Background: Weekend admission is known for having association with increased mortality attributed by poor quality of care and severe patients. We investigated the association between hospital admission on weekends and the in-hospital mortality rates of patients with cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, we examined this association stratified by admission via emergency room or not. Methods: We analyzed claim data provided by the Health Insurance Review & Assessment in 2013. In total, 80,817 cardiovascular patients were included in this study, which treated in-hospital mortality (early and during total length of stay) as a dependent variable. A generalized linear mixed effects model was used. We conducted subgroup analyses stratified by admission via emergency room or not. Results: Patients who admitted on weekend showed higher in-hospital mortality both early (odds ratio [OR], 1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.23-1.78) and during total length of stay (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.02-1.33) compared to those admitted on weekdays. Patients who were admitted to the hospital on a weekend by emergency room were more likely to experience early in-hospital mortality compared to those admitted on weekdays. Furthermore, we found that patients not admitted to the hospital through the emergency department were more likely to experience both early and total length of stay in-hospital mortality. Conclusion: Our study shows higher in-hospital mortality rates for cardiovascular patients admitted on weekends. Efforts to improve the quality of care on weekend are important to mitigate the 'weekend effect' and improve patient outcomes.
This study was designed to examine leisure time and leisure activities of homemakers and to predict future leisure time and future leisure time orientation. Present leisure time and future leisure time orientation were studied in relation to sociodemographic and physical environmental variables, time use variables and attitude variables. The major findings were the average daily housework time of homemakers was 6.5 hours on weekends. Housework time of employed homemakers was 3.5 hours and full-time homemakers was 8.0 hours. Daily leisure time of homemakers was 4.0 hours on weekdays and 4.8 hours o weekends. Most homemakers leisure activities on weekdays and weekends were reading, watching TV or listening to the radio and resting. In the future, they want to go hiking, hunting, traveling or fishing, attending concerts, drama or movies and playing sports games. The homemakers who felt their amount of present leisure time was sufficient were 35.4% and insufficient were 37.9%. Regarding the present leisure activities, 43.1% of homemakers expressed dissatisfaction, though 21.9% of them satisfied. Factors affecting the homemakers weekday leisure time were homemakers' occupation, family type, type of heating form house and cooking, weekday and weekend housework time of homemakers. Weekend leisure time interacted with family life cycle, number of children, income, education and occupation of homemakers, size of house, type of heating for house and cooking, weekday housework time of homemakers. housework time of employed housekeeper, husbands' weekend housework time, weekday leisure time of homemakers.

Objective: The term "weekend effect" refers to an increase in the mortality rate for hospitalizations occurring on weekends versus weekdays. In this study, we investigated whether such an effect exists in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (currently the standard treatment for this condition) at a single center in Japan. Methods: We surveyed 151 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (75 and 76 patients were treated during daytime and nighttime, respectively) from January 2019 to June 2021. The items evaluated in this analysis were the rate of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale, mortality, and procedural treatment time. Results: The rates of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale and mortality at 90 days after treatment did not differ significantly between daytime and nighttime (41.3% vs. 29.0%, p=0.11; 14.7% vs. 11.8%, p=0.61, respectively). The door-to-groin time tended to be shorter during daytime versus nighttime (57 [IQR: 42.5-70] min vs. 70 [IQR: 55-82]) min, p=0.0507). Conclusions: This study did not reveal differences in treatment outcome between daytime and nighttime in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Therefore, the "weekend effect" was not observed in our institution.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for air pollutant exposure modelling and understanding the contribution of respective microenvironments by assessing the time-activity patterns of Korean students according to variables such as grade, sex, weekday, and weekend. Methods: In this study, we compared the residential time of 521 (both weekday and weekend) lower elementary students, 1,735 (1,054 on weekdays, 681 on weekends) upper elementary students, 2,210 (1,294 on weekdays, 916 on weekends) middle school students, and 2,366 (1,387 on weekdays, 979 on weekends) high school students in different microenvironments according to grade, sex, weekday, and weekend. We used data from the 2014 Time-Use Survey by the Korean National Statistical Office for upper elementary students through high school students, and surveyed time-activity patterns of 521 lower elementary students aged 7-9 years. Each microenvironment was divided into indoor, outdoor, and transport. Indoor environments were divided into home, school, and other places. In addition, the results of previous studies were compared to this study. Results: Weekday time-activity patterns of Korean students indicated that lower elementary students spent $16.02{\pm}2.53hr$ in the home and $5.37{\pm}2.32hr$ in school. Upper elementary students spent $14.11{\pm}1.79hr$ in the home and $6.27{\pm}1.37hr$ in school. Middle school students spent $12.83{\pm}2.22hr$ in the home and $7.48{\pm}1.88hr$ in school. High school students spent $10.65{\pm}2.86hr$ in the home and $10.23{\pm}2.86hr$ in school on weekdays. High school students spent the least amount of time in the home and the most time in school compared to other grades Conclusions: Students spent most of their time indoors, including in the home, school, and other indoors. On weekdays, as the grade increases, home residential times were decreased and school residential times were increased. Differences in time-activity patterns according to sex were not found for either weekdays or weekends. It is estimated that Korean students could be affected by school indoor air quality. High school students could be most affected by school indoor air quality since they spent the most time at school.
