According to 2004 health statistics yearbook, cancer ocupies second death reason next to disease of blood circulation system and 1/4 was died because of cancer. There are very many factors to onset cancer, for example the exposure to varius kinds of pollution materials by development of industry, excess intake of harmful food to one's health, spritual stress, as become old age society, increase of attack-rate of geriatric diseases etc, attack-rate of cancer comes to be high gradually. The author had study about to treatment cancer by TCM(traditional chinese medicine) and combining TCM & western medicine, in Guang An Men hospital in Beijing of China from February 2003 to January 2004. TCM papers are 105 and combining TCM & western medicine papers are 280 of total 385 papers. Clinical reserch papers are 166, review articles are 194, animal experimental papers are 25. The papers used development herbal medicine are 42(10.9%), the papers used undevelopment herbal medicineare are 228(59.2%), the papers used senior TCM doctor's therapeutic experience and theory are 17(4.4%), the papers used theory of TCM or theory of combining TCM & western medicine are 71 (18.4%), the papers used acupuncture, qigong, thermotherapy, etc, other methods are 5, the papers used TCM patient's care or dietary treatment are 12 and ststistical papers are 10. Cancer is complicated hard case disease in pathological process. Combining TCM & western medicine treatment system is more efficient than one of TCM or western medicine in diagnosis, treatment, reserch of cancer.
1. The Pung(風) is the necessary power for growth and maintenance of life. 2. The characteristics of the Pung(風) is the Yang evil, the features for opening and excretion, mobility and rapid change. That is the major cause of all diseases, and its mobility is the main character. 3. Jung Pung(中風) is the same concept of apoplexy in Western medicine. 4. Jung Pung(中風) is classified on the basis of pathology, anatomy, and histology in Western Medicine, but In Oriental Medicine that is classified on the basis of symptom and severity of disease. 5. In Western Medicine, Jung Pung(中風) was regarded as the local cause of disease, but in Oriental Medicine regarded as the physiological changes caused by the weakness of the whole body. 6. In the emergency care, the method of GaeKeum is compared to Levin tubing, the method of to the use of urokinase for the promotion of cerebrovascular circulatio, and the method of To(吐法) to suction for the elimination of Dam(痰), the method of Hun(熏法) to the use of solution for the improvement of circulation. 7. With the comparison of the cause and diagnosis, the hemorrhagic disease and infarction were regarded as the major agents in Western Medicine and the symptom appeared in the patient was the standard of diagnosis and therapy in Oriental Medicine. 8. In the Western therapy of cerebral hemorrhage, the method of coagulation and hemostasis was used for the elimination of hematoma and cerebral edema, but in Oriental Medicine, the method of YanghaelGiHael(凉血止血) was used for descending the PungHwa(風火) and hemostasis. 9. In the period of recovering injury, the physical therapy was underlined for the recovering of partial function in Western Medicine, the method of accupuncture and drug therapy was adapted for the normal function of the whole body.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of patients with facial palsy symptoms treated with Korean medicine treatment(KMT) after western treatment. Methods : We conducted an individual in-depth interview with 10 participants who had experience in both western and KMT for facial palsy symptoms. This qualitative study adopted the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin, and collected data was analyzed by using coding(open-axial-selective) that was performed to create paradigm model, which can explain this study's main theme. Results : The central phenomenon of this study was 'choosing Korean medicine treatment after western treatment preceded', and the core category was derived as 'selecting process of KMT after western medical treatment and improvement plan of Korean medicine treatment'. Conclusions : For patients with facial palsy, KMT was perceived as an essential treatment rather than an alternative, and recognized as the main treatment. Patients didn't settle for western treatment which was in progress, actively selected KMT and suggested the specific plan for improvement of KMT. Through this, we should be considered the direction of the KMT for facial palsy symptom which is the common disease of KMT.

Cough is a common symptom of several respiratory diseases. However, frequent coughing from acute to chronic often causes great pain to patients. It may turn into cough variant asthma, which seriously affects people's quality of life. For cough treatment, it is dominated by over-the-counter antitussive drugs, such as asmeton, but most currently available antitussive drugs have serious side effects. Thus, there is a great need for the development of new drugs with potent cough suppressant. BALB/c mice were used to construct mice model with cough to investigate the pharmacological effects of pectolinarigenin (PEC). Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson staining were used to assess lung injury and airway remodeling, and ELISA was used to assess the level of inflammatory factor release. In addition, inflammatory cell counts were measured to assess airway inflammation. Airway hyperresponsiveness assay was used to assess respiratory resistance in mice. Finally, we used Western blotting to explore the potential mechanisms of PEC. We found that PEC could alleviate lung tissue injury and reduce the release of inflammatory factors, inhibit of cough frequency and airway wall collagen deposition in mice model with cough. Meanwhile, PEC inhibited the Ras/ERK/c-Fos pathway to exhibit antitussive effect. Therefore, PEC may be a potential drug for cough suppression.

