  • The development and repair requires the formation of new tissues comprised of various extracellular matrix components. The present study investigated the formation and distribution of the major ECM components such as type I collagen, type III collagen, fibronection, bone sialoprotein, and osteonection during development and repair. For developing observation. Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $27{\pm}1gm$ were sacrificed. For repair observation, Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $110{\pm}5gm$ were used. The pulp perforation were prepared on mesial surface of the maxillary first molar by using 1/2round bur. At 5 days after perforation, rats were sacrificed by perfusion with 3 % paroformaldehyde. The maxillary first molar region were cut, demineralized, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin. Immunostaining the ECM components was achieved by the avidin-biotin complex method. The results as follows : 1. Bright immunoreaction for fibronectin was present in the basement membrane at the inner epithelial-mesenchymal interface, especially concentrated in the blood vessel walls, cell membrane of odontoblasts, and initial predentin. 2. Type I and III collagen was observed in the newly formed pulp tissue, predentin, and its intensity increased as more of these components during repair. 3. Strong immunostaining for bone sialoprotein and osteonectin was found in dentin while no or weaker staining was observed loose connective tissue of the pulp. 4. These results suggest that develpment and repair is achieved through a series of cell differentiation and attachment by the specific ECM components.

  • The effects of deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest during aortic arch reconstruction are associated with potential neurologic and myocardial injury. We describe a surgical technique that two patients underwent a modified Norwood procedure without circulatory arrest and myocardial ischemia. One was 13-day-old female patient, weighing 3.1kg, having a variant of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and another was 38-day-old male patient, weighing 3.4 kg, diagnosed Taussig-Bing anomaly with severe aortic arch hypoplasia, coarctation of the aorta, and subaortic stenosis. The arterial cannula was inserted in innominate artery directly. During Norwood reconstruction, regional high-flow perfusion into the inominate artery and coronary perfusion were maintained and there were no neurologic, cardiac, and renal complications in two patients. This technique may help protect the brain and myocardium from ischemic injury in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome or other arch anomalies including coarctation or interruption.

  • A new frequency weighing sensor was applied to grow Bi12GeO20 crystals in the auto-di-ameter control system of Czochralski method. The rotation rate was varied in the range of 23 to 21 rpm to preserve flat interface in a given heat configuration. To prevent the constitutional super-cooling from the evaporation loss, 105% stoichiometric amount of Bi2O3 was employed, equivalent to 6.18 molar ratio of Bi2O3 to GeO2. Transparent and light brown Bi12GeO20 single crystal in uniform diameter was grown. The dislocation density was determined to be 103/cm2 corresponding to the optical quality in commercial applications. The grown crystal measured diameter 25 mm and length 70 mm and the preferred growth direction was confirmed to be <110>.

  • Two charging methods of electrostatic nozzle, i.e. induction and ionized field corona charging, were designed and evaluated for orchard sprayer application. An artificial (metallic) target was constructed and used in this experiment. The charge-to-mass ratio for the induction electrode was measured by using the Faraday cage. Two conventional pressure-swirl nozzles have been employed with different orifice diameters under the same experimental operating conditions. A commercial pressure-swirl nozzle with orifice diameter of 1.0 was used for the conventional spray. The diameter of the electrostatic was 0.59 mm. The experiment was carried out for individual nozzle sprays at $0^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ oriented angles and three nozzles, sprayed simultaneously at a distance of 1.0 and 2.0 m from the nozzle tip to the target. The nozzles were mounted on a carriage with constant speed of 1.26 km/h with a blower attached. The weighing method was employed to evaluate for the spray deposition, ground loss and estimated drift. The results show more promising for the induction charging method, especially at $20^{\circ}$oriented angle at a distance of 1.0 m from the target for a single nozzle and when all three nozzles were operated simultaneously for spray deposition. The results of the induction charging method show promising with the developed electrostatic technique.

