The purposes of this study were to describe and compare pint moments according to 6 types of gait methods during free speed. 15 volunteers(7 male, 8 female: mean age = 23.33 yrs.) participated and performed 6 types of gait methods. From the 3 types of pint moments of lower extremities(hip, knee, ankle and foot), the following results were made: 1. In left hip pint, the flexion-extension moment was not significantly different, but the adduction-abduction moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. 2. In left knee pint, the flexion-extension moment was not significantly different, but the varus-valgus moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. 3. In left ankle and foot the dorsiflexion-plantarflexion moment was not significantly different but the varus-valgus moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. In conclusion, because weight loading gait with 10-20% of body weight were normal gait patterns, It was inferred that all weight loading gaits did not indicate noxious reactions of human body.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of wrist and trunk weight loading using sandbags in stroke patients in order to provide the quantitative data for enhancement of gait movement. Method: Twelve stroke patients, who have been diagnosed with hemiplegia over a year ago, were participated in this study. All subjects were asked to perform normal walking [N], wrist sandbag walking [W], wrist & trunk sandbag walking [WT], and both wrist sandbag walking [B] and both wrist & trunk sandbag walking [BT], respectively. Eight infrared cameras were used to collect the raw data. Gait parameters, arm swing, shoulder-pelvic kinematics, and lower extremity joint angle were calculated to examine the differences during walking. Results: As a result, there were no significant differences in the gait parameters, shoulder-pelvis, and lower extremities joint angles, but significant differences were found in the range of motion and the anteversion in arm swing. Conclusion: Wrist and trunk weight loading using sandbags affected the movement of the upper extremities only while it did not affect the movement of the lower extremities. It implies that it can reduce the risk of falling caused by a sudden movement change in lower extremities. In addition, the wrist and trunk weight loading using sandbags can induce changes in movement of the upper extremities independently and contribute to functional rehabilitation through resistance training.
80 persons who don't have past history of cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular disease. The results were as follow; 1. PCI(Physiological Cost Index) value without loading to ankle were significantly increased compared to 1kg, and 2kg (p<0.01). 2. Female Subjects showed more increased PCI value in without loading and lkg, 2kg loading compared to male subjects (p<0.01). 3. In every PCI condition the difference among height groups was observed (p<0.01). 4. The difference among weight groups in each PCI condition was observed (p<0.01). These results showed that energy consumption was increased according to loading on the ankle during gait so weight of orthosis or prosthesis must be considered when choosing them and during gait training with these ones.
The gait training strategy in very important things for central nervous system(CNS) injury patients. There are many method and strategy for regaining of the gait who had CNS injury. A human being has central pattern generator(CPG) is spinal CPG for locomotion. It is a neural network which make the cyclical patterns and rhythmical activities for walking. Sensory input from loading and hip position is essential for CPG stimulation that makes the central neural rhythm and pattern generating structure. From sensory input, the proprioceptive information facilitate proximal muscles that controlled in voluntarily from cortical level and visual and / or acoustical information facilitate distal muscles that controlled voluntarily from subcortical level. Gait training method can classify that is functional level and structural level. Functional level includ level surface gait, going up and down the stair. It is important to facilitate a guide tempo in order to activate the central pattern generators. During the functional test or functional activities, can point out the poor period in gait that have to be facilitate in structural level. There are many access methods with patient position and potentiality. The methods are using of rhythmic initiation, replication and combination of isotonic with standing position. Clinically using it on weight transfer onto the stance leg, loading response, loading response and pre-swing, terminal stance, up and downwards stairs.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of the energy consumption when loading to leg of the 60persons who don't have past history of cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular disease, To evaluate the change or energy consumption, heart rate was measured in sitting position for 5minute, during walking for 3minute at for 4.8km on treadmill, and during resting state after walking with 1Kg loading to right ankle, and the other 1Kg loading was added to left ankle and then heart rates were measured in the The results were as follow; 1. PCI value without loading to Ankle were significantly increased compared to 1Kg, and 2Kg. (p<0.05) 2. Female Subjects showed mon increased PCI value in without leading and 2Kg loading compared to male subjects. ( p<0.05) 3. When 1Kg ana 2Ka loading to ankle significantly differences were showed between them. (p<0.05) 4. In the case of 1Kg and 2Kg loading, the difference among age groups was observed and the significant difference among PCI, PCI 1kg, PCI 2kg was showed in the only group that is less than 30 years old. 5. In every PCI condition the difference among height groups was observed and the significant difference among PCI conditions was showed in the only group that is less than 165cm. 6. The difference among weight groups in each PCI condition was not observed, but the significant differences among PCI conditions was showed in every group except the group that h from 60kg to 69kg. These results showed that energy consumption was increased according to loading on the ankle during Sate so weight of orthosis or prosthesis met be considered when choosing them and during gait training with these ones.
