Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.
The distribution characteristics of some major environmental radionuclides ($^{40}K$, $^{228}Ac$, $^{226}Ra$, $^{222}Rn$) and U in rocks, soils and soil gas were studied at Geumjeong-Gu, Busan, Korea. The activities of radionuclides in granitic rocks are decreased in the odor of $^{40}K$>thorium decay series>uranium decay series. This reveals that Th was relatively more enriched in granitic rocks than U. The U content and activity of $^{226}Ra$ and $^{228}Ac$, however, don't reflect the fractionation sequence of granitic rocks in the study area. The activities of all these radionuclides and U content in soils are generally higher than in rocks, and their distribution in rocks, soils and soil gas show very low co-relationship. These facts indicate that the activities of radionuclides in soil and soil gas were greatly affected by leaching and adsorption properties of the radionuclides and their parents during weathering and pedogenetic process rather than their concentrations in parent rocks.
Aspen demand has increased recently in the Great Lakes region in the United States. Since aspen has moved into the region in late 1800's, its growing stock has increased so as to change forestry industry of the Lake States. Intensive timber harvesting and biomass removal may cause nutrient depletion, especially on nutrient-poor sites. Forest nutrients and nutrient cycling were investigated in aspen stands of 7-10, 27-33, and 41-42 year-old growing on sandy soils in Minnesota. Nutrients added to the aspen stands by atmospheric deposition and soil weathering were efficiently absorbed and stored in the tree biomass. Aboveground biomass increased from $24.4t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at young stands to $139.2t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at mature stands. Nutrients accumulated in the tree biomass showed same magnitude of difference. Nutrients added to the site through atmospheric deposition were in the order of Ca, N, K, Mg, and P. Annual litterfall was greater in older stands. However, the amount of nutrients returned by litterfall was not significantly different among stand ages due to the greater nutrient contents in the litterfall of young stands. Litter decomposition and nutrient release rates were greater at young stands than at older stands. Likewise, nutrient availability was higher in young aspen stands and became lower as the stands grew older. Nutrient leaching loss was minimal at all stand ages. Soil N mineralization was greater at young stands than at older stands. Nutrient cycling process was facilitated in young aspen stands with an increased level of available nutrients, Based on the estimations of nutrient balance and nutrient removal by harvesting, Ca was the most critical element which was likely to be depleted if aspen stands are intensively harvested with short rotations.
Twin stone pagodas of the ruins of Kamunsa temple at Kyongju city, Kyungsangbukdo
were believed to be built in 682 during the Unified Shilla Kingdom. The 13.4-m-high granodiolite pagodas with the base of 6.78 m x 4.4 m are the largest three-story stone pagoda in Korea. The western pagoda which was re-organized in 1959 is observed to be on the process of severe weathering. Also, some stone contacts are represented by the shape of sharp chevron, which is probably caused by the uneven loading due to the structural unbalance. For the structure-safety diagnosis of the western pagoda, it is necessary to understand its site characteristics and surrounding subsurface environment. Combined geophysical survey such as seismic and resistivity methods was carried out around the western pagoda. The range of 55∼350 Ωm is shown around the pagoda from the electrical resistivity mapping by the Wenner method. The higher resistivities occur the southwestern area, while the lower (<100 Ωm) values indicating the weaker subsurface appear to be on the northeastern area. This result coincides with the measurement of a leaning angle of the pagoda. Along 6 seismic lines, about 3-m-thick uppermost section around the pagoda shows the P-wave velocity of 200∼700 m/s from the refraction survey. Based on the integrated geophysical survey, the foundation
of the pagoda is estimated to be in the form of 11-m-side square down to the depth of 3 m.

Compared with the natural marble, the artificial marble has the advantages of excellent appearance, high degree of finish, even color, fine pressure and wear resistance, bear erosion and weathering, etc. It can be widely used in kitchen countertops, bath vanity tops, table tops, furniture, reception desks, etc. However, large amounts of artificial marble waste such as scraps or dust have been generated from sawing and polishing processes in artificial marble industry. Waste from artificial marble industry is increasing according to demand magnification of luxurious interior material. Artificial marble wastes can be recycled as aluminum oxide used as raw materials in electronic materials, ceramics production, etc., and methyl methacrylate(MMA) which become a raw material of artificial marble by pulverization, pyrolysis and distillation processes. The characteristics of artificial marble wastes was analyzed by using TGA/DSC and element analysis. Crude aluminum oxide was obtained from artificial marble waste by pulverization and thermal decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere. In this work, Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the pyrolysis process. The characteristics of crude aluminum oxide was evaluated by chromaticity analysis, element analysis, and surface area.

