  • In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of wet soil concrete according to the addition ratio of liquefaction red mud addition rate by liquefying red mud. as a result, the compressive strength decreased and the water absorption ratio increased as the liquefaction red mud addition rate increased.

  • The Construction policy of government ever since 1970s have brought the economical growth, but has been causing environmental problems. Most roads were paved either asphalt concrete or portland cement concrete. These types of pavements has caused to rise temperature by making local heat islands in urban during summer time. Recently the wet-mixing solidified soil pavement, a kind of soil-cement, has developed and has been applied to the environment-oriented pavement. The solidified soil wet-mixed is placed on the subgrade along with asphalt concrete and portland cement concrete. Thermistors are laid in these field test pavements. The temperature gradients of these pavements are automatically measured with time. As the results of this test, the equation estimating surface temperature of pavement is proposed by analyzing measured temperature data. It is shown that the temperature change within the surface layer due to the change of air temperature is the greatest in the asphalt mixture and the least in the solidified soil mixture. Since it is proven that this wet-mixing solidified soil pavement emit less radiant heat than other existed pavements. Therefore this type of pavement can be successfully applied to the roads, such as walks, parkways, and bikeways, which are required to be human-friendly and environment-oriented.

  • Recently, the study for practical construction application no recycled aggregate concrete is actively being proceeded, on the purpose of technical development for recycling on the construction waste concrete occurred at the time of destruction of building construction by the rapid increase of building wastes and exhaustion of natural aggregates. But, the durability of investigation with all sorts of fluidity and engineering property for application recycled aggregate concrete to practical construction must be done at the same time. Especially, because of the real condition for chemical attack of concrete construction by the acid rain, acidification of soil, deepening of air pollution and dirty water etc. being come to the fore a serious problem, the study on the chemical soundness of concrete durability must be accompanied. This study is composed as: I series: Analysis for chemical soundness of aggregates. II series: Analysis for chemical soundness of natural and recycled aggregate concrete against $Na_2$$SO_4$ solution in drying and wet curing condition ($at20~80^{\circ}C$).

  • During the carbonation process in concrete, the rate of carbonation depends on porosity and moisture content of the concrete. For underground reinforced concrete structures, the interior concrete surface may be exposed to carbonation and the exterior concrete surface exposed to moisture due to wet soil or underground water. In this study, the permeability coefficients in mortar partially carbonated is derived as a function of carbonation depth and porosity of mortar by applying the so-called micro pore structure formation model (MPSFM) which was developed for the modeling of early-aged concrete. The permeability coefficient obtained from the micro-level modeling of carbonated mortar is verified with the results of accelerated carbonation test and water penetration test in cement mortar.

Study on engineering properties of xanthan gum reinforced kaolinite

  • The strengthening efficiency of biopolymer treated soil depends on biopolymer type, concentration ratio, soil type, initial water content, curing time and mixing method. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of xanthan gum (XG) treated kaolinite were investigated through compaction test, Atterberg limit test, triaxial test and unconfined compression test. The results indicated that the optimum water content (OWC) increased from 30.3% of untreated clay to 33.5% of 5% XG treated clay, while the maximum dry density has a slight increase from 13.96 kg/m3 to 14 kg/m3 of 0.2% XG treated clay and decrease to 2.7 kg/m3 of 5% XG treated clay. Meanwhile, the plastic limit of XG treated clay increased with the increase of XG concentration, while 0.5% XG treated clay can be observed the maximum liquid limit with 79.5%. Moreover, there are the ideal water content about 1.3-1.5 times of the optimum water content achieving the maximum dry density and curing time to obtain the maximum compressive strength for different XG contents, which the UCS is 1.52 and 2.07 times of the maximum UCS of untreated soil for 0.5% and 1% XG treated clay, respectively. In addition, hot-dry mixing can achieve highest UCS than other mixing methods (e.g., dry mixing, wet mixing and hot-wet mixing).

  • Lately, cement mixed siliceous powder waterproofing coating has been used as a waterproofing material in the wet environment condition of an underground concrete structure. Underground is exposed to environmental influences such as pressure of ground water, pressure of soil. However, the quality standard for pressure (water pressure, earth pressure) is not specified in the specification of the cement mixed siliceous powder waterproofing coating. Therefore, in this study, the permeability test was carried out based on the assumption that the durability should be verified in consideration of the environmental aspects of the material in actual field. As a result of the test, the permeability was generated from the inorganic single type material, but it was caused by the sealing failure and the test error, and the permeability was not generated in most of the materials. The results of this study will be analyzed by reviewing the physical properties of the material, and the research direction will be resumed.

Utilization of Vitrified Glass as an Aggregate Source in Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

  • Abstract Over 4.1 billion tons of non-hazardous solid wastes are generated in the United States annually. This equals to about 16 tons of wastes per person, per year. Disposal of the wastes is a national concern due to many factors such as environmental issues, costs, and public views. South Carolina, like many other states, had a home of many military bases which were ordered to be closed. The contaminated soil was vitrified and tested for suitability in the asphalt mixes. For mix design purposes, a total of 75 specimens were made and tested. For moisture susceptibility testing, a total of 32 samples were made and tested. The results indicate that the mixtures made with sample B produced dry and wet that were comparable with the controlled mixture. At this point and with in this limited study, use of 5% of sample B in asphalt mixture is recommended in several applications such as parking lots, walking paths and drive ways.

