  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was to know the effect of visual feedback self exercise (VFSE) on postural control in stroke patients. METHODS: 26 CVA patients were participated. The experimental group (EG) 12 (46.2%) and the control group (CG) 14 (53.8%), 17 males and 9 females. The subjects preformed VFSE on training instrument 10 minutes for 20 times in 2-3 weeks. The test was done 3 times. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences of the general characteristics of subjects between EG and CG by sex, affected site, muscle tone, sensory deficit, unilateral neglects, and vestibular dysfunction. The postural control effects of VFSE, in the EG showed that there were statistically significant differences among the tests during VFSE. However in the CG there were no statistically significant differences among the tests during VFSE. Also there was statistically significant difference between EG and CG after VFSE (p<.05). On the right hemiplegic EG showed that there was statistically significant difference between premid test and pre-post test after VFSE. But, the left hemiplegic EG showed that there was no statistically significant difference between before and after VFSE with all of tests. CONCLUSION: CVA patients had significant different of body weight ratio between hemiplegic side and the other side. This research suggested that CVA patients need self exercise with visual feedback for the improvement postural control ability. Therefore Physical therapist should not only prescribe hand-on exercise but also need to teach them self sensory feedback exercise to help them improve their postural control.

  • Background: To identify a new strategy for postoperative pain management, we investigated the analgesic effects of allopregnanolone (Allo) in an incisional pain model, and also assessed its effects on the activities of the primary afferent fibers at the dorsal horn. Methods: In experiment 1, 45 rats were assigned to Control, Allo small-dose (0.16 mg/kg), and Allo large-dose (1.6 mg/kg) groups (n = 15 in each). The weight bearing and mechanical withdrawal thresholds of the hind limb were measured before and at 2, 24, 48, and 168 h after Brennan's surgery. In experiment 2, 16 rats were assigned to Control and Allo (0.16 mg/kg) groups (n = 8 in each). The degree of spontaneous pain was measured using the grimace scale after the surgery. Activities of the primary afferent fibers in the spinal cord (L6) were evaluated using immunohistochemical staining. Results: In experiment 1, the withdrawal threshold of the Allo small-dose group was significantly higher than that of the Control group at 2 h after surgery. Intergroup differences in weight bearing were not significant. In experiment 2, intergroup differences in the grimace scale scores were not significant. Substance P release in the Allo (0.16 mg/kg) group was significantly lower than that in the Control group. Conclusions: Systemic administration of Allo inhibited mechanical allodynia and activities of the primary afferent fibers at the dorsal horn in a rat postoperative pain model. Allo was proposed as a candidate for postoperative pain management.

  • Biological early warning system detects toxicity by looking at behavior of organisms in water. The system uses classifier for judgement about existence and amount of toxicity in water. Boosting algorithm is one of possible application method for improving performance in a classifier. Boosting repetitively change training example set by focusing on difficult examples in basic classifier. As a result, prediction performance is improved for the events which are difficult to classify, but the information contained in the events which can be easily classified are discarded. In this paper, an incremental learning method to overcome this shortcoming is proposed by using the extended data expression. In this algorithm, decision tree classifier define class distribution information using the weight parameter in the extended data expression by exploiting the necessary information not only from the well classified, but also from the weakly classified events. Experimental results show that the new algorithm outperforms the former Learn++ method without using the weight parameter.

  • In this paper, we present bit error rate(BER) performance of an adaptive decision feedback equalizer(DFE) using experimental data. The experiment was performed at the shore of Geoje in November 2007. The BER of the adaptive DFE whose tap weight is updated by RLS is described with change of feedforward filter length, feedback filter length, training sequence length, and delay, which shows that the uncoded average BER is $4{\times}10^2\;and\;1.5{\times}10^{-2}$ with transmission range of 9.7km and 4km, respectively. The BER of the adaptive DFE can be lower than 10-3 by a forward error correction code and therefore the adaptive DFE may be a good candidate for a high speed AUV communications since the volume and weight of the underwater acoustic modem should be small because of the restricted space and power in the battery-operated AUV.

