  • In this study, the characteristics of particle crash of decomposed granite soil sampled at Pocheon area were presented. The degree of weathering was artificially achieved by means of hydrofluoric acid. Weathering index was firstly determined by the analysis of mineral composition. Then, particle distribution, permeability tests were conducted. The results showed that weathering effects on particle crash over entire particle sizes. Comparative analysis on specific surface between $D_{10}$ and $D_{50}$ indicated that the smaller the particle size, the more the particle crash. In addition, the most particle crashing due to compaction appeared around the optimum moisture content. The incremental ratio of specific surface appeared to decrease as weathering proceeds, which means that the higher the weathering index the less the particle crash.

  • Basic design concept of the future steel structure requires environmental compatibility and maintenance free capability to minimize economic burdens. Recent trends in alloy design for advanced weathering steel include addition of various alloying elements which can enhance formation of stable and protective rust layer even in polluted urban and/or high $Cl^{-}$ environment. The effects of Ca, Ni, W, and Mo addition on the corrosion property of Ca-modified weathering steel were evaluated through a series of electrochemical tests (pH measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy: EIS) and structural analysis on rust layer formed on the steel surface. Ca-containing inclusions of Ca-Al-Mn-O-S compound are formed if the amount of Ca addition is over 25 ppm. Steels with higher Ca content results in higher pH value for condensed water film formed on the steel surface, however, addition of Ni, W, and Mo does not affect pH value of the thin water film. The steels containing a high amount of Ca, Ni, W and Mo showed a dense and compact rust layer with enhanced amount of ${\alpha}-FeOOH$. Addition of Ni, W and Mo in Ca-modified weathering steel shows anion-selectivity and contributes to lower the permeability of $Cl^{-}$ ions. Effect of each alloying element on the formation of protective rust layer will be discussed in detail with respect to corrosion resistance.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate that the relations of weathering speed and shear strength of granite soil by tracing the weathering depth of granite soil from the very moment of its cutting. The results obtained this follows ; 1) The relationships among Nc, Li and CEC, Li>6%, CEC>14 corresponds to Nc=2~30, and 4%${\phi}$)increases at a standard pressure. 3) And Nc=0~50 corresponds to $27{\sim}50^{\circ}$ of internal fiction angle and to 12~49kPa of cohesion. That is to say, internal friction angle(${\phi}$)corresponds better than cohesion(c). In conclusion, this study suggests that in simplified dynamic cone penetration test a penetration boundary line of 5 centimeters is decided at around Li=4%, CEC=3(meq/100g) which is classified as a completely weathering soil. It also appears that CEC increases as Li increases while Nc decreases.

  • This study was carried out to increase the efficiency of site investigation through the evaluation of the applicable methods of investigation for cutting slope design. In an effort to find out the applicability of the method employed during the slope investigation, some tests were carried out on 6 subjects i.e location of weak zones, characteristics of discontinuities, distribution of strata, in situ tests for geo-technical properties, laboratory test and estimation of weathering. The method was highly applicable and produced expected results during the test of weak zones, discontinuities and distribution of strata. In order to apply the method to in- situ test for geo-technical properties and laboratory test on soil and rock slope, a statistic analysis of the existing data were required in advance. However its design applicability on rock slope was good although actual cases of application were not many due to limitation of the cases for investigation. The method was frequently referenced but not actually applied for anti seismic design test and estimation of weathering.

  • A series of laboratory tests (physical and mechanical index and engineering design) were conducted on undisturbed granite soils of CW and RS weathering grades in Korea. From these testes it can be concluded that most of physical and mechanical index values are very sensitive to change in weathering grade from CW to RS. Engineering design tests indicate that the unconfined compressive strength and the shear strength parameters are significantly reduced and that the soil becomes ductile and plastic with increasing weathering and saturation. It was found that weathered granite soils have the special characteristics when water saturated: (i) they significantly lose their shear strength(especially cohesion) and unconfined compressive strength, (ii) they are fragile and their grains break down in water as observed in grain size analysis.

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of chemical weathering on the granite and orthogneiss in Wonju area based on accelerated artificial chemical weathering. The rock samples were scrutinized the variation of index properties and ion exchanges caused by artificial chemical weathering which was implemented with leaching test for 170 days using double soxhlet extractor. The differential weathering and decrease of p wave velocity were obtained by weathering process without significant changes of porosity. In case of granite samples, the uniaxial compression strength was reduced by 20% and 16% for the F-grade and SW-grade, respectively. For MW-grade granite, however, was not able to examine the effect of strength reduction due to lack of sample number. Also, for orthogneiss, it is difficult to compare the values of uniaxial compressive strength between before and after the test because of its strong anisotropy.

  • As part of a fundamental characterization for subsurface layers in Korea, the weathering degree and shear wave velocity ($V_S$) were evaluated from the X-ray fluorescence analyses and the site investigations containing boring and in-situ seismic tests, respectively, for decomposed granite layer in Hongsung. The subsurface layers at Hongsung were composed of 10 to 40 m thickness of weathered layer in most sites. According to the results of weathering degree analyses in Hongsung, it was examined that three chemical weathering indexes such as MWPI, VR and WIP generally increased with decreasing depth. From the in-situ seismic tests, the $V_S$ was determined as the range between 200 and 500 m/s in weathered layer. Based on the $V_S$ and N value at borehole seismic testing sites, N-$V_S$ correlations were established for weathered layer. Furthermore, the relationships of three representative weathering indexes with the $V_S$ and N value indicated that the MWPI, WIP and 100/VR increased linearly as increasing $V_S$ and exponentially as increasing N value.

  • It is important to evaluate rock strength in order to check stability of a rock slope or to design a structure built on rock. However, test methods used for the evaluation have some difficulties since rock samples provide various deviation of strength due to micro cracks in the samples and teat errors, Also, reliable data have not been accumulated for the rock strength in Korea. Therefore, simple teat methods that can be used easily for investication of rock strength in field or in laboratory are not provided sufficiently yet. This study is to investigate variation of the rock strength due to the degree of weathering and to evaluate the degree of weathering by types of rocks, by using data that have been obtained for several years. Therefore, it is possible to provide a relationship between several rock strength values by performing tests such as uniaxial compression teat, point load test, schmidt hammer teat, absorption ratio best and slaking durability tests. The equations of relationships that can be used to estimate rock strength by using simple test methods in field and in laboratory are proposed.

  • The exterior of Korean traditional wooden buildings have been painted with Danchung of painting method using glue and pigments. However because of losing traditional techniques and materials through the period of colonization and industrialization, many problems are occurring today. Especially after several years from painting, occurrence of scalings and flakings in painting layer is a serious problem. To improve weathering resistance of painting layer caused by stress from the difference of swelling and shrinkage between painting layer and wood plate, was examined by weathering tests. The stress is due to the hydrophilic property of wood, mechanical properties(tensile property and stress relaxation) of painting layer, and priming methods by various binders such as glue, acrylic emulsion(Primal AC-3444), acrylic resin(Paraloid B-72). Because stress relaxation of acrylic emulsion of which glasf transition temperature is below room temperature$(7^{\circ}C)$ is high, painting layers with acrylic emulsion generate no scalings and flakings and are in the most durable state in all weathering tests. Priming method which starts from low concentration to high concentration, is more effective to improve durability than other priming methods.