  • This study was intended to identify the effect of the wetting on a long-term compression settlement of the rock/soil mixture used as fill material, depending on compaction and grading conditions. The relatively large settlement happened under the fully-submerged condition, and a repeated settlement was monitored when moisture content increased over and over again like the rainfall infiltration. In case of the materials without fine fractions or compacted in wet condition, the settlement caused by wetting was relatively low. In conclusion, the long-term compression settlement of granular (rock/soil mixture) fill material is more affected by the increase of water content and temperature change (freezing and thawing) than creep.

Studies on the Exchangeable Potassium of Paddy Soil and it's Activity Ratio to Other Cations (논토양의 치환성(置換性)칼륨 함량(含量)과 다른 양(陽)이온에 대한 칼륨의 활동량비(活動量比)에 관한 연구)

  • In order to obtain an imformation on the exchangeable potassium and it's activity ratio to other cations in wet paddy top soil grown by rice, soil samples were taken from bottomless middle size (60cm in dia, and height, respectively) round concrete pot being car ride out with an experiment on the split application of potassium in relation to lime and analysed. The pot experiment was being conducted from 1974 at a farm of the City University of Seoul and the wet soil samples were taken from the paddy in the year of 1976. The samples were extracted with $0.1N-AlCl_3$ solution and analysed regarding the elements. Results obtained are as follows : 1. Less exchangeable potassium was extracted from the soils limed than those unlimed when the same amount of potassium was applied immediatly after flooding. However, when the Potassium was applied two weeks after flooding, the reverse was observed. The fact that the exchangeable potassium is increased in the case that potassium fertilizer applied two weeks after flooding explained as due either to the prohibiting effect of iron or less abserption of potassium by the crop. 2. A remarkable decrease of exchangeable potassium of soils was observed during the vigorous growth stage of rice. 3. The activity ratio of $\frac{K}{(Fe^{{+}{+}}){\frac{1}{2}}}$ was remarkabley low after July 16th at which the soil was considerably reduced. 4. The activity ratio $\frac{K^+}{NH^+}$ of limed soil lasted highly until July 16th. It may be resulted from slow progress of ammonification caused by high pH. 5. A positive correlation was found between $Fe^{{+}{+}}$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ under reduced condition. But there was no correlation between $Fe^{{+}{+}}$ and $K^+$ or $NH^+_4$, because that the concentrations of $K^+$ and $NH^+_4$ in soil fluctuates during growing season.

The Influence of Landscape Pavements on the WBGT of Outdoor Spaces without Ventilation or Shade at Summer Midday (조경포장이 옥외공간의 온열쾌적성지수(WBGT)에 미치는 영향 - 통풍과 차광이 배제된 하절기 주간의 조건에서 -)

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of landscaping pavements on WBGT(Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature) of outdoor spaces that lack ventilation and shade at summer midday. The relative humidity(RH), dry-bulb temperature(DT) and globe temperature(GT) were recorded every minute from June to October 2009 at a height of 1.2m above ten experimental beds with different pavements, by a measuring system consisting of an electric humidity sensor(GHM-15), resistance temperature detector(RTD, Pt-100), standard black globe(${\phi} 150mm$) and data acquisition systems(National Instrument's Labview and Compact FieldPoint). Additionally, the surface dry-bulb temperatures also were recorded and compared. The area of each experimental bed was 1.5m(W)${\times}$2.0m(L) and ten different kinds of pavement were used including grass, grass+cubic stone, grass+porous brick, brick, stone panels, cubic stone, interlocking blocks, clay brick, naked soil, gravel and concrete. To prevent interference from ventilation, a 1.5m height cubic steel frame was established around each bed and each vertical side of the frame was covered with transparent polyethylene film. Based on the records of the hottest period from noon to 3 PM on 26 days with a peak dry-bulb temperature over $30^{\circ}C$ at natural condition, the wet-bulb temperature(WT) and WBGT were calculated and compared. The major findings were as follows: 1. The average surface DT was $40.1^{\circ}C$, which is $9^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the natural condition. The surface DT of the pavements with grass were higher than those of concrete and interlocking block. The peak DT of the surface almost every pavement rose to above $50^{\circ}C$ during the hottest time. 2. The averages of DT, WT and GT were $40.1^{\circ}C$, $27.5^{\circ}C$ and $49.1^{\circ}C$, and the peak values rose to $48.1^{\circ}C$, $45.8^{\circ}C$ and $59.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. In spite of slight differences that resulted according to pavements, no coherent differentiating factor could be found. 3. The average WBGT of grass was the highest at $34.3^{\circ}C$ while the others were similar in the range of around $33{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, the peak WBGT was highest with stone panel at $47.9^{\circ}C$. Though there were some differences according to pavements, and while grass seemed to be worst in terms of WBGT, it seems difficult to say ablolutely that grass was the worst because the measurement was conducted without ventilation and shade during summer daytime hours only, which had temperatures that rose to a dangerous degree(above $45^{\circ}C$ WBGT), withering the grass during the hottest period. The average WBGT resulted also showed that the thermal environment of the pavement without ventilation and shade were at an intolerable level for humans regardless of the pavement type. In summary, the results of this study show that ventilation and shade are more important factor than pavement type in terms of outdoor thermal comfort in summer daylight hours.