  • This study was performed to analyse the rainfall and the rainfall-runoff characteristics of a rural watershed. The Sangwha basin($105.9km^{2}$) in the Geum river system was selected for this study. The arithmetic mean method, the Thiessen's weighing method, and the isohyetal method were used to analyse areal rainfall distribution and the Huff's quartile method was used to analyse temporal rainfall distribution. In addition, daily runoff analyses were peformed using the DAWAST and tank model. In the model calibration, the data from June through November, 1999 were used. In the model calibration, the observed runoff depth was 513.7mm and runoff rate was 45.2%, and the DAWAST model simulated runoff depth was 608.6mm and runoff rate was 53.5%, and the tank model runoff depth was 596.5mm and runoff rate was 52.5%, respectively. In the model test, the data from June through November, 2000 were used. In the model test, the observed runoff depth was 1032.3mm and runoff rate was 72.5%, and the DAWAST model simulated runoff depth was 871.6mm and runoff rate was 61.3%, and the tank model runoff depth was 825.4mm and runoff rate was 58%, respectively. The DAWAST and tank model's $R^{2}$ and RMSE were 0.85, 3.61mm, and 0.85, 2.77mm in 1999, and 0.83, 5.73mm, and 0.87, 5.39mm in 2000, respectively. Both models predicted low flow runoff better than flood runoff.

  • The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved by successively in the moving least square sense. Some weighing functions were tested in order to investigate the up-winding effect for the convection term. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as FVM.

  • This study was performed to establish a simple and rapid method for measuring thrombin activity based on weight of fibrin clot formed. The new method was based on the weight measurement of fibrin clot after enzymatic reaction of thrombin with fibrinogen. The fibrin formation depended upon the activities of thrombin used, temperature, incubation time, and centrifugation time. The fibrin formation was increased proportionally up to 1.0 unit/ml of thrombin activity, 4.0mg/ml of fibrinogen concentration, and 5 min of incubation time at 37$^{\circ}C$. The fibrin clot formed was stable by centrifugation at 3,000$\times$g for 5min. This simple assay based on weight of fibrin after centrifugation would be useful for identifying natural food anticoagulants by inhibiting thrombin.

  • This study assessed folate intakes, folate concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes, plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentration, and urinary excretion of folate metabolites in Korean women with childbearing potential. A total of 23 women voluntarily participated in this study. Precise dietary intakes for 3 consecutive days were determined by weighing all foods consumed and folate intake was calculated using a computer-aided dietary analysis system. Folate concentration of plasma and erythrocytes was determined by a microbiological method. Plasma tHcy concentration was assayed using an HPLC analysis method. Urine excreted over the same period of time was collected and folate catabolites, para-aminobenzoylglutamate (pABG) and para-acetamidobenzoylglutamate (ApABG), were evaluated using a reverse-phase HPLC method after affinity chromatography. Young women of 20 and under were likely to consume less folate with low energy intake, had lower folate concentration in plasma and erythrocytes, and excreted a lesser amount of ApABG and total folate catabolites than women of 25 years and over. The results of this study confirmed that young Korean women with childbearing potential, especially those under 21 years of age, might be at risk for compromised folate status due to insufficient folate intakes from inadequate energy consumption.

  • Objectives : The warm needling technique is the method combining the effects of acupuncture needle with those of moxibustion. We need to standardize the characteristics of the warm needling technique, in order to get more systematic and objective results in operation and effects and then get more clinical abilities in these fields. Methods : In this study, using labview system on the warm needling technique, we measured and compared partial temperature changes according to the kind of needle. We studied relations of moxa cones of various sizes with the peak combustion temperature. Results and Conclusions: When we measured the warm needling's partial temperature, temperature measured at 1 and 2 cm below the head, according to the kind of needle, gold needle got the higher result on the peak than SS304 stainless steel needle. In the case of combustion of the moxa cones, cones weighing 0.4 g and 0.8 g, respectively, and the apex ignition method with gold needle showed the higher result than the apex ignition method with stainless steel needle, when we measured the effective stimulus time at 2 cm below the head and the mean temperature during the effective stimulus time. Although more research to standardize the characteristics of the warm needling technique will be needed, we suggest, according to these results, that warm needling of gold needle combined with moxa cone of 0.4 or 0.8 g is effective.
