  • This study investigates the discharge coefficient of Improved-Pneumatic-Movable (IPM) weir through the weir, a kind of movable weirs, to estimate much more accurate rating curves using laboratory flume experiments. The discharge coefficient ($C_d$) is from 0.613 to 0.634 by the stand-up angle of the weir. The upstream Froude Number ($F_{r1}$), relative crest length(${\xi}$), Headwater Ratio ($H_1/W$), the Overflow depth ratio of weir crest ($y_c/y_1$) was changed by the upstream. And the downstream Froude number ($F_{r2}$), the Overflow depth ratio of weir crest and Downstream Water depth ($y_c/y_2$) was changed by the downstream. The ratio of Downstream and Up and Downstream water Depth (${\Delta}y/y_2$) was found to be changed by both of the up and downstream flow. They considered the major influence variables and derived the Discharge coefficient Formula at this study. The Discharge coefficient of the Improved-Pneumatic-Movable (IPM) weir was settled by the height of the Movable weir, that is to say, it was settled by the flow conditions of upstream approach flow head and physical data according to the standing angle.

  • The present study used the hydrodynamic numerical model, with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) as its governing equations, to analyze overflow characteristics such as the discharge coefficient of circular-crested weir and the flow velocity and pressure distribution of weir crest. The simulation results well reproduced the overflow characteristics of the overfall of circular-crested weir both qualitatively and quantitatively. As for the discharge coefficient, rational results were yielded by the discharge coefficient equation proposed by Hager(1985) in the $H_1/R_b<0.58$ and by the discharge coefficient equation proposed by Samani and Bagheri(2014) in the $H_1/R_b>0.58$, respectively. Because most existing discharge coefficient equations were developed by disregarding the effects of the approach velocity, when they are applied, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of the approach velocity on the overflow head beforehand.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir with shapes. Prediction of maximum or equilibrium scour depth was the main focus of engineers and researchers in the downstream of weir. However, it is necessary to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir to predict real time scour depth. Experiment were performed with various weir shapes like sharp crest and inclined stepped with time variation and non-dimensional scourhole shapes, scour depths were proposed. A formula for predicting scour depths with temporal variation for weir were proposed through non-linear regression analysis. Temporal variation of scour depths could be estimated with suggested formula and 4 input data (Equilibrium scour depth, weir height, overflow depths, and water depth downstream). Suggested formula could make it possible to design a apron and bed protection economically in the downstream of a weir by considering flood duration time.

  • This Study calculated the Submerged Flow Characteristics and Discharge coefficient by the rising angular change of the Improved-Pneumatic-Movable. According to the result, the smaller the ratio of weir height and weir length (L/W) or the weir standing angle, the bigger of the downstream head ($H_2$). The change of discharge reduction factor ($Q_s/Q_1$), by the hight from weir crest to downstream surface and the ratio form weir crest to upstream water height ($h_t/H$), was decreased when the $h_t/H$ closed to number 1. Although the weir water depth of the down-stream was shallower level than the up-stream, the velocity was faster then before. And the more the flow, the less the gab between the upper and lower reaches level. And when the same flow condition, the downstream head ($H_2$) was increased when the L/W was bigger. The Submerged Flow Discharge coefficient of Improved-Pneumatic-Movable weir was made by the upstream approach flow head and the upper lower stream flow condition, not by the physical data of Movable weir.

  • In order to develop the weir with high reaeration efficiency, the reaeration experiments at linear weir, ogee spillway type weir, and labyrinth weirs were conducted and the results were compared. The effect of roughened crest was also analyzed. It was found from the experiments that the oxygen transfer efficiency at the ogee spillway type weir was the lowest and that at the linear weir was second lowest among the weirs used in the experiments. It was also revealed that the reaeration efficiencies of the labyrinth weirs increase as the included angles become smaller. The roughened crest which causes the disintegration of overflow was found to increase the reaeration efficiency significantly. On the basis of the results of the experiments, the pilot construction of the labyrinth welt with included angle of 30 degree was made. The labyrinth weir was made up by assembling the frame and then filling the ripraps into the frame. The ripraps were exposed at the crest to split the overflow. The average value of oxygen transfer efficiency observed at the pilot weir was 0.18. It is expected that the results from the experimental study and the field data of the pilot weir would serve for the improvement of water quality by the weirs with high reaeration efficiency.

