Experiments were conducted to obtain information on separation of nonviable seeds from seed lots by the nondestructive ways. Seeds of sesame, welsh onion and lettuce were artificially aged at 90% relative humidity and 45$^{\circ}C$ to get different seed qualities. The relationships between seed quality and leakage of total sugars, amino acids, and proteins into soaking water were determined to know a possibility of grading seeds. Dead seeds of lettuce leaked significant amounts of total sugars, amino acids, and proteins, while high quality seeds leaked negligeable amounts of total sugars and some of amino acids and proteins. Dead seeds of welsh onion leaked significant amounts of amino acids and some total sugars and proteins, while high quality seeds leaked negligeable amounts of these compounds. Sesame seeds leaked little total sugars, amino acids, and proteins regardless of seed quality.
Crude extracts of 4 Allium SPP. such as welsh onion, onion, chinese chives and garlic were purified by paper chromatography and these activities were bio-assayed with rice seedlings. The stem and leaf slices of Allium spp. were treated and rice seedlings were planted in the soil to know the effect of its application on rice growth. The weak acidic fraction of Allium SPP. enhanced the growth and rooting of rice seedlings and had greater activity in promoting than in inhibiting the growth on rice seedling. Elongation of the second leaf sheath of the rice seedlings were not influenced by the extracts of Allium SPP. The stem and leaf application 10 days before transplanting, increased the number of effective tiller remarkably. Especially, the application of 50~400g welsh onion and 50~200g onions increased the number of spikelets per panicle compared to standard fertilization. But, in application of larger amounts, the-death rate of the rice seedlings after transplanting was higher in the stem and leaf application 10 days before transplanting than the one applied on the transplanting day. In particular, treatments of chinese chives and garlic showed higher death rate than those of welsh onion or onion. The stem and leaf application of Allium SPP. resulted in high yield than standard fertilization.
This study was carried out to select new pelleting binder and material for Welsh onion seeds. The optimum treatments of the various plant growth regulators to improve seed germination of the Welsh onion was also estimated. There were no significant effects of growth regulators on the germination percentage, but germination was faster according to the number of days to 50% of the final germination ($T_{50}$) and the mean number of days to germination (MDG) than those of the control. Germinability was increased when the seeds were soaked in gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) solution for 24hrs, even though there was no synergy effect on the germinability when $GA_3$ was mixed with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The optimum treatment for improving germination of Welsh onion was observed when the tested seeds was soaked in 500 $\mu$M of $GA_3$ at $20^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. Also, when the seeds soaked in the aforementioned treatment, the rate of germination was increased at lower temperature than at $20^{\circ}C$, the optimal temperature. The percentage and the speed of seed germination depended on the kinds of pelleting binder and their concentration. It showed that the higher the concentration of the binder for seeds pelleting, the lower the percentage of seed germination. Among the pelleting binder, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were the best binders for seed pelleting, because seed germination using those binder did not affect on the concentration of binder. On the other hand, Carboxymethy cellulose (CMC) and methyl cellulose (MC) severely inhibited the seed germination The germinability was also different arcording to the pelleting materials. Among the different 58 pelleting materials, kaoline alone, the mixture of bentonite and kaoline, the mixture of bentonite, calcium carbonate and diatomaceous earth #300 were found as the best pelleting materials for welsh onion seeds.
The objective of this study was conducted for elucidation of effects of the NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N. NH$_4$$^{+}$-N ratio in the nutrient solution on the growth and quality of welsh onion(Allium fistulosum L.). The pH of nutrient solution increased in NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N : NH$_4$$^{+}$-N ratio of 9 : 1 treatment, decreased in 1 : 1, 1 : 3 treatment, but was stable in 3 : 1 treatment during cultivation. The apparent growth of welsh onion was best in the treatment of 9 : 1(NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N : NH$_4$$^{+}$-N ratio), however the treatment of 1 : 3 resulted in poor growth. The NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N content of the plants increased in proportion to that content of nutrient solution. Pyruvic acid content of welsh onion was highest at 9 : 1, 3 : 1 treatment, and lowest at 1 : 3 treatment.tment.

