This research was carried out to determine the quantity and characteristics of broiler excreta produced in different age and different types of broiler house. Daily feed intakes of broiler chicks ranged over 160.1~165g/d in the sixth week of age. Female and male broiler consumed 211.3 and 252.9 $m\ell$/d of water in the period, respectively. The amount of excreta produced by female and male broiler was 164.3 and 176.3g/d/bid in the sixth week, but average daily excreta production from birth to the sixth week of age was 90.5g/bird. Accumulated excreta production of broiler per bird in the sixth week was 3,800g. The contents of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ in broiler excreta were 4.49, 1.28 and 2.02% in DM basis, respectively. The average moisture contents of litter produced from windowless broiler house, open-sided and vinyl house type broiler house were 18.3, 29.7 and 30.1%, respectively.
A $2{\times}3$ factorial design was used to study the impact of rearing systems, individual (I) vs. group (G) and different levels of milk/skim milk feeding (three schedules, F1, F2 and F3) on performance of crossbred (Bos indicus ${\times}$ Bos taurus) calves. Six calves (three from each sex) were taken in each group on the basis of their birth weight. All the calves were fed colostrum for three days and thereafter, were allotted to three different milk feeding schedules (F), i.e. milk fed upto 8 weeks of age (F1), milk upto 4 weeks followed by 50% (F2) and 100% (F3) replacement of milk with skim milk in the next 4 weeks. Calf starter and cereal green fodder were fed ad libitum to all the calves beginning from second week of age. A digestibility trial was conducted at 15th week of age to assess nutrient utilization during postweaning period. The digestibilty of dry matter (DM), organic matter, total carbohydrate, ether extract and crude protein (CP) were nonsignificant between the rearing systems and the feeding schedules. There was significantly higher digestibility of NDF and ADF in G than I and in F3 than F1 and F2. The concentration CP and total digestible nutrients of the diet ranged from 17.18 to 17.75% and 66.32 to 70.14%, respectively. The DM intake (kg/100 kg body weight) ranged from 1.74 to 2.14 kg during 0 to 8 weeks and 3.19 to 3.41 kg during 0 to 14 weeks of age. The effects during postweaning phase (9-14 weeks of age) showed increased performance in group housed calves compared to individually housed ones with a superior average daily gain (590 vs. 443 g) and dry matter intake (1.79 vs. 1.64 kg). Above all, replacement of milk with skim milk at 50% level after 4th week followed by complete removal after 6th week of age (F2) seemed to suit better in coping with immediate energy starvation due to sole feeding of skim milk (F3) and they performed the best under group housed system of rearing.
The aim of this research is to grasp the relation between lumbago incidence rate and research hypothesis in the effects of sex life of the middle-aged couples in Taejon area upon lumbago. And so, this writer had questionaired the 400 middle-aged couples in five gus, Taejon megalopolis -Jung-gu, Seo-gu, Dong-gu, Yuseong-gu, and Taedeok-gu - from April 21, 1998 to May 10, 1998. Of them, total 209 question papers were drawn back; male 102, female 107. Analysis of the data is as follows. 1. 145(69.37%) subjects of total 209 had experience in lumbago after their sexual lives. 2. In the number of sex life a week, one or two times of lumbago incidence rate were the most rate as 41.55% and each other had a statistically significant relation (P 0.01). 3. In age and lumbago incidence rate, their thirties was 37.75% and each other had a significant relation (P 0.05). 4. In weight and lumbago incidence rate, the level of $50kg{\sim}60kg$ was highest and each other didn't have a significant relation (P 0.05). 5. In the mean time of sexual life, the period of $11{\sim}20$ minutes was 29.47% and each other had a significant relation (P 0.01). 6. In week time zone of sexual life and lumbago incidence rate, midnight was the highest rate, 36.23% and each other didn't have a significant relation (P 0.05). 7. In the lumbago incidence rate according to bedroom structure of sexual life, a bed was 38.17% and each other had a significant relation (P 0.05). 8. In the lumbago incidence rate according to sexual posture, a normal position showed the highest rate, 46.12% and each other didn't have a significant relation (P 0.05). Putting the abovesaid results together, lumbago has relation to the number of sex life a week, age, the mean time of sexual life, and bedroom structure of sexual life. Therefore, it is thought that it is necessary that middle-aged couples periodically study the educational programs to make an education for lumbago prevention, etc. the key points.
