Nickel recovered from the spent oil-hydrogenation catalysts was used in hydrogenation catalyst preparation. The spent catalyst contains approximately 21.8% Ni, 0.7% Mg, and small quantities of Al, Fe, and Zn. Nickel recovery was obtained by inorganic acid digestion in the order of HCI>$NHO_3$>$H_2SO_4$. For $HNO_3$, 3hour extraction with 3N solution was satisfactory. In the PH range of 6.5~9.0, Ni recovery was higher, but metallic impurities were found to be coprecipitated. The PH in the range of 7.0~9.0 seems to be the optimum condition for separation to obtain acceptable Ni precipitates without the decrease of purity. The catalysts prepared with reclaimed nickel by wet reduction methods showed catalytic activities close to those prepared using reagent nickel in the oil hydrogenation reaction. The surface areas of the support do not seem to affect the catalytic activity.
Fructooligosaccharide-inulin(FOSI) separated from Jerusalem artichoke-autolysate was tested to determine its effect on the growth of fecal microorganisms of pig. Total microorganisms in fecal samples averaged $10^{9.83}$ per g of wet feces and the numbers of predominant Bacteroidaceae and Peptococcaceae were $10^{9.3}\;and\;10^{9.2}$, respectively. Lactobacilli, Eubacteria, Clostridia were found out to be the next common bacteria. The addition of FOSI to the 'feces media' and PYF broth increased the numbers of total microorganisms and lactobacillis up to those of glucose-addition media. The number of Bifidobacteria was greater about $50{\sim}500$ times on FOSI-addition media rather than on glucose-addition media. While FOSI showed no different effect on the Clostridia growth compared with glucose, both sugars reduced the number of E. coli to $10^{-1}{\sim}10^{-3}$ level of no sugar media.
In this study, a wet impregnation method was applied to catalysts based on the active metal Pt in order to confirm the oxidation characteristics of various commercial alumina supports at room temperature. The catalysts were characterized using XPS, CO-chemisorption, and BET. Various $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalysts controlled the oxygen species of Pt by the electronegativity of electrons and charges when the catalyst was prepared according to the heat treatment conditions. The reason that the dispersion degree decreases with increasing Pt loading seems to be attributed to HT (Huttig Temperature) of Pt. In addition, the minimum hydrogen concentration that can be controlled at room temperature can control hydrogen from metallic Pt up to 1.0 vol% at over 70.09% in the catalyst.
A combustible producer gas composed of H2, CO and CH4 could be obtained by the thermal-chemical conversion of biomass. However, a large amount of particulate matters including tar generated causes the mal-function of turbines and engines or the fouling of pipelines. In this study, a wet scrubber using the soybean oil and bag filter were installed, and the removal efficiency was investigated. Hydrate limestone and wood char base activated carbon were pre-coated on the filter medium to prevent clogging of open pores. The removal efficiencies by the bag filter were 86 and 80% for the hydrated limestone and activated carbon coating, respectively. Overall, the collection when using a series of oil scrubbers and bag filters were 88%, while 83% for the filter coating material.
In order to compare their absorption abilities of carbon dioxide, Hyamine base and phenyl ethylamine were employed in wet combustion experiments. The known content of liver lipid and uniformly mixed palmitic $acid-C^{14}$ were oxidized with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Carbon dioxide produced was trapped by the amines tested through thin tube. The amines absorbed carbon dioxide were mixed with diotal scintillator and counted by liquid scintillation counter. The counting efficiencies and radioactivity recoveries were 50 to 60 % and nearly 100 % for both amines. However, the absorption ability of carbon dioxide by phenyl ethylamine was about two times that of Hyamine base. This technique would not be necessary for the counting of liver lipid of swim, because the efficiencies were not increased and counting accuracies were similar to those of direct counting.
Aromatic polyetherimide membranes were prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method and investigated regarding the pervaporation characteristic of water-alcohol mixtures by using the permselective property of imide group and the structure modification of skin layer of the membrane. The membrane selectivity increased with the reaction time of surface-modification, to some extent, and the density of top layer tends to increases with increasing the reaction time. In the case of dense membrane, the separation factor was 160 and 2000 for 90wt% ethanol mixture and 90wt% isopropanol solution, respectively, which implies that aromatic polyetherimide has a high permselectivity. The temperature dependence of permeation flux seems to follow an Arrhenius type at the temperature range of ($40^{\circ}C-70^{\circ}C$).
In this study, a catalyst based on $Pt/Al_2O_3$ supported on Mg was prepared by a wet impregnation method to investigate the $CH_4-SCR$ reaction characteristics of various alumina supports. Alumina supported on $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst was converted to an $Al_2O_3$ composite, and when Mg was added, oxygen species of the active metal Pt were controlled due to electrophobic characteristics. Oxygen-controlled Pt used as a reducing agent inhibited the oxidation of $CH_4$ to $CO_2$. The addition of Mg also promoted the adsorption of NO species and the conversion of NO to $NO_2$ due to the NOx storage property on the catalyst surface.
A series of Pt-based ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts promoted with several alkali and alkaline earth metals were prepared by a wet impregnation method. We confirmed that the addition of Na to $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ could cause a change in the oxidation state of Pt through an electronegative gap between Pt and Na atom, and increase the ratio of the metallic Pt. The metallic Pt species made by adding an optimum Na content improved the adsorption of NO species on the catalyst surface and restrained the oxidation of $CH_4$ to $CO_2$. When molar ratio of Na/Pt was 4.0, the highest catalytic activity could be obtained.
The fine particles of binary ceramic composite of titania-partially-stabilized zirconia(TPSZ) were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the various temperatures, compositions and concentrations and the effects of process factors for synthesis on the characteristics of fine particles were discussed. The starting salt solutions were prepared to have the ionic concentrations of 0.025~0.1 M aqueous solutions. The fine particles were prepared to have the compositions of 90~97.5 wt% of $ZrO_2$ and 2.5~10 wt% of $TiO_2$. The temperatures for particle synthesis were regulated to be 400~550$^{\circ}C$ as a drying zone, 800~1100$^{\circ}C$ as a pyrolysis zone. The produced fine particles were collected by a wet process and analyzed to investigate characteristic properties after being dried. The compositions of ceramic fine particles were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy(ICP-AES) technique and phases, morphologies and particle sizes of those were investigated by Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) and Particle Size Analyzer(PSA) techniques.

A smog chamber has been an effective tool to study air quality, particularly secondary organic aerosol (SOA), which is typically formed by atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In controlled environments, smog chamber studies have validated atmospheric oxidation by identifying, quantifying and monitoring products with state-of-art instruments (e.g., aerosol mass spectrometer, scanning mobility particle sizer) and provided chemical insights of SOA formation by elucidating reaction mechanisms. This paper reviews types of smog chambers and the current state of smog chamber studies that have accomplished to find pathways of SOA formation, focusing on gas-particle partitioning of semivolatile products of VOC oxidation, heterogeneous reactions on aerosol surface, and aqueous chemistry in aerosol waters (e.g., cloud/fog droplets and wet aerosols). For future chamber studies, then, this paper discusses potential formation pathways of fine particles that East Asia countries (e.g., Korea and China) currently suffer from due to massive formation that gives rise to fatal health problems.