Objective This case study was about a long-term clinical effects after using Korean medicine treatment and western treatment in three Soyangin patients with Parkinson's disease. In this study, we reported significant improvement of non-motor and motor symptoms of these patients after Sasang constitutional medicine treatments for more than a year. Method The patients were identified as Soyangin and treated with Yangguksanhwa-tang, Hyeongbangdojeok-san and acupuncture. The Hoehn & Yahr scale, Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) were used to assess the overall function of the patients. And the Global Assessment Scale (GAS) was used to assess the change of chief complaints after the treatments. Result and Conclusion The non-motor and motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease improved after Sasang constitutional medicine and western medicine treatments for more than a year. Furthermore these patients' chief complaints improved without increasing of amount of western medicine (levodopa). In conclusion, this study showed that Sasang constitutional medicine with western medicine can be effective treatment for long-term clinical care of Parkinson's disease.
The purpose of this study is to examine the recognition of the student of oriental medical school on cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine and to provide basic information for the development of oriental medicine. In order to look at the level of recognition on cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine, from September 1st to 15th of 2005, this study had been conducted through personal interview and questionnaires to 600 students who were attending the Department of Oriental Medicine (in both prep and regular courses) in D University, located in the City of Daegu. The data has been analyzed using statistic program, the SPSS WIN 12.0. Statistical analysis tools used for this study were frequency analysis, cross-over analysis and the t-test. The results are as follows; The students of oriental medical school had relatively high level of recognition on the basic concept, interests, necessity and potential for cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine. However, they had negative understandings on the issue of unification of the two medical systems and it's possibility in the future. The students were optimistic about possible merits of cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine, especially in the field of rehabilitation. On the reasons for lack of development of cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine, the students listed prejudices existing on both sides firstly, followed by their contrasting approach on human illness, lack of legal and institutional support system, the indifferences of doctors and indifferences of oriental medical doctors. In addition, students understood that the dualism existing in our current medical system is aggravating mutual distrust between the two sides, causing the confusion of patients on the choice of medical facilities, and raising their medical bills. Therefore, in order to vitalize collaboration between Oriental and Western medicine in new health care environment, the following measures should be needed decreasing the prejudices between the two medical spheres with open mind improving educational programs in Western and Oriental medical schools; promoting joint academic research or exchange programs between the schools, and increasing government effort to minimize legal and institutional restrictions cooperative system between Oriental and Western medicine.
Objectives: We compared research characteristics of western medicine, Chinese medicine and Korean medicine on causes, mechanisms, types, treatments and prevention of psoriasis. Methods: For western medicine, "Psoriasis" was used as keyword on Pubmed, for Chinese medicine, "銀屑病" and "中医" on CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure" and for Korean medicine, "건선" on OASIS. Keyword searches were done for papers and books published after 2010. For Chinese medicine, there were more in-depth searches done for "從血論 (血熱, 血瘀, 血燥)" and "陽虛症". Results: Western medicine puts an emphasis on the foci, and approaches it from molecular and genetic levels based on molecular biology; while it views psoriasis as a disease with multiple possible causes, it ultimately sees it as an inflammation that is immunity-mediated. Western medicine seeks to suppress cytokine in order to prevent and eliminate inflammation at each stage of treatment While they are effective short-term, psoriasis recurs shortly after. Chinese and Korean medicines categorize psoriasis as an internal comprehensive systemic diseases that encompasses the patient's physical and mental characteristics, and defines it as a disease that has many causes and mechanisms such as "血熱, 血瘀, 血燥" and "陽虛". They use herbal medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle interventions to improve the overall health of the patient in addition to treating psoriasis. Treatments are effective, but it takes relatively longer to see results, and can recur. Conclusion: In order for more progress to happen on psoriasis treatment, each branch of medicine must exchange knowledge and information more frequently.
Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of combination treatment of herbal medicine for external use and western medicine for atopic dermatitis (AD). Methods: We searched randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which assess the effect of combination treatment of herbal and western medicine for AD through 8 electronic databases from the start to December 2022. The data synthesis was conducted by using Review Manager (RevMan, ver.5.4.1) and Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. Results: 13 RCTs were included. The combination treatment group had significantly higher total efficacy rate(p<0.0001) and lower SCORAD score (p<0.00001) than the western medicine treatment group. The adverse event rate was also significantly lower in the combination treatment than the western medicine treatment group (p<0.0001). But there was no significant difference in recurrence rate (p=0.09). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the combination treatment of herbal and western medicine could be safe and effective for AD. However, due to limits of included studies such as high heterogeneity between the literature and unclear risk of bias, further studies are warranted.