This study examined the efflorescence characteristics of a concrete sidewalk block manufactured using recycled stone powder sludge and photocatalytic generated by surface polishing during the sidewalk block manufacturing process. The study evaluated the characteristics of the sidewalk block in terms of its quality, based on the amount of stone powder sludge used, efflorescence, and further based on the mixing ratio and number of applications of the photocatalytic. The experimental results indicated that heavy metals such as lead, hexavalent chrome, cadmium, and mercury were not present in the concrete sidewalk block, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the recycled stone powder sludge. The optimum mixing ratio of used in the concrete sidewalk block (for satisfying KS standard values such as water absorption ratio and flexural strength) was found to be 20%. The concrete sidewalk block incorporating the stone powder sludge and photocatalytic exhibited a water absorption ratio of 5.4% and flexural strength of 5.2 MPa, thereby satisfying the quality standards. Additionally, when the photocatalytic was used, efflorescence did not occur even at the low temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$, and the by the sidewalk block was found to be 70% under normal conditions and 68% when subjected to an accelerated weathering test.

This research was carried out to estimate annual erosion and retreat rates by using datum-point and to identify the characteristics and causes of seasonal variations of sea-cliff slope in Pado-ri, Taean-gun. In the result, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were increased from spring to summer. The rates were increased rapidly between August and October, caused by the effects of extreme weather events such as severe rainstorms and typhoons, etc. Since then, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were decreased gradually, but the rates were increased again in winter due to the storm surge and mechanical weathering resulting from the repeated freezing and thawing actions of bed rocks. The factors that affect erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff include the number of days with antecedent participation and daily maximum wave height. In particular, it turned out that the erosion is accelerated by strong wave energy during storm surges and typhoons. The annual erosion and retreat rates of study area for the past two years(from May 2010 to May 2012) were approximately 44~60cm/yr in condition of differences in geomorphological and geological characteristics at each point. These erosion and retreat rates were found to be higher than results of previous researches. This is caused by coastal erosion forces strengthened by extreme weather events. The erosion and retreat process of sea-cliff in the study area is composed by denudation of onshore areas in addition to marine erosion(wave energy).
For effective preservation of the rocks, which bearing plant fossils at Gumkwangdong Formation, Pohang, the properties of rock and treatment of chemicals were examined in an artificial weathering test. The rocks are diatomaceous siliceous mudstone, which contain a small amount of smectite and has developed laminated layers. The rocks react with water, the d001 spacing of smectite was increased. On the one hand, the physical properties of the rock samples, such as surface hardness, improved after the application of ethyl silicate-based stone strengthener. On the other hand, the spacing of interlayer of swelling clay minerals decreased and spacing of laminae layer increased. When the ethyl silicate-based stone strengthener was applied after pretreatment with a swelling inhibitor, interlayer and spacing of laminae changes were similar to those when only the stone strengthener was treated. The effect of the swelling inhibitor was almost negligible. When the rocks that have been conserved with chemicals react with water, spacing of laminae has widened much, whereas when the rocks was in contact with moisture only, there was little change. In addition, if it is placed in the outdoor after conservation treatment, although it occurs slightly slower than the untreated rock, the separation of the lamination layer and the pulverization of the rock occur within a very short time. Consolidation is required to improve the physical properties of fossil rock, but when exposed to rain and undergoing freeze-thaw process, the effect is lost very quickly. Therefore, regardless of the chemical treatment, it is a priority to prevent direct rainfall contact with the rock.

Recently, due to climate change, the slope is increasing, and the risk of steep slope disasters such as the occurrence of slope collapse in the east coast and Busan region in 2019 and the Gokseong landslide in 2020 is increasing. Particularly, most national parks are made up of mountainous areas, and the risk of disasters on steep slopes is increasing. As the ground of the national park is aging and the weathering and jointing of the bedrock are accelerating due to climate change, the slope collapse and rockfall are increasing, and the annual number of visitors is increasing, it is necessary to manage steep slopes adjacent to multi-use facilities with many users. In this study, dangerous steep slopes that affect multi-use facilities in national parks were analyzed using GIS and verified through field surveys. As a process for extracting steep slopes adjacent to multi-use facilities in national parks, the slope was made in DEM and slopes of 34 degrees or higher were extracted. The difference between the maximum and minimum heights of the extracted slopes was used to confirm that the slopes met the standard for steep slopes, and the analysis of the slope direction was used to confirm whether it had an effect on the multi-use facilities. After that, precision aerial images and field photos were analyzed to finally identify risks at 4 sites, and field surveys were conducted. As a result of the field survey, all 4 sites were found to be steep slopes, 3 were graded D and 1 was graded C, so it was confirmed that management was required as a risk of collapse. All steep slopes extracted through GIS were found to be dangerous, so it is judged that the extraction of steep slopes through GIS would be appropriate.

This paper describes a dune field on shoreline of Young Gwang. To clarify geomorphic characteristics, made an analysis of grain size of the sand sediments samples and surface texture of quartz grains, and field survey. The following results were obtained : 1) Young Gwang sand dune is taking to pieces by human impact, and dose not move ahead the process of sand dune. 2) there was a turbulence of sand sediments outcrops saying to the cryoturbation that represents cold climatic environments, 3) Constituents of sand dune are mainly fine and very fine sand(2.5~4.5Φ) consisted by quartz and feldspar. Young Gwang sand grians have some analogy with different sites in west coast 4) In surface texture, roundness is thought to have been formed sub-angular, and some V cracks represented mechanical weathering environments. Especially, the dune environment has significant cultural and archaeological values arising from the occupation of human in the past. Those areas where occupation is known provide a valuable source of past records relating to human settlement.
