Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains Al and Zn such as AZ3l , AZ6l and AZ9l. Three types of welding process were studied, that were GTAW, Laser beam welding and FSW. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. Also we checked bead shape and internal defects such as crack and porosity on cross section of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. For determination of the strength change by welding process, the hardness profile across the welding center was measured. For the results, the tensile properties of welded specimen were decreased obviously on all welding process. For the fusion welding process such as GTAW and laser beam welding, the surface of the welding bead was covered with oxidized magnesium dust but it was removed by simple cleaning work as wipe-out with tissue. Also under cut, that caused vaporization of base metal was occurred. for the friction stir welding, there was no oxidation, under-cut or internal defects. However it had poor weld performance, the reason was cleavage fracture occurred at plastic deformation zone. For welding of magnesium alloy, the laser beam welding process was recommended.
This paper describes the weldability and mechanical behavior of JIS S45C medium carbon steel (corresponding to KS SM45C and SAE 1045) for machine structures in CW Nd:YAG laser welding. In general, medium carbon steels have a limited application to the industrial fields in spite of good mechanical characteristics. This is due to welding difficulty because of the high carbon contents and impurities in this material. Therefore, in this study the laser weldability of medium carbon steel with adjusted contents of S and P has been investigated in order to extend the application to medium carbon steels. Several experiments and numerical simulations have been conducted to determine the characteristics of mechanical behavior in CW Nd:YAC laser welds. The results of the simulations concur with the experiment results. From the result of this study, the application possibility of CW Nd:YAG laser welding to medium carbon steel has been confirmed. Also, the appropriateness of mechanical behavior simulation has been verified to analyze and predict the welding phenomena.

With the high proportion of zinc coated steels in body-in-white assembly, newly developed surface roughness textured galvannealed steel sheets have been introduced. In this study, zinc coated and surface roughness textured steel sheets were welded by resistance spot welding to investigate its weldability including electrode wear test. Based on the results of tensile-shear test, nugget diameter changes, and electrode tip growth test, it was clear that both surface roughness textured steels (GA-T and GA-E) showed good weldability. Also, there was no large difference in weldability and electrode wear behavior between GA-T and GA-E steels which have different surface roughness morphology. An analysis of electrode degradation showed Fe and Zn penetration through the electrode tip surface at 2400 welds reached $55{\sim}60{\mu}m$ and $75{\sim}80{\mu}m$, respectively. Therefore, there is no significant effect of surface roughness morphology on spot weldability of surface roughness textured galvannealed steel sheets. However, slight difference in thickness of alloying layers existing on electrode tip was found between GA-T and GA-E steels.
Laser weldability of aluminized steels for deep drawing application has been investigated. Test coupons for Nd:YAG laser welding and $CO_2$ laser welding were prepared trom the commercial steels. According to the test results, total penetration and back bead width of aluminized steels were sensitive to the welding conditions. Bead width at the half thickness of the overlap joint, however, was rather constant. Laser weldability of aluminized steels was superior to that of zinc coated steel. Weld microstructure revealed that overlap zone adjacent to the fusion line was filled with coated materials, which was thought to be desirable to protect weld from crevice corrosion. The aluminum coated materials was also found in the weld metal. Practically no spattering was observed in the laser welding of aluminized steels even when the welding was performed without joint gap. In the welding of zinc coated steel, however, spattering was so severe that it was difficult to get the acceptable weld. Bead quality of aluminized steel laser weld was smooth and stable.
This study has evaluated the dissimialr weldability of Incoloy 825 Ni base alloy with a mild steel(SS41). Further a compatibility study of wrveral Ni base filler metals with the dissimilar joint between the two alloys was also included. The dissimilar weldability of Incoloy 825 with mild steel is strongly dependent upon the type of the filler metal used. Among the filler metals, ENiCrFe which has a chemical comosition similar to that of Incoloy 825 was found to be most compatible to the joint. In addition, a filler metal which showed a good cracing resistance in one dissimiar alloy combination was not necessarily graranteed to other combination. Microstructural examination with SEM, TEM and Auger revealed that the solidification cracking resestance of the dissimilar joint. between Incoloy 835 and SS41 was closely with the Ti+Nb content and with the content of a low melting eutectic phase of Laves relatibve to that of MC type phase.
During welding of Ni based superalloy, hot cracking was usually happen in the fusion zone of a weld. In this study, the laser weldability of Inconel 713C alloy for the turbocharger wastegate valve (WGV) was evaluated with various welding conditions, such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas. Welding conditions were optimized by bead-on-plate (BOP) and butt joint welding. For the evaluation of laser weldability, bead shapes and weld microstructures were investigated and tensile test was conducted. The fracture surfaces were investigated for the understanding the cause of the fracture.
For the purpose of establishing laser welding condition (laser power, welding speed and beam focus) and of evaluating tailored blanks for two kinds of thin steel sheets SPCC and SK5M using in the thin plate structure such as automobile, train, and so on, investigated their $CO^2$ laser weldability under various initial welding conditions. SPCC thin sheet showed good weldability under some welding conditions. But, high carbon steel sheet SK5M needed heat treatment after welding to obtain ductility of the welded joint. And next, tailored blank was tested through deep drawing to evaluate reliability of their obtained laser welding conditions. The forming depths by tailored blank were SPCC+SPCC=22-25mm and SK5M+SK5M=13-25mm.
Spot welding is one of the important welding processes for the construction of thin metal sheet. Because of low investment cost, alternating welding current is widely applied for power source. Direct current type could be, however, recommened for high quality weldment. In this study, the effect of welding current type on the weldability and the electrode life in spot welding of aluminium alloy were investigated. Various welding tests were done by using three phase direct and alternating welding current, respectively. In spite of high variation of welding force, weld quality and electrode life with alternating welding current were shown better results than those with direct current for 2mm thick alumininum alloy sheets. This was due to excessive erosion of the positive electrode in direct welding current compared with the negative one. On the contrary to 2mm sheets, the welding parameters of alternating current for 1mm sheets must be carefully selected.
In order to develop ASTM A302 grade C type steel plate with excellent weldability, several steels with different chemistry have been manufactured and evaluated their mechanical properties and weldability. Trial A302-C steels have revealed tensile strength in the range of $61-67kg/mm^2$ and elongation in the range of $27{\sim}32%$, depending on chemical compositions within the ASTM specification range. In case of impact toughness, trial steels showed in the range of 58-70J at $0^{\circ}C$. From the weldability test, the minimum preheat temperature was found to be about $150^{\circ}C$, and automatic welding condition satisfied the requirements of both ASTM specification and users.
The weldability of dissimilar materials between sintered materials which are consisted of Co, Co+Ni and carbon steel has been investigated using CO$_2$ laser. Autogeneous CO$_2$ laser welding were run along the butt between two alloys using sets of parameters variation-power and travel speed. In order to study weldability, mechanical tests (bending strength test, microhardness test) and metallurgical analyses (microstructure, phase transformation, fracture mode) were carried out. From the results obtained, it was found that the porosity which exists in a weld metal greatly affects the soundness of the weld. The optimum energy input to have a proper strength over than the requirement by a specification, found to be around 0.3-0.35kJ/m. There are two kinds of fracture mode in the weld metal, depending upon alloy combination, brittle fracture in the case of Co-carbon steel and a ductile fracture in the case of Co+Ni-carbon steel. In general, Co+Ni sintered material showed a better weld properties as compared to the Co sintered material.
