  • This paper discusses the development of an educational web-based power flow program for undergraduate students. The interaction between lectures and users can be much enhanced via the web-based programs which result in the student's learning effectiveness on the power flow problem. However the difficulties for developing web-based application programs are that there can be the numerous unspecified users to access the application programs. To overcome the aforementioned multi-users problem and to develope the educational web-based power flow program, we have revised the system architecture, the modeling of application programs, and database which efficiently and effectively manages the complex data sets related to the power flow analysis program. The developed application program is composed of the physical three tiers where the middle tier is logically divided into two kinds of application programs. The divided application programs are interconnected by using the Web-service based on XML (Extended Markup Technology) and HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) which make it possible the distributed computing technology Also, this paper describes the method of database modeling to handle effectively when the numerous users change the parameters of the power system to compare the results of the base case.

Web Resources Based Collection Development for Digital Libraries (디지털 도서관의 웹자원 기반 장서개발)

  • Web-based information resources should be managed and used methodically in the same manner as the paper-based resources are managed and used. It is necessitated by the prevalence of web-based delivery of a variety of information. To develop a web-based digital collection, it is critical to establish a set of standardized evaluation criteria for web-resources. The evaluation criteria needs to include authority, trustworthy, reliability, functionality, relatedness, accessibility, structure, design, user support, and security related matters. However, it is also necessary to have certain flexibility to either emphasize or include particular evaluation criteria to reflect varying characteristics of the web resources especially for the purpose of developing an effective digital collection. In addition, it is essential to review the evaluation criteria with respect to value, demand, duplication prevention, and intellectual property, which are relevant to the web-based digital collection development. Finally, various strategies were suggested as means to develop more effective web-based digital resource collection. These strategies include organizing a selection committee to ensure the objectivity and consistency in web-resource evaluation; developing a model for web-based digital resource collection; sharing new standards, protocols, markups, and metadata with other digital libraries; and developing user-centered digital resource collection.

  • We developed a Web courseware using multimedia based on STS(Science-Technology-Society) and constructivism on fossil of fourth grade natural science in Primary school, which is recognized to be hard to simulate and watch the phenomena in real life. At present, there are several researches manifesting the effectiveness of the theory with off-line instructional materials. However, there are few results which demonstrate its ability on the Web. The main objective of the paper is to apply the STS theory on a Web courseware and to observe its efficacy. The Web courseware based on the theory allows students to observe and experiment in the Web environment and to have diverse experiences and thoughts through communication via Web. The paper shows that Web courseware based on STS theory can improve its effectiveness in a collaborative learning environment by providing Web facilities such as E-mail, Web search, information sharing, chatting, and so on.

  • The Semantic web service is able to intelligently discover, execute, composite and monitor the Web Service. It constructs the ontology on Web Service and describes the Semantic Markup in the machine-readable form. The currently developing technologies of the Semantic Web Service discovery are DAML-S matchmaker in Carnegie Mellon University, Process Handbook in MIT and etc. In this paper, we propose the ontology language based on Topic Maps that supports the benefits and solves the problems of the Semantic Web Service discovery technologies .

  • Main goal of web recommendation system is to study how user behavior on a website can be predicted by analyzing web log data which contain the visited web pages. Many researches of the web recommendation system have been studied. To construct web recommendation system, web mining is needed. Especially, web usage analysis of web mining is a tool for recommendation model. In this paper, we propose web recommendation system using grid based support vector machines for improvement of web recommendation system. To verify the performance of our system, we make experiments using the data set from our web server.

  • Many web-based learning systems have been developed and used widely. But it is known that web-based courses have higher drop out rate. Prior studies in classroom-based courses have shown there is a high correlation between student satisfaction and retention. This paper examines the developed web based self-regulated learning system and analyze self-regulated learning factors. We have derived key factors and their relationship that affect student satisfaction in web-based learning. The key factors are Self-evaluating, Goal setting & Planning, Seeking information, Seeking social assistance and Reviewing records. We found the key factors will help retention in web-based learning.

  • As the use of computers and internet service has increased fast, various web-based coursewares for the educational purpose have been devoloped. However, the development of web-based coursewares for old-aged adults is far from satisfactory. Since most existing web-based coursewares are designed for the youth, they are not proper for old aged people to use confidently. In this paper, we analyse psychological, social and physical characteristics of old aged adults and propose the starategy for designing web based coursewares for them. Then, We apply the design strategy to develop the web-based courseware in Excel subject and analyse the effect of the design strategy by means of questioning and answring.

Elementary Student's Reasoning Patterns Represented in Constructing Models of 'Food Web and Food Pyramid' ('먹이 그물과 먹이 피라미드' 모형 구성에서 나타난 초등학생의 추론 유형)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore ecological concepts, epistemological reasoning and reasoning processes through constructing 'food web and food pyramid' in ecology. We conducted classes which involved a 'food web and food pyramid' for $6^{th}$ grade students. Each class is constructed of small groups to do modeling and epistemological reasoning through communication. The researcher had videotaped and recorded each class and have made transcription about classes. We analysed patterns of 'food web and food pyramid models' and reasoning processes according to scientific epistemology using transcription data and student outputs. As a result, students represented phenomenon-based reasoning, relation-based reasoning and model-based reasoning in scientific epistemology from their modeling. Students usually did relation-based reasoning and model-based reasoning in food web which explains ecological phenonenon, while they usually did model-based reasoning in food pyramid which expects ecological phenomenon. Student's reasoning can be limited when they have misconception of scientific knowledge and are limited by fragmentary knowledge. This represents that students has to do relation-based reasoning and model-based reasoning is beneficial in their ecological model. It also suggests that students need to define correct-conception related to ecological modeling(food web, food pyramid).

  • Among the mainstream of this society has quickly adopted computer technology as part of their daily life, the ever growing group of elderly people, which will increase from 7% of the population in 2000 to being 14% just 18 years later, has been being exposed to computer using environment more than ever before. According to the survey of Korean government in 2005, the number of the elderly using computer has been rising actually, so web-based survey to identify housing needs of the elderly seems to have lots of possibilities as a useful tool for them. This study aims at comparing web-based survey tool with paper-based one, developed to identify the elderly needs on digital home planning. Experimental method and in-depth interview were employed. The participants were divided into 2 groups, web-based and paper-based survey group. Each group was controlled over by age (average 60 years old), gender and computer skill. As a results, web-based survy tool was revealed as effective to clearer understanding and causing more interests and more available, but less easy to handle than paper-based survey one. Through the in-depth interview, web-based survey tool was identified as a more effective method to figure out the needs of the elderly who are familiar with computer.

  • Web services are the core technology for changing from traditional web to SOA(Service Oriented Architecture) based Web. It is time to adapt the web services to Mobile Devices such as PDA, smart phone and so on. Specially Korea has an efficient mobile environments that is based on CDMA. That is suitable for evaluating the web services in mobile environments. This paper explains a framework of mobile web services based on intermediaries. Intermediaries support various enhanced functionality for mobile environments.