  • Stepped weir of this study was suggested a type of natural type structures. Unique flow, such as Wave type flow, at downstream of mild slope stepped occurs. WTF(Wave type flow) is different with hydraulic jump occurred at Round crest weir. WTF is phenomenon to rise the water level by recirculation area occurred by step height at downstream of mild slope stepped. Wave height of WTF condition is higher than tailwater level and maximum velocity of WTF condition occurs in area of water surface. In this results, WTF presents to be important factor for design of join area of weir with levee. This study got and analyzed hydraulic condition occurred of WTF, scales of WTF and velocity profiles on flow patterns using experiments. WTF was not consider to stepped weir design and this results can be important data for design of stepped weir and structures.

  • Due to the recent requirement of installing low-head structures considering environmental aspects, various types of fixed weir have been suggested. However, the design guideline of transverse structures for practical application is very limited. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the hydraulic properties of the fixed weirs installed at the small and middle sized rivers of Korea depending on the physical specifications to provide fundamental data that may be reflected to the design of a low-head fixed weir considering the relevant environmental aspects. The basic discharge coefficient of slope-type and step-type weirs depending on change of crest was estimated, and a stage-discharge curve was developed. In addition, the flow properties under free flow and submerged flow conditions were analyzed by varying the hydraulic conditions such as discharge and crest.

  • The spillway type of small and midsize dams in Korea is almost overflow weir. To examine flood control capacity of overflow spillway, FLOW-3D was applied to Daesuho dam and analysis was focused on the discharge of dam spillway by changing weir shape. Overflow phases and discharges of linear labyrinth weir and curved labyrinth weir were compared with those of existing linear ogee weir. Hydraulic model experiment was performed to verify numerical result. Verification results showed that overflow behaviors and flow characteristics in the side channel by hydraulic model experiment and numerical simulation are well matched, and water surface elevation at side wall coincides with each other. When the reservoir elevation was increased up to design flood level, in case of the linear ogee weir the flow over the crest ran through smoothly in the side channel, whereas in cases of linear labyrinth weir and curved labyrinth weirs, the flow discharge was increased by 40 cms, and the flow over the weir crest, rotating counter-clockwise, was submerged in the side channel. The results of the water level-discharge curve revealed that labyrinth weir can increase discharge by 71% compared to the discharge of linear ogee weir at low reservoir elevation since it can have longer effective length. But as water surface elevation rises, the slope of water level-discharge curve of labyrinth weir becomes milder by submergence and nappe interference in the side channel.

  • In this study, we proposed modified settling basins transformed by substituting the downstream sill for low head weirs such as generic labyrinth weir and inclined crest labyrinth weir worked as internal baffles. Laboratory experiments were carried out to understand hydraulic characteristics inside of the settling basin to improve the efficiency of sedimentation rate. For a quantitative analysis, we suggested the headwater ratio($H_t/P$), the magnification ratio(L/W) and the inflow rate per total crest length($q_L$) as primary analysis indexes for sedimentation efficiency. Six different types of settling basin were used for labscaled pilot tests by distinguishing with internal structures. Based on results, the variation of headwater ratio with the change of magnification ratio would highly affect the deposition efficiency(%) and it was improved under specific condition that repeating arrange number(N) of labyrinth weir was between 2 and 4. Also, the regression analysis showed that initial condition and shape for improving sedimentation efficiency were plotted on the graph for both $q_L{\geq}3.5cm^2/s$ and $L/W{\leq}3.5$. It would be expected that the geometrically optimized labyrinth settling basin could be designed with proper deposition efficiency for inflow rates of influent and required area of settling basin utilizing the proposed analysis index in this study.

  • One-dimensional unsteady flow model including weir flow simulation is studied. Applicabilities of both the single channel model with local treatment of the weir overflow, and the looped-network model are studied using a test problem. It is shown that various type of weir flows including reverse flows are successfully simulated. Flow discontinuity due to the high crest elevation can also be simulated. The reverse free-flowing overflow can be simulated by the single-channel model as well as by the looped-network model.
