  • In this study, in order to design a wedge-type anchor that can hold an wide carbon plate with a width of 100 mm or more that can be used in a bridge structure, the mechanical behaviors are evaluated based on the main design variables such as the angle of the wedge and the coefficient of friction between the guide and the wedge. The stress state of the carbon plate was calculated by numerical analysis method for each design variable, and the performance of the anchor in the critical state was evaluated according to the failure criteria for composite material, and the optimal design specifications of the anchor were determined based on numerical results. The performance of the optimally designed anchor was verified through actual experiments, and the results of this study are considered to be useful for the optimal design of the CFRP plate anchor to reinforce large structures.

  • This study is to investigate the tensile properties of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) reinforcing bars with various kinds of anchor systems experimentally. Three types of anchor systems were examined: resin sleeve anchor adopted by CSA Standard, metal overlay anchor by ASTM Standards and wedge anchor normally used in prestressing tendons. Also, three different types of GFRP bars with different surface deformations were tested in this study. All test procedures including specimens preparation, test apparatus and measuring devices were made according to the recommendations of CSA Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found that the highest tensile strength of GFRP bar was developed by resin sleeve anchor, and tensile strength of GFRP bar with CSA anchor system is $10\%$ higher than that with ASTM anchor system in the case of sand-coated GFRP bar.

  • The anchor is used extensively for a cutting slope, an earth retaining wall, an uplift resistance of sub-structures and so on at civil engineering projects and is classified by aim in use, tendon material, and ground/tension fixing type. It can be distinguished extensively into friction type, bearing type, and complex type by ground fixing type. Generally, bond length of friction type anchor has application to 3~10m depending on the friction-resistance characteristics. In this study, 'DEW(double enlargement wedge) bearing type anchor' of new concept is devised. The bond length is about 0.6~0.8m. It can be used on the ground to have the strength characteristics above it of weathered rock. There are merits which are 'period reduction' and 'cost saving' through the minimum of the boring length. In addition, it is so called environmentally friendly Methods because it can reduce the quantity of carbon dioxide through the reducing drilling machine operation time.

  • Mechanical anchorage devices are generally tested in the laboratory and may be analyzed using the finite element method. These devices are composed of many components interacting through diverse contact interfaces. Generally, a Coulomb friction law is sufficient to take into account friction between smooth surfaces. However, in the case of mechanical anchorages, a gripping system, named herein the wedge-tendon system, is used to anchor the prestressing tendon. The wedge inner surface is made of a series of triangular notches designed to grip the tendon. In this particular case, the Coulomb law is not adapted to simulate the contact interface. The present paper deals with a new constitutive contact/gripping law to simulate the gripping effect. A parameter identification procedure, based on experimental results as well as on a finite element/neural network approach, is presented. It is demonstrated that all parameters have been selected in a satisfactory way and that the proposed constitutive law is well adapted to simulate the wedge gripping effect taking place in a mechanical anchorage device.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates can be used more efficiently in strengthening applications by applying prestress to the CFRP laminates. A key problem for prestressing with CFRP laminates is anchoring the laminates. These may include fracture to the CFRP laminates due to excessive gripping force or slippage of the CFRP laminates out of the anchorage zone caused by low friction between the anchor device and the lamiantes. The main objective of this study is the development of an applicative wedge-type anchorage system for prestressed CFRP laminates through experimental study. The experimental parameters were the type of anchorage and the effect of elastic modulus of tab. The test results showed that the developed anchor assures 100% CFRP laminate strength.

  • In this study, an innovative anchoring approach has been developed dealing with all relevant aspects in consideration of previous works. An ultimate pulling force calculation of anchor is presented from a geotechnical point of view. The proposed umbrella anchor focuses not only on the friction resistance capacity, but also on the axial capacity of the composite end structure and the friction capacity occurring around the wedge. Even though the theoretical background is proposed, in-situ application requires high-level mechanical design. Hence, the required parts have been carefully improved and are composed of anchor body, anchor cap, connection brackets, cutter vanes, open-close ring, support elements and grouting system. Besides, stretcher element made of aramid fabric, interior grouting system, guide tube and cable-locking apparatus are the unique parts of this design. The production and placement steps of real sized anchors are explained in detail. Experimental results of 52 pullout tests on the weak dry soils and 12 in-situ tests inside natural soil indicate that the proposed approach is conservative and its peak pullout value is directly limited by a maximum strength of anchored soil layer if other failure possibilities are eliminated. Umbrella anchor is an alternative to conventional anchor applications used in all types of soils. It not only provides time and workmanship benefits, but also a high level of economic gain and safe design.

  • As larger ships and floating offshore structures are, and rougher the marine environment becomes nowadays, a drag embedment type anchor of more stable performance and higher holding power is requested. This paper describes an experimental study of the drag embedding motion and the resultant holding force of three types of drag embedment type anchor model (HALL, AC-14, SEC POOL-N, scale 1/10).

  • Concrete wedge anchor is one of structural components to transfer load of an object attached to a primary structure. Recently, as retrofitting concrete structure is becoming a main issue, mechanical capacity of the anchor should be secured enough. In spite of the structural safety of Cast-in-place anchor, Post-installed anchor is more widely used with ease of placement or change of construction method. However, the post-installed anchors domestically produced have excessive coefficient of variation over 15% of ultimate tensile strength, which yields deteriorated quality in tensile strength. In this research, tensile strength test of anchors, which have improved sleeve and header and produced by a domestic company, was conducted for two variables, concrete strength and effective embedment depth. As a result, enough coefficients of variations were secured in all specimens. Also, in comparison to foreign products, the domestic ones have equal or higher performance.

  • This study concerns the prediction of shear capacity, as governed by concrete breakout failure of the anchors under load applied angle and an group anchors at an edge and installed in uncracked, unreinforced concrete. For this purpose, the methods to evaluate the shear capacity of the anchors in concrete are summarized and the experimental data are compared with capacities by the two present methods: the method of ACI 349-90 and concrete capacity design (CCD) method.

  • Anchorage devices play an important role in post-tensioned bridge structures since they must sustain heavy loads in order to permit the transfer of the prestressing force to the structure. In external prestressing, the situation is even more critical since the anchorage mechanisms, with the deviators, are the only links between the structure and the tendons throughout the service life of the structure. The behaviour of anchorage devise may be studied by using the finite element method. To do so, each component of the anchorage must be adequately represented in order to approximate the anchor mechanism as accurately as possible. In particular, the modelling of the jaw/tendon device may be carried out using the real geometry of these two components with an appropriate constitutive contact law or by replacing these components by a single equivalent. This paper presents the numerical study of a mono-strand anchorage device. The results of a comparison between two different representations of the jaw/tendon device, either as two distinct components or as a single equivalent, will be examined. In the double-component setup, the influence of the wedge configuration composing the jaw, and the influence of lubrication of the anchor, will be assessed.