To learn the developmental changes in intrinsic electrophysiological properties of the second order taste neurons, whole cell recordings from the developing nucleus of the solitary tract neurons were done in brainstem slices of postnatal rats. Rats aged from postnatal 0 to 21 days (P0-P21) were used, being divided into 3 age groups: postnatal first week (P0-P7 days), second week (P8-P14 days), and third week (P15-P21 days). Slices containing gustatory NTS were cut horizontally in the thickness of $300\;{\mu}m.$ Whole cell recordings were obtained from neurons in response to a series of hyperpolarizing and depolarizing current pulses. The intrinsic electrophysiological properties of the rostral NTS (rNTS) neurons were compared among the age groups. Depolarizing current pulses evoked a train of action potentials in all neurons of all age groups. The resting membrane potential and input resistance of the neurons did not show any significant differences during the postnatal 3 weeks. The time constant, however, decreased during the development. Duration of action potential measured at half maximum amplitude was longer in younger age groups. Both the maximum rate of rise and the maximum rate of fall in the action potential increased during the first 3 weeks postnatal. Electrophysiologically more than half neurons were type III. In summary, it is suggested that developmental changes in electrophysiological properties in rNTS occur during the first three weeks in rats.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of various feeding regimens on growth performance, nutrient digestibilities, nitrogen retention, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and feed cost in young pigs weaned at 21 days of age. One hundred twenty crossbred pigs (Landrace${\times}$Large White${\times}$Duroc, average 6.8 kg BW), weaned at 21 days of age, were allotted to 5 treatments in a 5 replicates by a randomized completely block (RCB) design. Treatments were as follow: 1) 1P (1-4 weeks: CP 23% and lysine 1.60%), 2) 2P-I (1 week: CP 23% and lysine 1.60%, 2-4 weeks: CP 21% and lysine 1.45%), 3) 2P-II (1-2 weeks: CP 23% and lysine 1.60%, 3-4 weeks: CP 21% and lysine 1.45%), 4) 2P-III (1-3 weeks: CP 23% and lysine 1.60%, 4 week: CP 21% and lysine 1.45%), 5) 3P (1 week: CP 23% and lysine 1.60%, 2-3 weeks: CP 21% and lysine 1.45%, 4 week: CP 19% and lysine 1.30%). Three different diets were formulated and supplied according to phase feeding programs. Diet 1 contains 23% crude protein and 1.60% lysine, diet 2 contains 21% crude protein and 1.45% lysine and diet 3 contains 19% crude protein and 1.30 lysine, respectively. Although there was no significant difference in growth performances, there was a beneficial effect of 3 phase feeding. The ADG was higher in 3P treatment than other treatments and it was observed clearly in late period (3-4 weeks) than in early period. Also, with increase in age, growth rate of pigs in 3P treatment was higher than that in 1P treatment approximately 37% (p=0.1379). There were no significant differences among all treatments in nutrient digestibility. The concentration of BUN was higher in pigs were fed diet containing 21% crude protein and 1.45% lysine (eg, 2P-1 and 3P) than those supplied diet containing high nutrient value at 2 week. The lowest feed cost/kg weight gain of pigs showed in 3P among treatments (p<0.05) whereas, high feed cost/kg weight gain of pigs was calculated in 1P and 2P-II treatments compared with 2P-I and 2 P-II (p<0.05), because of high milk products were used in those diet.
A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance of various Korean Native Chickens (KNC) for 64 weeks. Eight hundreds and ten KNC one-day birds were arranged to three strains, Dark Brown(D), Light Brown(L) and Black(B). Each strain had three replicates of 90 birds a replicate. Birds fed same diet with Korean standard feeding. Data were obtained growing performance to 20 week of age and laying performance from twenty one to sixty four week. During the growing stage from hatch to 20 week of age, there were not significant difference to three strains on viability, body weight and feed intake. L strain tended to be earlier 50% egg production day than that of other strains, but was not significantly different. Egg production of L strain was the highest of strains. It showed significantly higher egg production compared to that of D strain(P<0.05), but was not statistically different from that of B strain. Laying peak period was between 28 to 32 week of age in all strains, Egg weight was heavier in D strain(P<0.05). Feed intake was the same as 105g, and feed conversion improved in L strain(P<0.05). There were not difference on interior egg and eggshell quality by strains although eggshell thickness improved slightly in D strain. Fertility of D strain was the highest compared to others(P<0.05) regardless laying stages. Hatchability was not influenced by strains at 39 weeks old, but was significantly higher in B strain at 62 week of age(P< 0.05). The results of this experiment indicated that KNC 3 strains were not effect on egg production, feed intake and feed conversion ratio.

