  • This study was conducted to estimate the best-fit nonlinear height-DBH growth models for Larix kaempferi in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang province in South Korea. Exponential, Modified Logistic, Chapman-Richards, and Weibull function were used for estimating height-DBH models. To evaluate the selected models, $R^2$, RMSE, MD, MAD, and residual plots were performed in each model. Also, the coefficients and patterns in models of the previous studies were compared with those in this study. The result showed that Weibull equation was found to be the best-fit model with $R^2$=0.9837, RMSE=2.6133, MD=0.0089, and MAD=2.0896. All model parameters in our study had similar values to those in the previous models except for asymptotic parameter a. Our research result showed that Gangwon and North Gyeongsang province were superior to other provinces with regard to height growth for Larix kaempferi.

  • A stress-strength model is formulated for s of k systems consisting of identical components. We consider minimum variance unbiased (MVU) estimation of system reliability for data consisting of a random sample from the stress distribution and one from the strength distribution when the two distirubtions are Weibull with unknown scale parameters and same known shape parameter. The asymptotic distribution of MVU estimate of system reliability in the model is obtained by using the standard asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimate of system reliability and establishing their equivalence. Uniformly most accurate unbiased confidence intervals are also obtained for system reliability. Empirical comparison of the two estimates for small samples is studies by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • We propose a software-reliability growth model incoporating the amount of uniform and Weibull testing efforts during the software testing phase in this paper. The time-dependent behavior of testing effort is described by uniform and Weibull curves. Assuming that the error detection rate to the amount of testing effort spent during the testing phase is proportional to the current error content, the model is formulated by a nonhomogeneous Poisson process. Using this model the method of data analysis for software reliability measurement is developed. The optimum release time is determined by considering how the initial reliability R(x|0) would be. The conditions are $R(x|0)>R_o$, $R_o>R(x|0)>R_o^d$ and $R(x|0)<R_o^d$ for uniform testing efforts. Ideal case is $R_o>R(x|0)>R_o^d$. Likewise, it is $R(x|0){\geq}R_o$, $R_o>R(x|0)>R_o^{\frac{1}{g}$ and $R(x\mid0)<R_o^{\frac{1}{g}}$ for Weibull testing efforts. Ideal case is $R_o>R(x|0)>R_o^{\frac{1}{g}}$.

  • For highly reliable products, it is difficult to assess the lifetime of the products with traditional life tests. Accordingly, a recent approach is to observe the performance degradation of product during the test rather than regular failure time. This study compares performances of three methods(i.e. the approximation, analytical and numerical methods) to estimate the parameters and quantiles of the lifetime when the time-to-failure distribution follows Weibull and lognormal distributions under a random coefficient degradation rate model. Numerical experiments are also conducted to investigate the effects of model error such as measurements in a random coefficient model.

  • In this paper, wind data at 20 locations are collected and analyzed in order to review optimal candidate site for offshore wind farm around Korean marginal seas. Observed wind data is fitted to Rayleigh and Weibull distribution and annual energy production is estimated according to wind frequency. As the model of wind turbine generator, seven kinds of output of 1.5~5 MW were selected and their performance curves were used. As a result, Repower-5 MW turbines showed high energy production at wind speeds of 7.15 m/s or higher, but G128-4.5 MW turbines were found to be favorable at lower wind speeds. In the case of Marado, Geojedo and Pohang, where the rate of occurrence of wind speeds over 10 m/s was high, the capacity factor of REpower's 5 MW offshore wind turbine was 56.49%, 50.92% and 50.08%, respectively.

  • Software stability is the possibility of operating without any malfunction in the operating environment over time. In a finite failure NHPP for software failure analysis, the failure occurrence rate may be constant, monotonically increasing, or monotonically decreasing. In this study, based on the NHPP model and based on the software failure time data, we compared and analyzed the attributes of the software development cost model using the exponential distribution Rayleigh distribution and inverse exponential distribution considering the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution as the life distribution. The results of this study show that the Rayleigh model is the fastest release time and has the economic cost compared to the inverse-exponential model and the Goel-Okumoto model. Using the results of this study, it can be expected that software developers and operators will be able to predict the optimal release time and economic development cost.

  • Particle-size distributions (PSDs) are widely used for the estimation of soil hydraulic properties. The objective of this study was to select the best model among the nine PSD models with different underlying assumptions, by using a variety of Korean soils. The Fredlund model with four parameters, the logistic growth curve, and Weibull distribution model showed the highest performance compared to the other models with the majority of soils studied. It was interesting to find that the logistic growth function with no fitting parameters showed a great fitting performance.

  • This paper presents new compromise ALT plan which is applied to situations that true relationship between stress and parameters is not known exactly. The assumed failure distribution of this study is one of location-scale family, i. e., exponential, Weibull, and lognormal distributions which have been ones of the popular choices of failure distributions. The method of applying the stress is constant, and the censoring mechanism is Type I censoring. Compared with existing compromise plans under true simple linear model in terms of statistical efficiency, the efficiency of new compromise plan is better than the corresponding other compromise ones in most cases. For case when true model is quadratic, this plan can be used without any severe loss in statistical efficiency. The proposed new compromise ALT plan is illustrated with a numerical example and sensitivity analyses are conducted to study effects of pre-estimates of design parameters.

  • Purpose: Recently, Jiang defines the tradeoff B life to minimize a sum of life lost by preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) contribution parts and sets up an optimal replacement age of age replacement policy as this tradeoff life. In this paper, Jiang's model only considering the known lifetime distribution is extended by assigning different weights to two parts of PM and CM in order to reflect the practical maintenance situations in application. Methods: The new age replacement model is formulated and the meaning of a weight factor is expressed with the implied cost of failure under asymptotic expected cost model and also discussed with one-cycle expected cost criterion. Results: The proposed model is applied to Weibull and lognormal lifetime distributions and optimum PM replacement ages are derived with corresponding implied cost of failure. Conclusion: The new age replacement policy to escape the estimation of cost of failure in classical asymptotic expected cost criterion based on the renewal process is provided.
