This study is performed to check the three dimensional characteristics of residual stress in the dissimilar metal weld. Although two dimensional analysis has been widely used for the assessment of weld residual stress, it has limitations to understand the stress distribution of the third direction. 3-D analysis was done to understand residual stress distribution of the welded plate. A simple butt-welded plate was considered to show the stress variation on all direction. A mock-up plate weldment was fabricated with SA-508 and F316L, which are widely used in nuclear power plants. The analysis results were validated with the measured values in the mock-up.

Study of Weldment fracture behavior mcludes thermal analysis, residual stress analysis, and fracture analysis The 1-integral loses its path-independency in a res~dual stress field Therefore, it id necessary to develop a program to calculate the J-integral in a welded plate. m this study, theoretical formulation and program were developed for the evaluation of the 1-integral at the crack tip o i weldments. To verify equations and program, welded thin plate and thick plate were used to calculate residual stress and the J-integral.

In nuclear power plants, ferritic low alloy steel components were connected with austenitic stainless steel piping system through alloy 82/182 butt weld. There have been incidents recently where cracking has been observed in the dissimilar metal weld. Alloy 82/182 is susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking. Weld-induced residual stress is main factor for crack growth. Therefore exact estimation of residual stress is important for reliable operating. This paper presents residual stress computation performed by 6" safety & relief nozzle. Based on 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional finite element analyses, effect of welding variables on residual stress variation is estimated for sensitivity analysis.
This paper consists of two parts. One is finite element analysis of the redistribution of residual stresses of weld specimen by cutting. This work is necessary to predict the actual residual stress distribution of weld specimens used in fatigue test. The other subject is to calculate the relaxation of residual stress and the strain field induced by cyclic loading. To obtain fatigue life of weldment, the value of strain amplitude at each position is necessary, for example in the strain-life approach, and the numerical results can be used to verify experimental strain measurements. Thermo mechanical finite element analyses were conducted on the commercial package ABAQUS.
To investigate the suitability of nitrogen gas as an internal purging gas, various properties of GTA welded joints of duplex, 316L stainless steel, Cu-Ni alloy pipe using nitrogen purging gas were evaluated with reference to onew purged with argon gas. Mechanical properties evaluated by the tensile, bending test, and hardness value of welded joints with nitrogen gas purging did not show any difference those with argon gas. General and local corrosion rates of each welded joint prepared by nitrogen gas purging also showed no difference with those prepared by argon gas. Based on the present test results it is confirmed that nitrogen is a suitable purging gas for GTA welding of stainless steels and nonferrous piping systems, which can be used at lower cost instead of argon.

In this paper, a 2D axisymmetric model of thermoelectric Finite Element Method (FEM) is developed to analyze the transient thermal behavior of Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process using commercial software, called ANSYS. The determination of the contact resistance at the faying surface is moderately simplified to reduce the calculating time, while the temperature dependent material properties, phase change and convectional boundary conditions are taken account fur the improvement of the calculated accuracy. The thermal history of the whole process (including cooling) and temperature distributions for any position in the weldment is obtained through the analysis.
Reliability evaluation of the welded structure for industrial structures/facilities such as power plant and petro-chemical refinery facilities is very important, and especially the reliability diagnosis of the structure is based on the exact evaluation of materials properties. But, the conventional Pre-Qualification test had the difficulty of evaluating the real material properties in the field because the test was made on the specimen with the simulated welding for the in-field welding condition. Therefore, a continuous indentation technique was proposed for simple and non-destructive testing of in-field structures and for selective testing of local range such as heat affected zone and weldment.
This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.
This paper describes the heat distribution characteristics of ASTM A131DH36 high tensile steel for ship structures in 5㎾ $CO_2$ laser welding. In general, high energy of laser beam concentrates on the small area of the weldment instantaneously; therefore, this heat transfer mechanism induces the rapid changes of temperature and mechanical characteristics in laser welds this mechanism. So temperature distribution analysis is important to understand mechanical characteristics of laser welds. Authors have conducted finite element simulation to analyze the heat distribution characteristics in laser welds. The result of simulation has been verified by comparing with the metallurgical experiment result. From the result of this study, we can accurately predict the heat distribution characteristics in laser welds by using numerical simulation.

For efficient NDE of pipes, essential components of power plant facilities, ultrasonic guided waves were generated and received applying an air-coupled transducer and comb one as non-contact technology, Mode generation and selection were predicted based on theoretical dispersive curve and the element spaceof a comb transducer. In addition, a receiving angle of the air-coupled transducer was determined to acquire the predicted modes by theoretical phase velocity of each mode. Theoretical dispersive curve was compared with the results of the time-frequency spectroscopes based on the wavelet transform and 2D-FFT to identify the characteristics of the received mode. The received modes show a good agreement with the predicted ones.