This study examines the effects of time spent with parents and peers on generational differences in children's externalizing behavior problems in immigrant families. Using the Child Development Supplement and Time Diaries from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we found that first and second generation children exhibited fewer externalizing behavior problems than did third generation children, despite their lower socioeconomic status. First and second generation children spent more time with either one or both parents, and less time with peers, on the weekend day than did third generation children. We found a marginal but beneficial effect of time spent with fathers on the weekday, but not on the weekend day. The implications are that time spent with fathers on weekdays differs from time spent with fathers on the weekend, and that promoting immigrant father involvement on the weekday through school or community programs could benefit immigrant children.
The temperature changes are very important in improving the accuracy of the load forecasting during the summer. It is because the cooling load in summer contribute to the increasing of the load. This paper proposes a weekend load forecasting algorithm using the temperature change characteristic in a summer of Jeju. The days before and after weekends in Jeju, when the load curves are quite different from those of normal weekdays. The temperature change characteristic are obtained by using weekends peak load and high temperature data. And load forecasted based on the sensitivity between unit temperature changes and load variations. Load forecast data with better accuracy are obtained by using the proposed temperature changes than by using the ordinary daily peak load forecasting. The method can be used to reduce the error rate of load forecast.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate sleep habits, sleep disturbance, and circadian types, and to identify factors influencing sleep disturbance in nursing students. Methods: Participants were 140 senior nursing students. The data were collected from May 19 to 27, 2008 using self-report questionnaires. Results: 1) Evening type delayed sleep-wake schedules were more frequent than for morning type, especially during weekend and evening shift duty. 2) In total sleep time, there were no significant statistical differences between morning type and evening type during weekdays, weekend, day or evening shift duty. 3) On weekdays and day shift duty, the mean score for sleep disturbance was significantly higher in the evening type compared to the morning type. 4) Sleep disturbance in weekday and day shift duty was influenced by circadian types, eating habits, and gender. Conclusion: The circadian types are a very important factor for determining the sleep quantity and quality in nursing students.
This study is focused on the amount of time spent on child care by mothers with preschool children with developmental disabilities. It is designed to find out how much time mothers spend taking care of their children and to identify related factors. The subjects of this study are 162 mothers of children with developmental disabilities residing in Seoul. The findings are as follows: First, mothers with preschool children with developmental disabilities spent 6 hours and 50 minutes per day caring for their children during weekdays and 6 hours and 10 minutes on weekend days. This is double the amount of time spent by the average mother with preschool children. Second, mothers spent much more time caring for their disabled children than they do for their children without disabilities. Third, determinants of a mother's time for caring their disabled child during weekdays were mother's employment, the number of children, and gender of the disabled child. On weekend days, determinants of mother's care time were the number of children and husband's help for childrearing.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the physical activity level (PAL), the physical activity pattern and the energy expenditure in male and female elementary school soccer players using the accelerometer and the physical activity diary. Methods: Twenty-five (male 11, female 14) elementary school soccer players (9-12 years) participated in this study. During their daily activities, they wore an accelerometer for seven days (five weekdays and two weekend days) and completed the physical activity diary for three days (two weekdays and one weekend day). PAL was calculated by using the physical activity diary and three equations (Pate Preschool, Freedson Children, and Freedson) were used to calculate the intensity of physical activity and energy expenditure from the counts of accelerometer. Results: The average of physical activity by day of the week, CPM (Counts Per Minute) and METs (Metabolic Equivalents) were significantly higher in males ($723.3{\pm}149.2CPM$, $2.07{\pm}0.18METs$) compared to females ($505.6{\pm}119.9CPM$, $1.79{\pm}0.20METs$), but there was no significant difference in PAEE (Physical Activity Energy Expenditure) between the two groups (males: $15.5{\pm}9.1kcal/day$, females: $11.5{\pm}6.0kcal/day$). During weekdays, physical activity intensity was significantly higher in males compared to females at lunch time and training time than at other times. In both genders, the PAL was higher during weekdays (males 1.98, females 1.89) compared to weekend (males 1.62, females 1.61) (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our study observations suggest the necessity to develop an accelerometer equation for accurately evaluating the physical activity of elementary school athletes.
Objectives: This study aim to determine adolescent meal time, which provides the important context of parent-child sharing time. We divided mealtime into family meal and alone meal, and analyzed the time/space context of each meal time as well as the social determinations. Method: We employed adolescents age 10-18 who live with married patents and attends school at the present (n=5,128) from the original data of Korean Time Use Survey. Results: More adolescent were engaged in family meal rather than eating alone in daily bases. However, the trend show difference by day of week and academic grade; family meal are more prevalent in weekends rather than weekdays. As adolescent reaches high school age, the proportion of eating alone beats the proportion of family meal time. Most of the meal occur at home. Having meal outside was relatively scares, especially on weekdays. Tobit and logistic analysis reveal that, on weekday meal, less school hours, more time spent at the private academy, having family leisure event, and long mother's housework hours were positively associated with family meal time. In weekend model, father's education gradient was associated with family meal time, showing higher the father's education level, there were higher chance of having weekend family meal. As for the eating alone, relevant factors were similar with family meal but the directions were the opposite; having family leisure were negatively associated with alone meal, both weekdays and weekend. Long academy hours, meal preparing and leisure alone were positively associated eating alone. Overall, weekday meal time was strongly linked with adolescent daily schedules and time use, while for weekends meal, in both family meal and alone meal, the influence of parent factors were discovered. Conclusion: The results indicates that alone meal and the family meal are not exclusively related but seem to be complementary. Families tend to enjoy family meal yet, there are some necessary situation that adolescent need to be on their own. Increase in ready-made food industries, growing independence of children by age seem partly allow adolescent children to eat alone. Careful attentions may require for monitoring weekends meal situation and the family factor of adolescent in future studies.