  • During the period from 1966 to 1968, total catches of Spanish mackerel averaged 6,000 to 7,000M/T per annual in Korea, and approximately 70 per cent of this amount was captured by drift nets. In an effort to improve the efficiency of drift nets, some experiments were conducted in 1969 to investigate the selectivity of material and mesh sizes. Seven different mesh sizes (80,85,95,100,105,110 and 115 mm) of both multi- and mono-filament netting were used, and the following results were obtained : 1, The body weight of Spanish mackerel taken with the seven different mesh sizes ranges from 0.5kg to 2.9kg, and the mode of body weight consists of three groups, 1kg ($21%$), 1.3kg($15\%$) and 1.5kg($19\%$). 2. For multi-filament net, 80 to 105mm mesh sizes were suitable to catch those three groups, and a little smalter than these for mono-filament net. 3. For Spanish mackerel only, the mono-filament material proved to have 1.5 times better selectivity than multi-filament : however, the latter proved superior for miscellaneous fish species due to its different size and shape. 4. Multi-filament net showed better selectivity for smaller species than mono-filament. (and mono-filament in general indicated opposite phenomenon.)

  • Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is the most widely used method in speech recognition. In general, HMM parameters are trained to have maximum likelihood (ML) for training data. Although the ML method has good performance, it dose not take account into discrimination to other words. To complement this problem, a word verification method by re-recognition of the recognized word and its similar word using the discriminative function of the two words. To find the similar word, the probability of other words to the HMM is calculated and the word showing the highest probability is selected as the similar word of the mode. To achieve discrimination to each word the weight to each state is appended to the HMM parameter. The weight is calculated by genetic algorithm. The verificator complemented discrimination of each word and reduced the error occurred by similar word. As a result of verification the total error is reduced by about 22%

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect and correlation of anthropometric data, eating behaviors, and nutrient intake on the bone mineral density(BMD) of female college students. 349 female college students were surveyed and their age, height, and weight were an average of 20.5 years, 163.2 cm and 54.0 kg, respectively. Their average BMI was 20.2, with 66% falling in the normal range, 21.8% classified as underweight, 8.0% as overweight, and obese individuals comprised 3.4% of the sample by BMI classification. Calcaneal BMD was measured and the average T-score was 0.117. The results of BMD measurements were normal in 268 people(76.8%), osteopenia was found in 71 individuals(20.3%), and osteoporosis in 10(2.9%), respectively. There was a significant difference in bone mineral density according to height(p<0.05) and BMI (p<0.01). There were significant differences between BMD and eating behavior, regularity of eating behaviors(p<0.05), instant food intake(p<0.05), eating out(p<0.05) and nutritional supplement intake(p<0.05). In addition, normal the group with normal BMD had a more desirable eating behavior compared to the osteopenia and osteoporosis afflicted groups. BMD had a significant difference according to the nutrient intake of calcium(p<0.05), vitamin A(p<0.05), and vitamin C(p<0.05). In conclusion, BMD showed a good correlation with height(p<0.01), BMI(p<0.01), body composition including total body water(p<0.05), FFM(p<0.05), body protein(p<0.05) and intake of calcium(p<0.05), iron(p<0.05), vitamin A(p<0.05), and vitamin C(p<0.05). Therefore, an education plan and training on balanced diets proper body weight control, and desirable eating behaviors for female college students will be needed.

  • Image analysis algorithm for the quality evaluation of ginseng seedling was investigated. The images of ginseng seedling were acquired with a color CCD camera and processed with the image analysis methods, such as binary conversion, labeling, and thinning. The processed images were used to calculate the length and weight of ginseng seedlings. The length and weight of the samples could be predicted with standard errors of 0.343 mm, and 0.0214 g respectively, $R^2$ values of 0.8738 and 0.9835 respectively. For the evaluation of the three quality grades of Gab, Eul, and abnormal ginseng seedlings, features from the processed images were extracted. The features combined with the ratio of the lengths and areas of the ginseng seedlings efficiently differentiate the abnormal shapes from the normal ones of the samples. The grade levels were evaluated with an efficient pattern recognition method of support vector machine analysis. The quality grade of ginseng seedling could be evaluated with an accuracy of 95% and 97% for training and validation, respectively. The result indicates that color image analysis with support vector machine algorithm has good potential to be used for the development of an automatic sorting system for ginseng seedling.
