADA Environment Service, 1988) to examine the influence of CWC in estimation of 03 dry deposition velocity(V/sub d/) in summertime. The value of O₃ V/sub d/ range 0.2 ∼ 0.7 cm s/sup -1/ on dry surface and 0.01 ∼ 0.35 cm s/sup -1/ on wet surface in daytime.
This study has been on detection of land-cover change on Korean peninsula (including the area of north Korean territory) between May of 1990 year and that of 1995 year using NOAA AVHRR data. It was necessary that imagery data should be registered to each other and should not be deviated much in seasonal variation in order to recognize land - cover change. Atmosphic effect such as clould and dirt was erased by maximum NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) method the equation of which was as following $$NDVI(i,j,d)=\frac{ch2(j,j,d)-ch1(i,j,d)}{ch2(i,j,d)+ch1(i.j,d)}$$ Each image of maximum NDVI of '90 year and '95 year was c1assifed onto 8 categories ,using iso-clustering method each of which was water, wet barren and urban, crop field, field, mixed vegetation, shrub, forest and evergreen.

Ozone is an important atmospheric pollutant that is occurred in tropospheric chemical process and it also affects the human health and plants. For a correct application of abatement strategies for ozone, it is necessary to understand the factors that control atmospheric ozone removal by dry deposition processes. The present study investigates the numerical simulation of the dry deposition velocity (V$^{d}$ ) obtained from PNU/DEM (Pusan National University Deposition Model). PNU/DEM includes seasonal categories, meteorological factors, surface properties and land-use types and proposes for an accurate numerical computation. And, this study examines the ability of the PNU/DEM to compute V$_{d}$ of ozone over water surfaces and evaluates PNU/DEM by comparing its estimated V$_{d}$ to past observed V$_{d}$ over water. The parametrization was found to yield V$_{d}$ values generally in good agreement with the observations for the deciduous forest and the coniferous forest. Ozone is removed slowly at wet surface or water due to its low water solubility. Therefore V$_{d}$ values over water were lower than Vd values over the other surfaces. Comparison of PNU/DEM simulated V d values to observations of ozone V$_{d}$ that have been reported in the literature implies that PNU/DEM produces realistic results.
Background: We sought to understand the relationship between the seed bank and vegetation in abandoned rice paddies in South Korea, in order to guide management of these sites. We investigated the floristic composition and species richness of the soil seed bank and ground vegetation in former paddies along three seral gradients (wet meadow, young forest, and mature forest) in Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve. Results: Seed bank samples contained 59 species, of which the dominant families were Cyperaceae, Gramineae, and Polygonaceae. Species richness and seedling density (59 taxa and 19,121 germinants from all samples) were high. Carex spp. (11, 921 germinants) were the dominant taxa. The species composition in the seed bank changed gradually as the land transitioned from wet meadow to mature forest. Sørensen's index of similarity between above- and below-ground vegetation was 29.3% for wet meadow, 10.8% for young forest, and 2.1% for mature forest. Germinant density also declined, with 10, 256 germinants for wet meadow, 6445 germinants for young forest, and 2420 germinants for mature forest. Conclusions: Changes in aboveground environment and life history traits such as amphicarpic plants, likely affect the composition of soil seed bank species. Abandoned paddy fields may be good sites for restoration of wetland forest and conservation of wetland habitat. Some intervention may be required to promote the recovery of a natural species assemblage.

Unpaved forest roads are common accessways in mountain areas being used for forestry purposes. The presence of forest roads produces large volumes of surface runoff and sediment yield due to changes in soil properties and hillslope profile. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to estimate the impacts of above-ground vegetation and antecedent soil water condition on hydrology and sediment processes. A total of 9 small plots($1m{\times}0.5m$) were installed to represent different road surface conditions: no-vegetation(3 plots), vegetated surface(3 plots), and cleared vegetation surface(3 plots). Experiments were carried out on dry, wet, and very wet soil moisture conditions for each plot. Above ground parts of vegetation on road surface influenced significantly on surface runoff. Runoff from no-vegetation roads(39.24L) was greater than that from vegetated(25.05L), while cleared-vegetation condition is similar to no-vegetation roads(39.72L). Runoff rate responded in a similar way to runoff volume. Soil erosion was also controlled by land cover, but the magnitude is little than that of surface runoff. Even though slight differences among antecedent soil moisture conditions were found on both runoff and soil erosion, runoff rate and soil losses were increased in very wet condition, followed by wet condition. The experiments suggest that vegetation cover on forest road surface seems most effective way to reduce surface runoff and soil erosion during storm periods.
In this study, the annual and monthly groundwater recharge for the Sapgyo-cheon upstream basin in Chungnam Province was evaluated by water balance analysis utilizing WetSpass-M model. The modeling input data such as topography, climate parameters, LAI (Leaf Area Index), land use, and soil characteristics were established using ArcGIS, QGIS, and Python programs. The results showed that the annual average groundwater recharge in 2001 - 2020 was 251 mm, while the monthly groundwater recharge significantly varied over time, fluctuating between 1 and 47 mm. The variation was high in summer, and relatively low in winter. Variation in groundwater recharge was the largest in July in which precipitation was heavily concentrated, and the variation was closely associated with several factors including the total amount of precipitation, the number of days of the precipitation, and the daily average precipitation. This suggests the extent of groundwater recharge is greatly influenced not only by quantity of precipitation but also the precipitation pattern. Since climate condition has a profound effect on the monthly groundwater recharge, evaluation of monthly groundwater recharge need to be carried out by considering both seasonal and regional variability for better groundwater usage and management. In addition, the mathematical tools for groundwater recharge analysis need to be improved for more accurate prediction of groundwater recharge.
Potential maximum soil moisture retention (S) is a dominant parameter in the Soil Conservation Service (SCS; now called the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)) runoff Curve Number (CN) method commonly used in hydrologic modeling for event-based flood forecasting (SCS, 1985). Physically, S represents the depth [L] soil could store water through infiltration. The depth of soil moisture retention will vary depending on infiltration from previous rainfall events; an adjustment is usually made using a factor for Antecedent Moisture Conditions (AMCs). Application of the method for continuous simulation of multiple storms has typically involved updating the AMC and S. However, these studies have focused on a time step where S is allowed to vary at daily or longer time scales. While useful for hydrologic events that span multiple days, this temporal resolution is too coarse for short-term applications such as flash flood events. In this study, an approach for deriving a time-variable potential maximum soil moisture retention curve (S-curve) at hourly time-scales is presented. The methodology is applied to the Napa River basin, California. Rainfall events from 2011 to 2012 are used for estimating the event-based S. As a result, we derive an S-curve which is classified into three sections depending on the recovery rate of S for soil moisture conditions ranging from 1) dry, 2) transitional from dry to wet, and 3) wet. The first section is described as gradually increasing recovering S (0.97 mm/hr or 23.28 mm/day), the second section is described as steeply recovering S (2.11 mm/hr or 50.64 mm/day) and the third section is described as gradually decreasing recovery (0.34 mm/hr or 8.16 mm/day). Using the S-curve, we can estimate the hourly change of soil moisture content according to the time duration after rainfall cessation, which is then used to estimate direct runoff for a continuous simulation for flood forecasting.
