This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of forced temperature change cycles on physical and mechanical properties of sand and weathered granite soil. The effect of forced temperature change cylecs on the particle arrangement and the thermal conductivity was first investigated. A series of triaxial compression tests on the soils were also performed to look into the effect of temperature change cycles on the stress-strain-strength behavior. The results indicated that the forced temperature change cycle does not significantly affect the particle arrangement and thermal conductivity. It is shown however that the heating duration showed some effect on the deviatoric stress at failure while no significant effect due to the number of heating-cooling cycle was observed.

Currently about 3.2 millon tons of waste lime are accumulated and annually 100,000 tons are producted. This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of soil mixed with waste lime for reusing of roadbed embanking material. Waste lime used in this study is producted as a by-product in the manufacturing process of making $Na_2CO_3$ from local chemical factory in Incheon. In this study, the feasible reuse of waste lime mixed with granite weathered soil, clay, crushed rock was investigated through laboratory tests including specific gravity test, sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, atterberg limit test, compaction test, unconfined compressive test, CBR test, permeability test, shear test, and abrasion test. The mixing rate is granite weathered soil, clay, crushed rock 80 % respectively and waste lime 20 % by weight. From the test results, it is shown that the waste lime and soil mixtures satisfy the criteria as road embanking material specification.
This study analyzes the determination of slope failure model due to changes in ground condition followed by heavy rainfall. With a simulated rainfall system, the movement of a slope from the rainfall penetrating the unsaturated soil is investigated with respect to various conditions of pore-water pressure, earth pressure, and moisture content, considering rainfall duration and permeability. As a result of the experiment, under the persistent precipitation of 50mm/h, pore-water pressure of weathered granite soil started increasing from the upper position of the slope, and then the pressure increased in middle and bottom portion of it in timely manner. In case of the pore-water pressure of the standard soil, the pressure increased from the middle and bottom portion, and the cause of the different order is suspected to be the difference in permeability between the standard soil and the weathered granite soil. As an outcome, though the result may vary by each foundation, there exists a danger of slope failure not only when the cumulative rainfall is more than 120 mm but also when the saturation level amounts to 60~75%.
Since most of soil slopes are in an unsaturated state, it is necessary to consider the unsaturated characteristics of soil slopes, in order to obtain more reasonable results. Therefore in this study we supplemented a slope stability analysis program to consider them, based on the concept of limit equilibrium. We also applied an optimization technique to search for a failure surface. Besides, we carried out experiments to obtain the unsaturated soil properties required in the analysis with weathered granite soils. We formulated a nonlinear apparent cohesion relationship with the matrix suction to be able to apply the unsaturated shear strength characteristics to the stability analysis. In addition, we intended to obtain more accurate soil water characteristic curves(SWCC) by measuring the change in volume of the specimen in the SWCC tests. As a result, we could appropriately assess the change of the safety factor according to the rainfall intensity and duration, by considering the variation of suction, permeability, and shear strength caused by the infiltration of rainfall into slopes.

The main purpose of this paper is to describe the granitic regolith and frost creep phenomena in Daegwanryung area in order to demonstrate the relationship of the weathered materials and the surrounding surface, in order to point out that the characteristics of this particular complex of granitic regolith most closely resemble those of soil frost creep phenomena formed elsewhere under periglacial conditions. For this study, the writer has clarified their structure and its associated milieux, with a group of methods and techniques, field survey, micro-morphological analysis, granulometry of weathered materials etc. Such facies of granitic regolith in situ with silty heterometric materials and micas are prone to be deformed by cryo-suction as well as deep freezing. It was probably formed by cryogenic activity, or frost creep in the periglacial climate of a very cold and humid condition.
This paper presents the results of a scale model test to the effect of heat exchanger drainage method in retaining wall of weathered granite soil. Purpose to rise in the temperature of the heat wires inside the weathered granite soil is preventing the collapse of the retaining wall and drainage smoothly moved to the drainage layer. Especially using a spray gun to simulate the rainfall since the rainfall drainage work is important for the rainfall effect on soil, find the difference about displacement of the retaining wall, change of volume water content, drainage, earth pressure and change in the strain of the geosynthetic was effected to heat exchanger within the soil. The result from applying the heat exchanger method decreased the earth pressure and displacement of the wall and increased drainage of water.
The purpose of this research is to develop an amended clay liner by utilizing waste lime produced as a by-product in chemical industries. Waste lime contains various kinds of organics which affect the permeability, compactability, and unconfined compressive strengths of soil. The geotechnical engineering properties of waste were improved by adding other materials so that they might meet the EPA requirement of clay liner. Granite weathered soil, which is abundant in Korea and can be obtained easily in the field. was used as a primary additive to improve geotechnical engineering properties of waste lime. Various kinds of laboratory tests related to geotecnnical engineering properties, required to evaluate the design criteria for the clay liner in the solid waste landfill. were carried out by changing miRing ratio of waste lime with additive. According to the laboratory test results, in order to obtain the appropriate amended clay liner. the effective miffing ratio of waste lime in granite weathered soil was proved to be about 20~30%.

This paper presents a case study on the ground settlement and volume loss estimation for slurry pressure balanced shield TBM tunnelling in weathered zone of granite rock. Settlement at each stage of shield tunnelling was analyzed and the volume losses and settlement trough factors were estimated from observations. In addition, using the existing volume loss evaluation method in literature, volume losses were estimated considering ground properties and actual driving parameters. Most of ground settlement occurred during passage of shield skin passage and after backfill grouting, and the measured total volume loss and trough curves appeared to coincide with literature. Shield and tail loss obtained from field measurement were found to be around 90% and 60% of the predictions, where tail loss indicated larger deviation than shield loss.
When rocks are exposed to the near surface environment, they are broken down due to several factors such as physical and chemical weathering during the geologic time. The feldspar and mica, which are the main rock-forming minerals, are easily broken down relative to other minerals. In order to reproduce some weathered minerals similar to the ones exist in natural weathered granite, there was an experimental interaction between fresh minerals and acidic solution. In low pH condition, biotite initially dissolved and its surface structure broke down, whereas plagioclase dissolved and had a needle-shaped dissolved morphology with some precipitates composed of Al element. The minerals were deeply dissolved in a strong acid condition, showing the prominent dissolved structure. Some etch pits and dissolved textures developed on the natural mineral surfaces are similarly found in our experiment, suggesting the development of mineral dissolution and weathering texture by the influence of the mineral's intrinsic nature.

This study attempts to characterize Taebaek mountainous region as a natural unit, relating to morphoclimatic milieu and landform development patterns of the mountains of each lithologic type. In the case of granitic mountains of Nothern parts of this region, the slopes presents more or less steep or irregular profile because of abundant microforms of exposed bedrocks and blocks. The development of such landscape is essentially due to differential weathering, associated with difference of joint density. In the case of gneissic mountains, the slopes are well regularized straight steep ones, due not only to generalized superficial weathering but also to massmovement of weathered materials. In the Middle parts of this region, especially in Taegwallyong area, with frequent alternations both of freezing-thawing and of snow accumulation-melting, the roles played by cryo-nival processes proved to be important in weathering of granite as well as in morpho-pedogenesis. In this area, weathered mantle, developed by cryogenic activity under humid condition of nival environment, covered almost all over the slopes. Although Southern parts of this region consist of limestone, on the mountainous volume, distribution of Karst forms are limited while predominate none karst forms such as cockpit type peaks, V-shaped type valleys dissecting steep slopes covered with thin deposits in thickness containing rock debris.
