  • This paper presents an investigation on the shear resistance of corrugated web steel beams (CWBs) with a circular web opening. A total of five specimens with different diameters of web openings were designed and tested with vertical load applied on the top flange at mid-span. The ultimate strengths, failure modes, and load versus middle displacement curves were obtained from the tests. Following the tests, numerical models of the CWBs were developed and validated against the test results. The influence of the web plate thickness, steel grade, opening diameter, and location on the shear strength of the CWBs was extensively investigated. An XGBoost machine learning model for shear resistance prediction was trained based on 256 CWB samples. The XGBoost model with optimal hyperparameters showed excellent accuracy and exceeded the accuracy of the available design equations. The effects of geometric parameters and material properties on the shear resistance were evaluated using the SHAP method.

  • The purpose of this study is to formulate the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with open ribs according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. Analyzed results of various plates stiffened with rectangular and reverse T ribs show that the effect of the lower flange to the local behavior is very small, so the local behavior can be expressed by ratio functions of the rib space, web thickness, web height and plate thickness and the ratio functions of rectangular and reverse T ribs can be unioned. The application of ratio functions to other types of stiffened plates shows that the increment of the error ratio is so small compared with examples of this study that the applicability of this study is proved.

  • When hot-rolled wide flanges are used as vertical compressive or bending member, opening web are often to take a space for equipments of pipe or duct. The Web of hot-rolled wide flange steel with opening may be analyzed as a rectangular plate, subjected to in plane force, and the buckling load is governed by the ultimate force of web. The result of the theory showed close agreement with the result of the finite element analysis. It was also shown that the buckling loads of stiffened opening plates could be larger than those of the plate. The stiffened opening plates for the 4-side simply supported case showed more stiffening effect than the Two Opposite Elastic Supports and Two Other Opposite Simply Supports case. In this study, we proposed the effective opening sizes that buckling loads of stiffened opening plate could be greater than those of the plates.

  • Steel plate shear wall (SPSW) system has been increasingly used for lateral loads resisting system since 1980s when the utilization of post-buckling strength of SPSW was realized. The structural response of SPSWs largely depends on the behavior of the surrounded beams. The beams are normally required to behave in the elastic region when the SPSW fully buckled and formed the tension field action. However, most modern design codes do not specify how this requirement can be achieved. This paper presents theoretical investigation and design procedures of manually calculating the plastic flexural capacity of the beams of SPSWs and can be considered as an extension to the previous work by Qu and Bruneau (2011). The reduction in the plastic flexural capacity of beam was considered to account for the presence of shear stress that was altered towards flanges at the boundary region, which can be explained by Saint-Venant's principle. The reduction in beam web was introduced and modified based on the research by Qu and Bruneau (2011), while the shear stress in the web in this research is excluded due to the boundary effect. The plastic flexural capacity of the beams is given by the superposition of the contributions from the flanges and the web. The developed equations are capable of predicting the plastic moment of the beams subjected to combined shear force, axial force, bending moment, and tension fields induced by yielded infill panels. Good agreement was found between the theoretical results and the data from previous research for flexural capacity of beams.

  • Traditional beam connections to the minor axis of a column have relatively low strength and stiffness. A modified detail, using a plate welded between the toes of the column flange - referred to as a toe plate connection - is examined in this paper. The results of an experimental investigation for both flush and extended end-plate connections connected to a 25 mm thick end-plate are presented. The tests are complemented by finite element modelling which compares very well with the test observations. The results show a significant increase in both moment resistance and initial stiffness for this connection detail compared with connections made directly to the column web. This offers the prospect of more optimal solutions taking advantage of partial strength frame design for the minor axis as well as major axis.

  • The buckling behavior of the web of steel girders are largely dependent on the size and the location of stiffeners and the restraining effect of top and bottom flanges. Elastic and inelastic buckling analyses based or the Spline Finite Strip Method were executed to study the stiffening effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders and to find how the top and bottom flanges had effects on the web, where geometric boundary conditions were limited by both hinged, both fixed and the flange sections. The basic assumption for the longitudinal end boundary conditions was that the vertical stiffeners had the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the junction line between web and vertical stiffener was assumed to be hinged boundary conditions. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffener of the plate and box girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1995) and AASHTO Specifications(1994 LRFD) were compared with the results obtained numerically for the various longitudinal stiffener size of box girders. Simple equations and design curves for the longitudinal stiffener of the web were proposed for the practical use.

  • This paper presents the results of an elastic buckling analysis of elastically restrained orthotropic plate with a longitudinal stiffener under in-plane linearly distributed load. It is assumed that the loaded edges of web plate are simply supported and other two edges are elastically restrained against rotation. The stiffener is modeled as a beam element and its torsional rigidity is neglected. For the buckling analysis Lagrangian multiplier method is employed. The effects of restraint and longitudinal stiffener are presented in a graphical form.

  • Experiments have been carried out on six composite and two plain steel plate girders under shear loading to understand the elastic and inelastic behaviour of such girders. The failure mechanism assumed and used to develop design equations is normally based on the failure patterns observed in the experiments. Therefore, different types of cracks and failure patterns observed in the experiments are reviewed briefly first. Based on the observed failure patterns, a design method to predict the ultimate shear capacity of composite plate girders is proposed in this paper. The values of ultimate shear capacity obtained using the proposed design method are compared with the corresponding experimental values and it is found that the proposed method is able to predict the shear capacity accurately.

  • In this paper an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic shear buckling behavior of transversely stiffened orthotropic plate under in-plane shear forces is presented. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and the evenly placed stiffener is considered as a beam element neglecting its torsional rigidity. For the solution of the problem Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. Using the derived equation, the limit of buckling stress of transversely stiffened plate is suggested as a graphical form. Based on the limit of buckling stress of stiffened plate, graphical form of results for finding the required stiffener rigidity is presented when one and two stiffeners are located, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was the Development of Retrofit Method for Beam Using Steel Plate Reinforced by Fiber Sheet.1. Additional reinforcements are not needed in the joining area of slab and beam web.2. Beam using carbon fiber reinforced plastic displays low effects in shearing effect.3. Beams reinforced steel plate by epoxy effect the capacities of strength. But the capacities of strength are rapidly reduced when adhesive surface be omitted. Thus details are needed in this case.4.Retrofit method for beam using steel plate reinforced by fiber sheet with epoxy rosin improves the capacities of strength and the initial stiffness, shows a large transformation since the maximum load likewise may be excellent to the shearing reinforcement.