This study examined the caponization effects on the muscle characteristics (quality and quantity) of caponized male chickens fed before or after sexual maturity. Healthy and uniform Single Comb White Leghorn chickens were caponized at 3-week-old. Feeding was conducted until 16-week-old in trial 1 or from 12-week-old to 26-week-old in trial 2. Ten sham operated male chickens (Sham) were also assigned to each trial as the control group. Chickens used in both trials were housed in individual cages with each chicken representing one replicate. The results showed that early caponization (3-week-old) significantly increased (p<0.05) body weight and pectoral major muscle weight and percentage at 16-week-old compared to the Sham in trial 1. Caponization significantly increased (p<0.05) the protein content of the pectoral major muscle, but decreased (p<0.05) the ash content. Late caponization (12-week-old) significantly decreased (p<0.05) the ash content, myofibrillar ATPase activity and emulsification capacity of the pectoral major muscle in mature capons (26-week-old) compared to the Sham in trial 2. Early caponization (3-week-old) only increased the weight and protein content of the pectoral major muscle with decreased ash content in 16-week-old capons. Late caponization (12-week-old) showed no affects on pectoral major muscle quantity, while it decreased the ATPase activity and enhanced the emulsification capacity in mature (26-week-old) capons. Hence, the muscle quality improvement was shown as capons were fed to sexual maturity.
Recent reports revealed that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchangers and feet structures of sarcoplasmic reticulum(SR) are located in close vicinity in the specific compartment. Therefore, we investigated the possibility that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchanger may decrease the tension development by transporting the $Ca^{2+}$ out of the cell right after it released from SR, on the basis of this anatomical proximity. We exammined the negative force-frequency relationship of the developed tension in the electrically field stimulated left atria of postnatal developing rat(1, 3 day, 1 week and 4 week old after birth). Cyclopiazonic $acid(3{\times}10^{-5}\;M)$ treatment decreased the developed tension further according to postnatal age. $Monensin(3{\times}10^{-6}\;M)$ treatment did not increase the maximal tension in 4 week-old rat, preserving negative staircase, while the negative staircase in the younger rat were flattened. $Ca^{2+}$ depletion in the buffer elicited more suppression of the maximal tension according to the frequency in all groups except the 4 week-old group. The % decrease of the maximal developed tension of 4 week-old group at 1 Hz to that of 0.1 Hz after $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ depletion was only a half of those of the yonger groups. Taken together, it is concluded that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange transports more $Ca^{2+}$ released from SR out of the cell in proportion to the frequency, and this is responsible for the negative staircase effect of the rat heart.
This study was conducted to investigate the laying period performance of two crossbred Korean native chicken (KNC) grand parent stock (GPS) layer during 20 to 40 weeks. A total of 351 20-week-old KNC GPS were allocated in a completely randomized design to give 4 birds per each cage. The chickens were fed commercial diets [i.e., week 20 - 32, crude protein (CP) 18.0% and metabolizable energy (ME) 2,850 kcal/kg; week 32 - 40, CP 17.0% and ME 2,800 kcal/kg)] and fresh water during the whole experiment period ad libitum basis. Body weight, age of sexual maturity, egg weight, hen-day egg production (HDP) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured during the experiment period (week 20 - 40). The results show no significant difference in the Body weight, age of sexual maturity, egg weight, and hen-day egg production (HDP) except for egg weight. 1B had a higher egg weight on week 36 only. We expect that the reason why most factors showed no significant difference is the lack of nutrients caused by limited feeding which follows the standard feeding system for the grand-parent stock. These results provide basic information for laying data in 2-way crossbred Korean native chickens.

To investigate the histogenesis of tracheal epithelium in Sprague-Dawley strain rat, the author has used the fetal rats at the 16th, 18th, 20th and 22nd prenatal day and neonatal rats at the 1st and 7th day as well as rats at age of 5, 10 and 15 weeks after birth as experimental animals. Specimens were double stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate for electron microscopic study. The results obtained were as follows; 1. At the 16th day of gestational age, ciliated cells were found in tracheal epithelium and light and dark ciliated cells possessing numerous mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm at the 22nd day of gestational age of the rat are observed. 2. At the 16th day of gestataional age, basal cells lying upon the basement membrane and having large numbers of glycogen particles in the cytoplasm, were found and at the 22nd day of gestational age, basal cells possessing numerous polysomes in the cytoplasm were observed. 3. At the 20th gestational age of the rat, microvillous cells possessing many rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria as well as microvilli protruding into the lumen were found in tracheal epithelium. 4. At the 5th week after birth brush cell having profound filamentous strands and many pinocytic vesicles in the cytoplasm, was visible in the tracheal epithelium. 5. At the 15th week after birth large proportions of tracheal epithelium were lined with ciliated cells. Cosequently it is suggested that pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium was differentiated at the 16th day of gestational age, in addition cytoplasmic organelles of the microvillous and basal cells were matured at the 20th and 22nd gestational age, respectively and most of the part of the tracheal epithelium was lined with ciliated cells at the 15th week after birth.