In this study, vertical acceleration of center of mass was observed along normal gait phases in 9 healthy male volunteers (aged $25.7{\pm}2.18$). The developed wireless accelerometric device was attached on the intervertebral space between L3 and L4 using a semi-elastic waist belt. A three-dimensional motion analysis system, synchronized with the accelerometry, was used for detecting gait phases. There was no significant correlation between the body weight and the acceleration. The first peak curve covered loading response phase. The second downward peak point was matched accurately with the opposite toe-off. In mid-stance and terminal stance, the acceleration curve highly resembled the vertical ground reaction force curve. There was no significant difference in timing between the final upward peak point and the initial contact. Therefore, the developed accelerometry system would be helpful in determining determine temporal gait pattems in patients with gait disorders.
The purpose of this study were to analyze the changes in kinematic and kinetic parameters and to find biomechanical benefits of Nordic Walking and normal gait performed under the same velocity. Nine participants(age: $26.73{\pm}3.28$ year, height: $182.45{\pm}4.62\;cm$, weight: $76.59{\pm}6.84\;kg$) was chosen. The velocity of gait was set by 5.75 km/h which was made by a Nordic Walking professional. The data were collected by using VICON with 8 cameras to analyze kinematic variables with 200 Hz and force platform to analyze kinetic variables with 2000 Hz. The results of this study were as follows. First, when compared with Normal gait, Nordic Walking group showed decreased Plantarflexion angle and ROM. Second, Nordic Walking group showed decreased knee flexion angle and ROM. Third, Nordic Walking group showed increased hip joint movement. Fourth, Nordic Walking group showed higher active GRF but decreased loading rate from delayed Peak Vertical GRF time and increased impulse. Fifth, Nordic Walking group showed longer ground contact time. Through this study, we found that Nordic Walking showed higher stability and efficiency during gait than normal gait and that Nordic Walking may help people who have walking difficulties.
The purpose of the current experiment was to describe interlimb coordination when swing limb conditions are being manipulated by constraining step length or by adding a 5 or 10 pound weight to the swing limb distally. Subjects were asked to begin walking with the right limb to land on the primary target (normal step length) that is 10 cm in diameter. However, if, during movement, the light was illuminated, then the subject had to step on one of the secondary targets (long and short step length). These three step length conditions were repeated while wearing a 5 pound ankle weight and then when wearing a 10 pound ankle weight. Ground reaction force (GRF) data indicated that there were changes in the forces and slopes of the swing and stance Fx GRFs. Long stepping subjects had to increase the propulsive force required to increase step length. Consequently, swing and stance toe-off greatly increased in the long step length condition. Short step length subjects had to adequately adjust step length, which decreased the speed of gait initiation. Loading the swing limb decreased the force and slope of the swing limb. Swing and stance toe-off was longest for the long step length condition, but there was a small difference of temporal events between no weight and weight condition. It appears that subjects modulated GRFs and temporal events differently to achieve the peak acceleration force of the swing and stance limb in response to different tasks. The findings from the current study provide preliminary data, which can be used to further investigate how we modulate forces during voluntary movement from a quiet stance. This information may be important if we are to use this or a similar task to evaluate gait patterns of the elderly and patient populations.
Hip joint simulator which Is an essential device for evaluating the wear of biomaterials (ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, Co-Cr alloy, alumina, etc.) used in total hip joint replacement was developed. This hip joint simulator mimics the joint motion and joint loading of human gait by adapting the 4 degree of freedom in kinematic motion (flexing/extension, adduction/abduction, Internal rotation/external rotation) and axial loading, Four stations are operated by 8 servo-motors and harmony drives. Joint leading was imposed by displacement control from a ball screw, LM guide, and spring system. Each kinematic link system operates separately or coupled modes. A heater and a thermocouple were installed for keeping the body temperature in each station.
Objective: To examine the effects of different shoe weights on lower leg muscle fatigue when walking by electromyographic (EMG) analysis due to the most effective weight for loading not being established. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Thirty healthy university students (15 male, 15 female) were enrolled and randomly assigned into three conditions, which included wearing athletic shoes with an addition of 300 g, 500 g, and 1,000 g weights respectively. Prior to walking, all subjects were instructed to sit in a chair for 10 minutes. All subjects walked at a speed of 3.6 m/s on a treadmill for 20 minutes without rest. EMG measurements were taken using the median power frequency to assess for the effect of the different weight of shoes on muscle fatigue of the soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior while walking on a treadmill in an upright posture. EMG measurements were taken during the first and last 30 seconds of walking. Results: In terms of muscle fatigue, for the soleus, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g compared with 300 g and 500 g (p<0.05). For the tibialis anterior, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g than 300 g and 500 g (p<0.05). For the gastrocnemius, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g compared with 300 g (p<0.05). Conclusions: Increased shoe weight increases soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscle fatigue during ambulation.