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate optimal ionic concentration of nutrient solution for water culture of young welsh onion (Allium fistulosum). For the purpose of clarification of optimal nutrient concentration to maximize growth of young welsh onion, different nutrient concentrations of Yamazaki's solution for welsh onion seedling $(NO_3^--N\;9.0,\;NH_4^+-N\;3.0,\;PO_4^{3-}-P\;6.0,\;K^+7.0,\;Ca^{2+}\;2.0,\;Mg^{2+}\;2.0,\;and\;SO_4^{2-}-S\;4.4me{\cdot}L^{-1})$ which selected by prior experiment were treated as 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Increments of fresh weight, dry weight and top length were the highest in 1.2 and, in the next, were placed by the order of 1.8, 2.4, and $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ The regression coefficients for the maximal growth of fresh weight of cv. 'Geurnjanguedaepa' and 'Tokyokuro' were $y=-42.091x^2+171.79x+11.047 (R^2=0.8946,\; R=0.9458^*)\;and\;y=-50.069x2+157.58x+15.414(R^2=0.9343,\;R=0.9692^{**})$, respectively, and optimal EC levels according to regression coefficients were 1.68 and $1.57dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. As the conclusions, optimal nutrient levels far young welsh onion were $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ EC in the early growth stage and $1.6\~l .7dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the later growth stage.
In this study, we set an optimum blanching condition as a pretreatment condition to freeze welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) for the purpose of preserving the cooking material for long-term usage. With higher blanching temperature and longer processing time, the Hunter color values and the hardness of welsh onion tended to decrease, which confirmed softening of the tissue. Compared to before blanching, total bacterial counts decreased to near 2 log scale, whereas coliforms were not detected or decreased to a 1-2 log scale. Blanching by heating at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 5 min decreased peroxidase inactivity to more than 94%, whereas only 47% of the inactivity was achieved at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 1 min. The sensory evaluation for the blanched and defrosted welsh onion showed that the group blanched at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 1 min was preferred significantly (p<0.05).
This study was conducted to assess the possibility of preserving frozen vegetables (Aster scaber, soybean sprouts, Chinese cabbage, green pumpkin, and Welsh onion) for a long period and of using them after such storage by measuring changes in quality due to their preservation. Various freshly harvested vegetables were blanched under optimal conditions (that were determined in a preliminary experiment), quick-frozen at $-40^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, and stored at $-20^{\circ}C$. The change in the chromaticity of the frozen A. scaber, soybean sprouts, Chinese cabbage, green pumpkin, and Welsh onion did not vary. The hardness of the frozen A. scaber, green pumpkin, Chinese cabbage and Welsh onion did not change during the preservation period, whereas the hardness of the cotyledon and hypocotyl of the soybean sprouts significantly increased on the sixth month of their storage. The total bacterial counts of the A. scaber during the preservation period remained constant at $10^3$ CFU/g, whereas those of soybean sprouts, Chinese cabbage, green pumpkin, and Welsh onion decreased slightly to $10^2$ CFU/g. Coliform was not detected in any of the samples. The sensory evaluation showed that the preservation period that was used in this study did not significantly affect the marketability of the frozen vegetables. Therefore, it was considered that A. scaber, soybean sprouts, Chinese cabbage, green pumpkin, and Welsh onion can be safely preserved by freeze-storing them for up to 12 months.

Control thresholds for the management of beet army worm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) were evaluated on welsh onion of two different planting time. Two inoculation times were tested for each planting and the number of inoculated larva was 5, 10, 20, 40 per twenty plants. The injured rate of leaves was 33.5% to 10.9% at 7th September at 40 to 5 larva inoculation plot on the five days planting. That of leaves was 20.5% at 40 larva on the twenty days planting. The yields of welsh onion on non-inoculation plot were 4,395 kg per 10a. The rate of reduced yields was 49.2%(1,774.2 kg) and 36.5%(2,220.5 kg) at 40 larva inoculation on the 5 and 20 days planting, respectively. The linear relationships between population density and yield reduction were as following; it was Y=-43.474X + 3419.6 ($R^2\;=\;0.9698$) for 5 days and Y=-32.977X + 3518.9 ($R^2\;=\;0.9928$) for 20 days. Based on these results the control threshold level was estimated to be 1.8 larva for 5 days and 4.6 larva for 20 days per 20 plant. The more damaged leaves by S. exigua larva, the more yield reduction on welsh onion.

Leaf blight disease caused by Stemphylium species is an important disease in Allium crops, specifically onion, garlic and welsh onion. In 2018, leaf blight symptoms were severe and damaged onion and garlic in Jeonnam province in Korea. In addition, small purple spots on garlic burbs were observed in a post-harvest storage warehouse. Several Stemphylium isolates were isolated from diseased leaves from the field and from garlic bulb samples and were analyzed in terms of homology and the phylogenetic relationship based on the internal transcribed spacer region and calmodulin gene sequence. The results showed that among three Stemphylium species identified, S. vesicarium is most prevalent on onion and garlic. S. eturmiunum was for the first time identified as pathogenic to onion and garlic, whereas S. solani was found in welsh onion crops. Although these isolates grew well at the optimum temperature at 20 - 25℃, they could also grow at low temperatures of 10 - 15℃. A pathogenicity test was conducted using S. vesicarium and S. eturmiunum on onion and garlic respectively. These results showed that two Stemphylium species were highly virulent with cross pathogenicity in onion and garlic. The results of this study can support the biological characterization of Stemphylium species in Korea. Moreover, further research will need to develop fungicide application strategies for onion and garlic crops.
