A Study of Legal Issues for Web Archiving (웹 아카이빙의 법.제도적 문제에 대한 고찰 - 웹 정보자원의 특성을 중심으로 -)

  • In terms of archiving. an importance of the Web is more increasing. Since the Internet has been popularized. many archivists have made efforts to preserve informational. cultural. and evidential values of the Web. Information resources on the Web raise archival issues that are significantly different from issues of preservation for tangible materials, because they are based on unique characteristics of the Web. One of issues is about a technical aspect which is based on technical architecture of Web. Another important issue is related to legal problems including copyright, authenticity and so on. In this context. it is essential to understand technical and legal characteristics of the Web. A purpose of this article is to review technical and legal aspects of Web archiving and to find an agenda for development of Web archiving.

Metadata Design for Archiving Public Deep Web Records (공공기관 심층 웹기록물 아카이빙을 위한 메타데이터 설계)

  • According to the development of web sites' technologies, public institutions use web sites to carry out their business and also to utilize as pathway between government and the people also. Public web records means the result of business process over web sites in public institutions. Although there is much valuable information, it is vanished away easily because there is not yet proper methods and tools for preservation. The purpose of this paper is to design the metadata elements required when archiving deep web records, which is a kind of web records. For that, we first analyze oversea's related researches to define what public deep web records is. Then we define metadata elements about that and also explain the relationship on archival information package in Korea and dublin core metadata to support interoperability for them. The defined metadata can be used for the basis technologies in archiving domestic public web records.

A Study of Digital Archiving Policies for National S&T Information Resources (과학기술 분야 디지털 아카이빙을 위한 정책연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the directions for building national digital archiving strategies. This present paper begins with surveying S&T information resources especially in public sector, and analyse the priority criteria for appraising and selecting the resources for long-term preservation. Emphasis is placed on identifying the critical tasks for each type of resources including scientific data, technical reports, theses, journal, web, e-prints, etc. and some levels of organizations in the national digital archiving framework. Based on the analysis, it suggests some strategic agenda for developing national digital archiving system.

  • This study aims to provide the efficient sharing and utilization method of disasters scattered by each institution and develop automated collection algorithm using web crawler for disaster information in deep web accounts. To achieve these goals, this study analyzes the logical structure of the deep web and develops algorithms to collect the information. With the proposed automatic algorithm, it is expected that disaster management will be helped by sharing and utilizing disaster safety information.

  • The need for and importance of preserving various information resources on the web is constantly increasing. In addition to traditional types of records, the web contains communication records displaying various people's diverse viewpoints and connecting an event to its context. In particular, information resources produced during a disaster must be collected for long-term preservation. The "OASIS Disaster Archive" is a service provided through OASIS, which was developed and is managed by the National Library of Korea, to collect and preserve online information resources related to the recent disaster events in Korea. This study examines the characteristics and current status of the contents of the Disaster Archive to make suggestions for its improvements.

  • OASIS(Online Archiving & Searching Internet Sources) is a web archiving project of the National Library of Korea started in 2004 to systematically collect, manage, and preserve online digital information resources. In this study, the following problems were derived by analyzing the access log of the OASIS website and conducting a user survey. First, people's awareness of the OASIS project was very low, and there were many first-time visitors to the website. Second, active promotion and service reorganization to improve the use of OASIS was insufficient. The study suggested that the improvement point of this was to strengthen its own direct promotion and indirect promotion in connection with other agencies. In addition, it was proposed to enhance the service through user-customized services and to reinforce content that induces interest and fun.

  • As a mixture of both words 'Web' and 'Cartoon'. Webtoon is a sort of cartoons that come up with development of information technology. Web-toon is not just a cartoon but an OSMU for culture industries such as movies, dramas, games and more. While Web-toon's value is increasing, activities of securing and managing it as archives seem quite slow. To preserve web-toon as a web archives and digital contents which has long-term archival value effectively web archiving system should be required. This study analyzes webtoon's type and features. Also, requirements for web archiving system are extracted from case analysis of existing digital archives. With the results, this study proposes a method to design and implement web-toon archives based on OAIS reference model.

  • Life science is one of the most important fields which have direct influence on human life. Many domestic life scientists in the industries, educational organizations and research institutes have been producing important results in a variety of forms such as papers, research notes, presentation materials, books and teaching materials. Open Archiving Community has been constructed in order to share and exchange research information related to life science between researchers. The domestic life scientists can acquire valuable information through the community quickly and efficiently. In this study, the community system has been designed and implemented to provide free access to all data including metadata registry of the bibliographic information on life science and research results accumulated by researchers of their own accord. The community system also has been designed and implemented based on Web 2.0 and provides users with BBS by subjects.

DEVELOPMENTS OF ASTRONOMICAL IMAGE ARCHIVING SYSTEM (천문 이미지 디지털 아카이빙 시스템 개발)

  • An archiving system designed to enable documenting database of astronomical images, with functions of search and download, is being developed by Korean Astronomical Data Center(KADC) of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute(KASI). The system consists of three PCs for web server, database server, and system management server. The search program for the web environment is operated in the web server. In the management server, several utility program we developed are installed: input program for the database, program for transfer from fits to jpg files, program for data recovery and management, and programs for statistics and connect management. The collected data would be sorted out by the system manager to input into the database. The online input is possible in an observatory where the data is produced. We applied the content management system(CMS) module for the database management. On the basic of CMS module, we set up a management system for the whole life cycle of metadata from creation and collection to storage and deletion of the data. For the search function, we employed a technique to extract indices from the metadata. In addition, MySQL is adopted for DBMS. We currently display about 2,700 and 25,000 photographs for astronomical phenomena and astronomical objects on the data, respectively.
